One Hour Skirmish: The Blood Soaked Road to Cholet

The Republicans are on the march, from Cholet into the heartland of the Vendee, but men loyal to the kinds with crowns of gold and thorn refuse to submit. Using One-Hour Skirmish by John Lambshead, and a couple handfuls of 15mm miniature wargame figures, let's play out a little skirmish.
NOTE: A commenter below, (soft J) Justo Perez, helpfully provides one important clue as to why these games go so quickly - figures who move a second and third time on one card have to pay three and five actions respectively. That means taking three consecutive moves on one card costs a single figure NINE actions, rather than three. We'll get it right next time.

Very relevant commentary, I hadn't made the French connection to the modern day very well before your previous videos on this time period. Good stuff.

And beware the cancel cult’s “guillotine” too, done for all to see and fear. The 21st century’s equivalent of the “reign of terror”.

I was a bit meh on the idea of diceless game but the use of cards to generate the randomness in the game is brilliant along with how the turn can end immediately with a Joker draw. Great stuff! Thanks for demoing the game.

Interesting. Quick kills in mellee looks to make it very bloody and fast. I wonder what the later periods with better firearms would play like. (Mind you, halfway competant shooters might also make a difference - you're not wrong about having trouble hitting a barn!) Have been looking forward to you trying this set out. I have a copy myself but haven't got around to trying it yet (bought for donation to the local library and putting on games there).

Lol. If a bear hunter took “two moves” to reload, there wouldn’t have been any hunters left.

They seek him here, they seek him there, those Frenchies seek him everywhere... is he in heaven or is he from hell...? That damned elusive Pimpernel!

Awesome game! Man, those footmen move fast! The cards thing makes it look like two games going on at once, one with cards and one with miniatures. This should have been named Colline Cotelette de Porc, or Colline Hamburger. :)

In case you missed it: Commenter (soft J) Justo Perez informed me that they move way too fast. Figures who move a second and third time on one card have to pay three and five actions respectively. That means taking three consecutive moves on one card costs a single figure NINE actions, rather than three. Mega-whoops.

@@TheJoyofWargaming You should atone for this sin by making another video! Maybe WW2 or modern? :D

@ There will be more games of this coming. I have a couple of other campaigns to grind through first. The full blown napoleonics, British and French forces, will include cavalry to see how that changes the game as well. and of course this rule set will be perfect for the Further Adventures of the Dread Pirate, Red-handed Helen.

After watching picked up a copy. Had a thought that maybe put all jokers in one deck as the initiative and turn deck. Second deck for action resolution before the other team flips a new initiative card. Can shuffle action deck for each player or as cards run out.

Where is this scenario from? I’m trying to set up the table, but I don’t have a clear idea of what it should look like. Is it from Thomas?

Machine guns...fake news...LOL! Great play though. I was looking for a set of fast play rules for Vietnam and I think this might just do it. It will be interesting to see how the rules handle grenade launchers and machine guns. Thank you again for the video!

They also have some pretty solid rules for vehicles. They include armor facing, mounting/dismounting, and such. Certain weapons have armor piercing abilities as well, so you get situations where bazookas are great against tanks and mostly useless against personnel. Haven't had a chance to try them out yet, but well worth a read.

@@TheJoyofWargaming thank you for the info on the rules, I have ordered a copy and I am waiting on them to be delivered. I look forward to seeing you play more games with the rules and to also read them and get some mini's on the table. Thank you!

You made a significant error. A figure's 1st action is one point; 2nd action is three; and 3rd is five. This may explain why the scenario got wonky :)

@@TheJoyofWargaming ...and keep in mind the shooting itself is not an additional action point cost. Its consider part of the movement action but as you know, that terminates the figure's activation when it shoots. We'd love to see that same scenario again with the correction. Last comment. Please email me and I'll send you a video for my game scenario and some useful tips. My email address is magcon.justo@gmail.com

Also, get used to seeing it done wrong for a while. I've already uploaded two more battles using this rule set. I've mentioned your correction in the video description, with attribution (naturally). Thanks to my monthly advance, it'll be a few more wonky games before we get it right.
