Composer - Ian Anderson. DADGAD tuning. The original recording was done with a 12 string guitar so I've elected to use it here. I keep my 12 string tuned down a whole step so that's why I have the capo on the 4th rather than 2nd fret where it would be if the guitar were tuned to concert. There are at least 3 guitar parts on the original track, 2 acoustic and 1 electric. Here I'm trying to replicate the main guitar part. Cheers! Back with a followup tutorial shortly. Also, at the end of this video I play the ending once more just to demonstrate it more clearly.

Always happy to see you play. It's very enjoyable. You taught me Wondering Aloud and Skating Away so far. Nobody plays this stuff. You are a great resource for learning Tull. In fact the only one who is so detailed. Thank you for your great work.

Love the bass/baritone vocal harmony on this song. Thanks Doc, looking forward to the tutorial. On a previous upload, you hinted at acquiring a fretless bass. I would suggest, you look out for a regular fretted 5 string bass and then hire a luthier to remove the fret wires and fill the slots in with a decent filler. That way you'll be able to clearly see the frets because learning to play a fretless instrument at our ripe old age without reference lines is extremely difficult and just not fun. Yamaha produce nice looking 5 string bass guitars that wont break the bank.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah, I would have to have fret markers. I recently bought a Gretsch short scale bass that I'm having fun with. Yeah, that bass harmony thing is great. Kinda like the one in Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow that vibrates down there. Ian's vocal range was remarkable back in the day.

That performance is stellar ! I wonder how in the world you found out about the D 4 tuning (so called DADGAD with a capo up 2nd, normally, but your CGCFGC capo 4th is healthy for the thin G octave string). For many years I was thinking that Ians style is unique, but its not from heaven... very earthly in fact. I was always attracted by this celtic style in the tradition of players like Bert Jansch. Unlike Jimmy Page he never nicked a piece directly (think of "Black Mountain Side"!) This should also be playable in regular open E tuning E B E G# B E. I found out long ago but then decided to never perform that in public, since my own style is too similar and I'm known for exclusively performing on a 12 string (two thick G strings) in open E tuning here in Berlin. Best wishes, Conny

I also was drawn to Ian's Celtic style. Yeah, tuning down a 12 string is the way to go. Too much tension otherwise and unnecessarily hard to play. I like your G string setup. I did the same for many, many years. I think I'll go back to it.

Good job. Some interesting chords in there. And on a 12 string!

Thanks! He used a 12 string on a fair number of recordings but I've never seen video of him playing one live. I don't think it translates as well to live performance.

That’s what I have seen too, the many times I’ve seen him live. I imagine also keeping a 12string in tune, especially outdoors would be a beast even with a guitar tech in the wings. But I did enjoy the sound you got and it surprised me how accurate it is. Very well done.

Excellent! Do you think he also uses Mandolin on the original?

That's a good question. I listened to the track hard with headphones. There are so many parts going every which way, really makes it hard to decipher what is going on. I pan the balance back and forth so I can isolate instruments. In the left channel there is a higher pitched part that kind of sounds Mando-ish. Part of it is definitely a regular 6 string guitar but I think maybe I hear an octave Mando in there. He became very fond of them later as they play a huge role on SLOB.

That's a very nice 12 string. What make & model is it? I love them, and have 5 here!

Yeah, I bought this new about 1990. It's an early Larrivee and doesn't even have their logo on the headstock, just some beautiful inlay his wife did. It's hands down the easiest 12 string to play that I've ever had a go at. My good friend owns a music store nearby and he was the one that alerted me to it, as he had a relationship with Jean already. About '98 was traveling through Vancouver and got to stop in to meet Larrivee, have lunch, and a tour of the factory.

Thanks Doc. How long does it take you to change the strings and get it in tune? 😩🎸

It's a pain to change all those strings. For some reason I have a pretty good ear for tuning a guitar and it takes me just a few minutes to get this in good tune. It stays in tune really nicely too. I can't remember if I told you I bought this about 1990, new, paid $800, and it is a Larrivee.

@@snoozedoctor thanks for the info. You hadn’t told me the details before. Actually I might not have seen you play a 12 string before. If you have I would have seen it but I simply don’t remember 🎸
