I had heard they saying "white reveals and black conceals" many times but I never understood it until you explained it. I also did not understand the luminosity mask until after watching this video. Thank you so much for explaining it in a way that made it easy to understand and now I know how to use it in the future. Thank you!

It seems that all these years I misunderstood what the masking actually show. Glad to have watched, thank you so much.

Thank you, I must admit that anything other than the basics in editing can throw me, so I like to play along with an edit whilst watching your videos. The photo that I chose to edit was primarily a lone tree against the sky. The luminosity mask picked out the individual branches of the tree much better than using the normal mask even with the refine option. Then by adjusting the levels and a little bit of painting over the long grass around the base I was able to create a perfect mask of the tree.

I have used this before, you have a good explanation of it. I do like the implementation of it in the last version of the software. Maybe I am just use to it.

Excellent, thanks. I have been struggling with images of Northern Shovelers against shiny water, and this is a great help - the N. Shoveler has a very dark head and neck juxtaposed with white body feathers and a luminosity mask with the appropriate levels may help.

Good video on luminosity masks. I just wrote to on1 about that something id love to have in this departementet is selective luminosity masks. Im not sure if you can do that at the moment in on1 but it would be very helpful. For example i have taken a shot and when i edit it I like to edit the subject and background using two different approaches with luminosity masks whilst using effects... or maybe the lighting is different from subject to background and needs to be edited slightly differently... i dunno its just a thought. If theres an quick and easy way besides brushing away what you dont need, let me know. 😊

Hmm yes it would be brush work most likely, or use their auto masking (Super Select) to isolate the subject and edit it, then copy/invert to edit the background. Thanks.
