The one saving grace. Tbh he was genuinely just an overtuned boss. It felt like the devs kinda just went overboard with his damage, speed and that one combo I genuinely have no clue how you'd dodge it consistently. He also has some of the most egregious shitboxes in the game and despite being able call your mount, because of how fast he run and the charge being able to close the distance near instantly, makes Torrent practically useless in the fight because Gaius can dismount you in one attack.

@@greysx5512 Scadutree fragments carry over into NG+ and the only thing he's blocking is the chalice that gives you 5 of them. The room right before the fog gate is the place blocking your progression to the north east peninsula but he himself isn't blocking anything.

It's not that you can't "cheese him", it's the fact that 1) the devs didn't bug check something as simple as him getting stuck on very prominent collisions with one of the boss's most common attacks and 2) the charge attack makes Gaius entirely invulnerable so he's allowed to close the distance from you with zero risk to himself while also wielding a pretty insane hitbox that requires some fairly precise execution to avoid while ALSO taking out a sizeable chunk of your health regardless of scadutree level WHILE ALSO being able to use said move right after one of 7 different moves that can knock you flat on your ass and essentially just stunlock you to death from almost full HP lol

Personally, I wanted to stick with Torrent throughout this fight, but it just wasn’t doable for me. Couldn’t learn the timings while horseback in order to avoid having to spend like five whole seconds getting up after he died. I found it way easier on-foot honestly. Guess that’s exactly what makes these games so good, though. Plenty of different play-styles and options to choose from

I tried less rolling, more jumping and using shield, doing guard counter more often. The game became much easier and a lot more fun to play. Even running around for a better position does more than mindlessly rolling. I feel like the devs are intentionally punishing rolling players that mainly come from DS3 playerbase.

Okay I JUST defeated him on my 5th try and I have two words; DUELING SHIELDS. The ability to be able to attack and defend at the same time is amazing. You just need enough stamina to not get guard broken (even then it happened to me once or twice in the fight. I only have 50 endurance). The best parts is just the counterattacks AND being able to shield poke when I need to (at one point I managed to counter with a heavy hit and stagger Gaius and it was THE best feeling). My armor was whatever (nothing tanky), Physick was deflecting hardtear and opaline bubbletear. Talismans were dragoncrest greatshield, greatsheid, rotten winged sword, and claw talisman (although I didn't even do much jumping attacks that fight, so this could be changed to something else). I wasn't playing well either (trust me, I am not great at these games + I was also getting sick), and the other four attempts was me testing out my other builds to see what felt the nicest, so I wasn't even fully locked into the thrusting shield yet. Now that being said, even though I had a fairly easier time than many (lots of my friends also hated Gaius), I am still in agreement that some of his stuff is bs. That running charge that makes him completely invincible is ridiculous considering he already hits like hell and the move just screams "DON'T HIT ME WHILE I DO THIS". That along with his crazy lingering attack frames that sometimes look like it's already passed you and STILL hits you somehow is shoddy as hell. Definitely feel like they're gonna fine tune this a bit more. I wouldn't say it's one of fromsoft's worst (not trying the unrewarding wall strats and having a completely different playstyle of course skews things), but it's certainly not one of their best.

I think the problem with the charge is that it has a U-shaped hitbox due to the tusks, making the dodge window dependent on your position and the angle of the boss, therefore very inconsistent. My experience is that if you stand dead center towards the charge and dodge forward it becomes much simpler to avoid -- if From doesn't patch it soon, that is.

never really had this problem, and i dont think the hitbox is U-shaped, more like oval, also the beginning of the tusks dont actually have a hitbox, thats why so many salty souls veteran clowns are mad, they dodge too early thinking the tusks will hit them, but in truth u gotta dodge northeast/west abit later than assumed. these types of charges existed all the way back to the bb era with ebrietas and ludwig, aint nothing wrong with the hitbox, salty immature children that dont like precise timing and dodge direction would rather bitch about game design than their own shortcomings.

