I don't see how anyone could think he is not a hero after watching the conclusion of the SeaKing fight. He took on all the hatred of everyone to hold up the other heroes that sacrificed so much to buy time for his arrival. That was a perfect metaphor for jumping on the grenade by an invincible character.

​@@goldman77700 Don't know if I agree entirely. What Saitama did was undeniably noble, but Mumen Rider put a lot more on the line. Two very different forms of self-sacrifice, don't know if they can be compared. I will grant you that Mumen Rider was more eager to sacrifice his life than Saitama was to sacrifice his reputation, but since the value of a sacrifice depends on its value to the person making it, I can't exactly go and call Saitama selfish for only sacrificing something that almost anyone else would consider trivial.

@@goldman77700 I have to disagree, Mumen Rider was not "eager" to sacrifice himself. He's just a guy doing the right thing, helping any way he can. He dose whatever he can to help just as eagerly. In the Deep Sea King it was sacrificing himself to buy time for the more powerful heroes to arrive, knowing they would not arrive in time to save him, just hoping they would arrive in time to save others. In the finale he just as eagerly helps rescue people in the destruction zone knowing he will do more good doing that than he would have had he "heroically sacrificed" himself trying to fight. He is not " trying to be a hero" so much as he is just doing the right thing in any given situation, that specifically is WHY he is more of a hero than even Saitama.

The fight with Boros was something you missed. Saitama realized that Boros is just like him, a man tortured by strength and dissatisfaction, Saitama knows his pain, and drags out the fight for him, allowing Boros the fight saitama could never have. in the end Boros informs saitama that he knew all along Saitama was holding back, and that's when he feels hit, Boros sees that Saitama is struggling like him and says "you were too strong". Saitama is such a unique character, I dare say he is more interesting than Goku. This may not be relevant to Saitama being a hero but damn, does that hit.

@@deivytrajan i think the problem there is that he can't accurate gauge how much of a threat any given monster is. they are all so far below him that a dragon will look like a wolf level threat. as a result, he never takes the threat as serious as he should, but i still don't think he's ever let any that he knew to be monsters walk away. mostly because they end up attacking saitama when he tells them to just go home.

I think he is heroic because he does virtuous things that don't benefit him in any way. For example, he keeps King's secret, doesn't reject him but does quietly lecture him on morals. He gives up on self-aggrandisement (unlike the other heroes) and doesn't care much about the ranking system, and tries to encourage others to do the same. Given a choice between saving an innocent, and doing something that will give him money or fame, he consistently protects the innocent. He's not a saint - and he is not as heroic as the guy who rides the bike - but he consistently sacrifices money, fame, adulation, etc to do the right thing. And he is quietly, almost accidentally, reforming people around him who have strayed from heroism. I have seen a manga where he talked someone out of suicide. He did it in a very practical and clear-headed way, showing wisdom that he can't seem to apply to himself. A lot of the 'heroes' would have shrugged it off as beneath them, or even encouraged the man to die as being contemptible for their weakness. I don't know if that is in the anime, but I thought it was a good summary of that character - doing things that will never help himself, because they are good, and for no other reason. And only the audience knows, or perhaps a few in his close circle know, about all the selfless things he does.

There's also a chapter in the manga when he killed a monster and faked his identify as a cop in front of the crowd to show that it was the police station that was victorious and not the heroes who were becoming overrated. He did this to save the Police Officers' dignity. He could've revealed his identify as a hero in front of the crowd but he didn't. Small instances like this PROVE that he does heroic deeds also because they are the right thing to do and not just because he's looking for thrill all the time.

I despise the Mumen rider character. In a world where you can become ultra strong just by training he is not improving himself one bit, just helps everyday people out with small things. If that was what he wanted to do with his life, fine, but then don't try to pick a fight with monstrous opponents if you are a scrubby little squirt. Saitama is one of the noblest heroes in the world. He doesn't even care if people don't know what he's done for them or even if they don't appreciate him and call him a fraud. He doesn't care as long as he saves them. He is probably one of the most unselfish person in the world. He doesn't care about his reputation or anything. Even in season 2, he tells Fubuki that heroes aren't made to be ranked or a competition and its to do good and that she is not worthy of being called a hero. Now this is a true hero.

I maybe reaching really far here but ive always thought that Saitama intentionally stood back and watched the fight between mumen rider and Deep Sea King out of respect. Obviously Saitama couldve intervened before Deep Sea King knocked Mumen out because hes right there to catch him. But i feel Saitama didnt want to crash a powerful moment between the two that Saitama himself has been through when he had hair. Even just the scene where Saitama is piggy backing on Mumen riders bike is amazing and hilarious considering Saitama could practically instant transmission to the chaos but he chooses to ride on a pedal bike with a guy he sees is extremely passionate about being a hero and that maybe the reason he let the Mumen Rider fight vs Deep Sea king playout. There is also a depressive undertone in OPM which shows up a few times in the story. And i think that is the author showing how males in Japan are struggling with themselves internally which is a huge problem plaguing Japan at the moment. There is more to this story than one punching monsters...

