We'll truly see the culmination of what one piece is once we see gear 5 in the live action adaptation.

It should only take at most one more season to see it the way Oda *really* intended. 🤞🤞

super saiyan>gear 5

Honestly I think the comparison is a much larger conversation then most people on either side even fully realize. A lot of modern Anime fans haven't seen Dragon Ball and don't know just how impactful Super Saiyan actually is. Both transformation that developed elements that where set up in the main characters from near the beginning. Both simple and clean, but striking designs. And even though the mechanics of Gear 5 are obviously much more dynamic and stronger, one can't discount how much mileage was gotten out of Super Saiyan and its various follow up forms. That is to say. Super Bobobo >>> All other media.

It only took retcon and plothole to ruin Luffy’s df it being a MYTHICAL SUN GOD! Everything handed to this boy its sad. Adult Gon > Super Saiyan > Gear 5 Ashpull
@WritingCorner Жыл бұрын
Ranking Adult Gon higher is strange since it had a lot less foreshadowing/set up.

@@WritingCorner Gon just didn't got his power out of nowhere and actually sacrificed his entire potential everything.. his body, mind and in turn, his ability to use nen for greater power.
@WritingCorner Жыл бұрын
Yes. As the Nen system works, more sacrifice more power. But it still didn't have any foreshadowing or build up. Sure, Super Saiyan was a retcon and rushed into the story only a few chapters before happening. But it was at least set up before occurring. And you won't get any debate from me on the power of the actual scene/episode Gon-San was revealed in. To me it was the best piece of HxH. In cases of both power ups, they also have the same exact criticisms that can be made against Gear 5. The only difference is Gear 5 did have more build up. Instead of just making the main character hit harder it gave them a diverse range of new abilities. Plot wise and thematically it is the strongest of the power ups. You can like other power ups more, that's fine. But the reasons given weren't logical or unique to Gear 5.

@@WritingCorner Simply put, Togashi does not need foreshadowing or retconning one’s power just to fit the narrative like Oda even tho it doesn’t make any sense since it creates massive plotholes and conveniences (Zoan type Human-Human fruit mythical model Sun God Nika) In HxH idea that happened before is only needed - Vow/Condition/Post Mortem Nen. Take Kurapika’s vow on chain jail, he dies if he uses it on anyone but a spider, but that power is omnipotent against a troupe member, they get hit, its overs for them. But a vow that you'll die if X happens is less powerful than giving your life or betting it (and dying) on something. Its just the most powerful form of condition a person can place on something like nen. Nen responds to the users intent, so malicious intent directed at someone could form a curse, or in Kurapika’s case applying a curse enough to outright kill a non-nen user. But intent can be directed inwards (Hisoka) or a desire to protect another (Pitou). Some can't just add a Limitation or a Vow to an ability out of nowhere without those natural feelings. Sometimes its intentional, often its not, and the result can be unpredictable. Hisoka never assumed his love for his nen ability would manifest as a power boost, he just wanted to save his own life, it was a gamble. Pitou never intended to use her power that way, she was unconscious or basically dead, but her desire was strong and her nen power suited a type of automatic activation post mortem. Specifics of developing a Nen ability is complex in the story, it’s clear that Vows and Limitations are inherent part of each ability that are added to them as they are created. Also, most hunters dislike adding Limitations to abilities. The enhancement of power they provide is inconsistent and the conditions need to be very severe for the benefit to be significant. Again Kurapika is able to use as severe Vows as he does because hunting the Phantom Troupe is literally his life's work (revenge). He's willing to sacrifice a lot of the general power of his abilities to make them really powerful in specific situations. Gear 5 is not unique or special in the matter because the execution is a mess besides one of its examples like dying and came back alive to be OP that thing already happened on other show such as YYH Yusuke’s Mazoku transformation. In the beginning of the show it foreshadows him as a different than any other human being and finally seeing his silhouette and being half human half demon, also his reflection spirit beast Puu during Dark Tournament arc (Luffy’s silhouette in Skypiea arc right? same mentioning some minuscule details in other arcs about Sun this and that) Another example is Goku’s super saiyan 1 obviously being foreshadowed during Frieza arc (same thing with Sun God Nika in Wano arc) I could go on more and more, dig deeper to every old Shonen MC’s out there but its way too long so long story short Gear 5 Luffy is a poor execution rather it being original. Oda messed it up by retconning Luffy’s Gum-Gum fruit Paramecia type, you don’t do that because that makes Gorosei look more like dum dum little children mentality. You can excuse Shanks or Garp anyday but it does not change the fact that it is a retcon infested mess of a transformation that affects the story.

That was a well-articulated reply. And as I do think we both know the context we’ve gone over thus far, many wouldn’t. I’m still not a hundred percent sure on calling anything a plot-hole at this point. (Unless you have another piece of information). And obviously, many people have gone back-and-forth on the Gorosei. That on one hand you have 800 years of no one awakening the devil fruit and literal destiny working against them. But on the other Luffy after the war at least should be just about near the top of the priority list. (Though again back-and-forths can be had on the exact nuances of the actions that should or should not have been taken by them). I do agree that the fruit being Zoan is a retcon. I mean, we didn’t even have Fruit Classifications until hundreds of chapters later, so in a way those are also a retcon. Albeit a seamless retcon. Whereas other retcons, such as Gear 5 (or various examples from other series already brought up), brush up against the reader more directly. And yes technically nothing kept the Gum-Gum no Mi from being another type of fruit, the story still firmly placed it in its original category. It’s a twist. And with all twists the answer then comes down to if what was given outweighs what was taken away. A lot of people seem to be heated up about Gear 5. For all types of reasons. To me Gear 5 is so obviously a further evolution of the genre and will undoubtably have countless series following in its footsteps. Which seems unavoidable. Since Dragon Ball accomplished that. With far more problems that could be levied against Super Saiyan. But both had those core emotional beats and design principles between them. That it is very easy to view Gear 5 as being completely synonymous with One Piece. That one can of course find faults with it. But regardless of those faults it still is an incredibly impressive thing. People can enjoy things in a lot of different ways. Many people don’t like Gear 5 because it’s goofy and not *mondo-cool*. Thus far it seems you personally don’t like it because it is convenient and clearly shows the hand of the author putting things in place, instead of it more naturally happening. And even some people don’t like it because of simple tribalism. But I believe the people that do like it are most likely the one’s that enjoy One Piece in a more similar way to how Oda enjoys it.