Yes they do want you to run all the way out into the field to fight him. And they do intend Torrent to be advantageous but you have to break lock to really move right in this kind of room. Couple of ways to make him easier... Treat him like a Dragon. Never stay in front of him ever, if he's facing you you should already be strafing. Treat him like a Dragon in the open where people do mount during the fights sometimes. Use Torrent, may take a bit to get used to the best times. I think it may be easier if you break lock and take advantage of the room they give you. His moveset changes depending where you are, which is obvious but it's more pronounced on Dragons and Commander Gaius.

Pro tips for anyone fighting him solo, or just general tips for improvement, that makes this fight way easier. 1. Be on light roll. If you're a mid-to-heavy boy/girl, change your gear or drink that equip load physick. 2. For the boar charge attack, roll at the last second. For this, you gonna have to face your fears and get that timing down. Like, you kinda want to roll when you're adjacent to the boar's face. 3. Don't summon Torrent, it makes the fight way harder. 4. When he does his long tekken combo, try to remember the pattern. Usually rolling away is a good option except for the last slam attack in the combo. You want to jump away for that. 5. His gravity psycho crusher aoe attack he does at the beginning of phase 2 - you want to wait last second and dodge, and immediately dodge again for the aoe follow-up. 6. You won't have a lot of generous damage windows like you do for Messmer because they will have two attacks that punish you from behind, so try attacking less, or simply use a fast but heavy hitting Ash of War like "Giant Hunt" or "Lion's Claw". 7. He's not an afterthought, treat him like a REAL boss fight. The mental battle is the most tilting thing about him because I can surmise what people will be thinking during this fight, which is "Who is this random boss? Agh, it's another easy mounted boss, again. Let's get this over with" followed by "why is this random guy on a pig giving me so much trouble?" And this is where the salt and the tilt begins and you start blaming the game and how "even this random encounter for this random guy is unalanced - wow, this dlc is unfair" mentality kicks in. Respect him because he's for real. Overall, I figured his fight all on my own in a couple tries and because of that, it wasn't that bad to me but I can see why people didn't have a lot of fun with him considering people don't experiment often.

I learnt after fighting Melania that going a light roll is actually really good.. the clothing is really optional and not a key part of defence, especially when you equip the appropriate talisman's. Give me that faster movement and extended roll any day.

Yeah the hog and therefor its hitbox is crazy big, but assuming its intentional...just change your approach if its getting you killed. The options are there. Too many people think medium roll spam is THE way to play ER no matter what.

The real problem is that they balance bosses around the use of summons (that's why you tend to see pretty much every boss with AoE attacks, or splash damage), also some bosses force you to change builds

If your talking about Gaius, he is a pain with his tracking and uninterrupted offense, but he's really not that bad compared to some others. If anything, remember that a safe heal is one done after dodging a sequence of attacks, basically healing instead of inflicting damage. Funny thing I struggled like hell on my second play through on Gaius with sword of darkness, switched to the heavy axe from the death thunder knight and it went without a hitch.

For anyone struggling with the 8 or so hit string just look out for the big wind up he does, dodge roll away once and then just sprint away from him until he does the last hit and dodge that by rolling toward. I did this with medium roll and was happy any time I saw him start that move because I knew I was about to get free damage on him. Fight took me about 4 tries no summons, sprinting is your friend. Also I had to put my daggers away for this one and instead used my Poison Nightrider Flail with The Poison Flower Blooms Twice

If Max had just rolled through Gaius and engaged him in the more open area of the arena rather than trying to cheese him against the wall or fight him directly in the door (much easier to get stuck yourself or have the camera break), I think he would have had a much easier time. His damage was consistently solid, and if he had just tried to learn the boss strings and safer areas (boss's side, not in front/behind), he would have beaten him much faster and had a much better time with it. Watching it back, a lot of his complaints about the boss's hitbox are just him getting hit with the boar tusks or not rolling through the entire attack string. He mostly figures it out by his victory, anyway.