Even though Saitama can't sacrifice his physical wellbeing - he certainly sacrifices his good name. What's worse: Sacrificing yourself to save the world with your name going down in history, or saving the world and nobody appreciating you at all? Saitama could die and save the world, however I doubt many people would acknowledge his heroism. What does one gain from being a hero that nobody appreciates? That seems like altruism to me - well as altruistic as one can be without feeling some form of self gratification. Who knows, maybe Saitama is incapable of feeling pride (he resonates humility) - therefore without receiving reward from self or others he is the ultimate in altruism.

I read it every month or so, that way I have more content to read. 1 of my favorite chapters was when Tatsumaki was bored. She was funny & cute. Of course she's always cute, but still. Read that when I was in the hospital. Manga helps when you're close to possibly dying like I was (severe pneumonia, bad sepsis, severe anemia so bad I had to be whisked away to the hospital ASAP & more). I got so sick of laying there for days, so I was going to leave early but they said if I left I was very likely going to die. So after 3 days of laying there i pulled out my tablet & read manga to pass the time. Back in the 80s & 90s when i was younger, no cell phones meant you had nothing to do at the hospital but read boring magazines & watch whatever junk channels they had, which didn't help since I am nearsighted so much that I'm legally blind. I need to have a TV within a 2 feet of me in order to see what's going on, 1 foot if I must read. But of course in hospitals they're usually up in a corner on the other side of the room & tiny too.

What sticks out to me about Saitama's heroism is that, with his power, he could do anything and no one could stop him. No one could even hope to oppose him meaningfully. He is literally beyond any form of rules, beyond law enforcement or some band of plucky heroes to stop. If he wanted to, he can do whatever he chooses to without real consequences. He knows that, we know that, we know he knows that. But we see him living a modest life and doing the right thing, admiring the efforts (Even when ineffective) of others to do the right thing. Very few people, if they are honest with themselves, would be capable of taking such a saintly path of doing good and only good with that kind of power. In an ironic sense, Saitama is the same heroism Superman embodies, just with a more down to earth attitude about it. Superman is always trying to be 'the big blue boyscout' but Saitama doesn't put on such a mantle. He is always himself without presentation or social face without care for how that makes him look. He's aware of it, it hurts him sometimes, but he instantly puts the good of others before his own desires without hesitation. You want to see someone's true character? Give them power. See how they treat their lessers. Then you will know. Everyone is Saitama's lesser in power, and we see how he acts.

I can see why people would see Saitama as not heroic and Id give the same answer, just look at what he did when he wasn't as powerful he has heroic characteristics in him and despite having no fun fighting he still helps people, wouldn't a self centered depressed individual with immense power just abandon all that. What amazed me about One Punch man initially is the fact that Saitama is an opposite of a stereotypical protagonist we get in most shounen or superhero manga. Unlike the majority of protagonists, he is the most regular person, one of the most insignificant people to others around him (until he fights that is), he doesnt seek power (in fact he wants a downgrade to his abilities), even his special moves are just regular punches or movements, he doesn't say generic protagonist lines while fighting (his only serious talks are about regular things in life and facing the truth of it all, reminds me of Arataka from Mob when he speaks his truth), he is the most avarage nice guy that you can find. He stands in contrast to spectacular looking heroes and villains, their transformations, moves, power-ups and even skill names. That is why he is an amazingly unique hero, that could only be made by ONE. And because of this huge contrast there is tons of humor, i mean even cities have A,B,C... names, its like the author said fk it, who gives a damn what they are called, lets just name them whatever and he is not wrong =D

While in most situations that is correct I believe that what makes you a hero is just the fact that you're standing up for what is right regardless of how many other people stand along side you. Sure, Saitama might not be able to sacrifice his physical body for the sake of others, but that doesn't mean he doesn't sacrifice his own well-being for the sake of others. And that is my reason for believing Saitama is a hero. Saitama could've taken the credit for defeating the Deep Sea King. He would've been hailed a, "Real hero" by the masses for saving so many lives. But because of a certain jerkwad who talked down the sacrifices of the other heroes, he didn't. With the people's faith in heroes shaken, Saitama knew he had to preserve the heroic mythos for the sake of the public. They need to believe that the Heroes of the Hero Association can protect them no matter what. And so he made the personal self-sacrifice of giving up his reputation and the glory he would have received for the greater good. And if that doesn't make for a hero, I don't know what does.

