The highest expressions of art make you confront the dichotomy of analytical knowledge and phenomenological experience. As someone who does not know anything about ‘what’ is being played but who, as everyone else, perceives the profound sound patterns he generates, one asks oneself if the enjoyment of the music would increase if one were a practitioner too. Every time I listen to this recording, and I must be well beyond a thousand now, I notice new things, as if it were an endless source of unfathomable complexity. It has appeared anew in the hundreds of places I have let it wash over me, from train rides between New Delhi and Kanpur to walking in valleys in Himachal, from climbing hills in Maharashtra to cycling along canals in Amsterdam, from bookshops in Paris to museums in Frankfurt. It is at once finite in duration and infinite in scope. I am grateful to be alive if only for these thirty minutes of wonder.

The tone of the tabla is amazing and different from what we see now I saw ustaad ji back in 1995 it was a similar tabla I guess this video is sometimes early 90s. It sounds great thank you for upload

What is the name of the rela which Zakir Sahib played after 24:20?

I think the base form is a Rau/Raon Rela that was originally conceived by Ustad Amir Hussain Khan. Ustad Zakir Hussain improvises with his own variations, and you can see other artists play this same rela but in a completely different way. Hope this helps!

It is one of the special khas Rela of Farukkabad gharana...actually it was not an Ust.Amir hussain composition..but was too old in farukkabad..which was generally popularized by Thirakwa saheb..ust.Amir hussain..ust.Masit khan..etc