The spin attack was the last attack I figured out. If your far away, dodge into him and immediately dodge into him again where he lands. If you're already close you can just wait for the 2nd part and dodge into him.

I honestly liked fighting this guy; one of the better fights in the DLC, imo. The best strategy to use is the exact same one you use with the Putrescent Knight: ALWAYS stay close to him. His most annoying moves are almost only used when there's distance between you two. The charge is dodged by dodging straight ahead into it; it's tight, but he should pass right by you if you do this. You always wanna be on his right (your left) to goad him into doing the combo with him and his mount taking turns swinging (the one where his mount looks up and to your left for a second), and the direction you dodge matters: dodge left, right, left, left to bypass both his and his mount's attacks. If you stay on him, you can manipulate him to do this a lot (it's easily his most punishable attack), and it has enough end lag for you to do either a decently charged heavy or a heavy jump attack for a stagger after a few rounds. It's fairly rhythmic once you get the hang of it, very similar to Putrescent and Midra. The direction you dodge actually matters in this fight, and you wanna bait and punish instead of having an aggro playstyle here. Certain builds are probably gonna be better than others, and I was around Scadutree level 14-ish when I fought him, so definitely explore more if he's two-shotting you or if you're not doing enough damage!!

And I agree you have to bait especially with slower weapons otherwise he can charge you during endlag. He doesn’t have a ton of moves especially if you stay close like you said.

You can dodge roll Giaus's charge. Run and roll towards him and to the left. Basically the 9 or 10 o clock position on the stick. Its a fun fight going toe to toe. I couldn't hack it using the mount. Felt like it was just a waste of time.

​@@mingQWERTYif Max's gameplay is to be considered, the jankiest part of Gaius is his charge, in how it's coded, even the rider+boar 3 part combo had a right way to dodge both attacks (towards each swing and then delaying the dodge for the final upward tusk strike, while not being baited by the trashing wind up)

I feel crazy because gaius never felt overly difficult to me. Hard yes and took me a few tries, but not absurdly difficult. He has tells, safe zones and really easy baits you can punish. The trick really is to just fight him on foot, fighting him on torrent just does not work. Which sucks because his fight really does seem like they intended it to be a mounted fight but doing it on torrent just feels like a handycap with how easy he knocks out torrent (I still don’t know how to avoid the double gravity circle attack he does at a distance). My tactics: keep him near the fog wall so you can control his movements better (do NOT box yourself into a corner though). Try to stay close so he doesn’t spam his ranged BS. Keep straffing to get behind him, then bait out the boar’s back kick before punishing it. He will very consistently do that back kick if you are squarely behind him, so it’s easy to bait out. If he does the big spinning dive, dodge inwards and stay close to him, near him is safe from the AOE effect and you should be able get in at least one hit while there.

Nobody told Max that he can just power stance both the fire and frost weapons and still do what he was doing instead of switching out one or the other. The fire damage does not cancel out the frost build-up just the frostbite.

I feel like I'm in the minority saying that Commander Gaius is a good boss fight. Then again I fought him 5 times and got his patterns down. Plus I love the fact that he's a general riding on a boar with gravity magic to boot. Also is it me or a lot of people who stream Elden Ring never really use a shield. Or is it just me. I didn't mind Gaius, switched to full tank mode, shield + pickaxe, jump attacked and stunned him to oblivion. Now, granted it wasn't NG+ for me, but I'd do the same in my NG+ playthrough, he's pretty much an endurance boss / attrition boss. You must stagger /stun him as much as you can and block his attacks, otherwise no amount of face-tanking damage mitigation will help you (similar to the last boss actually, tank mode as well and you're relatively fine).