Just write. Don't worry about making it good, don't worry whether or not people will like it, just write. Experience is life's greatest teacher, as well as failure. Don't be afraid of either. Just write a story you find interesting, and then try to write another one. Do this enough and eventually, you'll understand how to make good stories and compelling characters. Trust me, I'm working on the first draft of my first feature screenplay and it's horrible, but I gotta finish it if I want to get better.

Great characters have three things in common: - Interesting challenges to overcome. - Believable and genuine flaws. - Strong motivations. What would be more interesting, dude? Watching Superman save a life, or watching the Joker save a life? Could you come up with a good reason why the Joker decided to do so? I'm not an expert. I have written a couple garbage stories, but I always start with an interesting story before throwing characters in the pit. Take my advice with a grain of salt.

So would it be logical to say that all authors write from a point of dramatic irony? Also. That thing you said about the characters being the ones that shape the scenes and not the other way around. I completely agree. It also makes me think. Mayhaps, when writing a story, it is preferable to make the characters first, then the scenes.

It goes without saying that you need to know what story you want to write first, though, and that will inform the characters you write and thus how to direct every scene. Given two identical characters, everything can be completely different given a different setting and other characters and story beats. And if you're trying to tell a story of heroism, it does no good to write a main character with no heroism in them, nor the capacity to become a hero as the story progresses. If you're writing horror, you can't have a confident main character who can beat all odds and make everything safe, unless you're going for something more psychological and want to undo it all at the last second (but that would give it a twisty thriller feel, not a horror feel). I think it's better to think of it as a multi interacting system. If the characters aren't driving the scenes you want to create, you can change the characters or let them dictate the narrative. Which one is better is circumstantial. Either way, the characters just need to fit the narrative, but you can do it from the top-down or bottom-up.

Wouldn't say all authors write from dramatic irony. any time you face a character that ends up as more of a "vessel" or self-insert you are immediately faced with that lack of personal depth or motive to define such a condition. It's more of the characters doing things simply because they are there at that point. Or, when you have a reasonably defined character, but choose to act against their design for the sake of the narrative.

Usually, especially so in anime, the hero’s journey involves becoming stronger than before to the point that it may seem to be the essence of becoming a hero. But that’s not what makes a hero. This is a theme that comes in fiction many many many times, in Naruto or My Hero Academia for instance... but One Punch Man manages to highlight the true meaning of being a hero better than any other work out there by getting rid entirely of the concept of the protagonist pushing through his physical limits.

A hero doesn't need the appreciation of a crowd, he only wants the appreciation of the individual, in this occation Mumin Rider,. You rarely see saitama smile when he see's someone yet when he saw mumin rider again after being promoted (which is something he only cared about to avoid reporting he weekly activities) he smiled for realizing who he was and then kept that true smile when mumin told him that the Thank You later he received was his. That food/drink mumin treated saitama as a thank you was for him better than the entire cheering of a city

Here's the thing people don't realize about saitama: He's a liar. He can go on and on about how he's a hero for fun, but the fact is that he risked his life to save a kid he didn't even know. Sure he wants a thrill, but he never tries to put peoples lives at risk and he became a hero to save people. He even helps multiple people along the way, like taking genos under his wing, giving boros the fight of his life, becoming friends with king and allowing sweet mask to open up. He was always heroic, but he just doesn't see it.

that's an idiot , not a hero. Heroic is what you do , not what you're risking to do that thing. Saving a person from a criminal as example is heroic no matter who does it and how. andrea piro sometimes a hero can be made from an idiot willing to risk their life to do a good thing, and in most cases this is more of a action of impulse instead of a thought-out action... such as deku from mha, who’s quirk could literally tear him apart, but still tries to help in his own way... Also deku does this in MHA and is constantly criticised for it, which is valid as a person who breaks themselves to save 1 person is not very useful.... And later in the anime he does learn to be more sustainable as a hero, and he becomes more useful... Overall, I somewhat agree and disagree with your statement, as a reckless person who constantly risks their life can be seen as not being a hero, but a person who acts on impulse on trying to do a good thing even when they are at risk is someone I would consider a potential hero, although they would have to become a proper one by learning how to not take unrequited risks when there is often another option.

Saitama is absolutely a hero. He might not be the hero you picture (which is 100% what ONE was going for when he wrote the webcomic), but Saitama doesn't care about that, he does what he does because he wants to, not out of some obligation or desire. Which while some people don't think that is very heroic, your video still outlines why Saitama is indeed a hero. It's just on his terms, not someone else's.