Commander gaius charge attack is bs, in the 2nd phase he can also cancel attacks directly into the charge attack. The gravity ball is the most annoying thing in any fight in the game. That backwards horse kick will also sometimes track you, so even if you strafe or roll, it will still hit you.

I've noticed bosses in this DLC can just cancel the recovery of attacks and go directly into another to stop you from healing at times. It happened to me with the Dancing Lion where I dodged the last attack of a string and went to heal, but then he instantly did a grab attack afterwards. Same thing with a spoiler boss with the letter B. It borders on unfair.

I genuinely feel like I’m the only person in the entire world who actually enjoyed Commander Gaius’ fight, and it’s probably because of how I fought him. I when into the fight using the backhand blades with blind spot, which helps avoid the charge tackle he likes to do, and even then said charge tackle can be dodged out of.

I think one of the biggest things people ran issues with this boss is his damage. Most people say his damage is bullshit, but I think it’s just I collected more Scudru fragments by the time I found this guy, hell, fought him before Messmer

dodge the charge northeast a tad later than you think, the tip of the tusks dont actually have a hitbox, and thats why so many salty ppl are getting hit even though they dodged, most ppl are dodging slightly earlier than they should and they get clipped. theres objectively nothing wrong with the hitbox, and it objectively fair, it just demands price timing and roll direction. "also why does he insist on fighting him right up against that wall lol?" pretty much why disregard most "critique" about the hippo boss too, some ppl just fuck up the fight themselves then blame the boss lol.

Gaius has to be in the top five worst bosses they ever made. Charge with dumb hit boxes, literally get hit behind him off screen. Plus he's sekiro speed while you're playing at dark souls 2 animation speed before you upgrade adaptability. Just a shit boss all the way around.

I didn't have as hard a time with this boss as other people, was doing great katana savage lion claw, biggest thing is i kept getting clipped by the end of his charges when i rolled. Otherwise felt the patterns werent too bad

The Gaius boss fight was literally made for fighting with Torrent. They gave you a big field. Many of Gaius' moves cannot be avoided or are extremely difficult to avoid without zooming around on Torrent. Max instantly gave up on the idea of using Torrent because his horse got one-shotted but of course it did, he hadn't leveled him up. Gaius can be a lot more entertaining fighting the intended way. Treat him like a dragon boss or a star beast. Ride around, get a few hits. When there's a brief window, get on the ground and wail on him but immediately get back on and dash away dash away dash away. Or just go full sword/shield tank mode if you insist on staying on the ground with stupid high poise and stamina.

Torrent isn't invincible. he will go down in one or two shots. The boss is overly aggressive. You can't even summon before the boss rams you into the wall and starts slapping you around as your walking in.

When he does his charge attack you have two options : Either dodge at the very end on his right Or use torrent as soon as possible and run with him ,then proceed to go back on the ground . Always have to be on his side when you fight him ,if you are too far ,Gaius will likely use more of his charge attack When he goes on 2nd phase ,he will do his super Gravity Environnemental attack , what i do is using torrent again and go far away. Then wait for him to come

This boss took me the second longest besides the end boss, and I went from thinking he was completely bullshit and broken to actually finding the fight really fun. All of his attacks are actually pretty reasonable to dodge and you have plenty of time to punish most of his stuff. The only real issue is the charge but I found I could dodge it 9/10 times by rolling straight into him.

For people having trouble with this boss: hugging the wall is a sub-optimal strategy. Better to go into the center of the field so you don't get stun-locked and have camera issues.

I don’t think Gaius is the hardest boss in Elden Ring (that’d still be the final boss of the DLC) but he is definitely the worst. Literally broken. I couldn’t even really beat him. After about 50 tries, he killed me with one hit left to go, and my mimic tear just managed to land the final hit on him before the death screen ended. Pure luck.

How to recover health vs Gaius.... Use torrent to run away. Heal. There are some attacks that completely whiff on you while you both are side by side. After a few hits in on horseback, jump off and get thru the combos.
