I had learned about t-tests in undergrad, but that was so long ago that I've practically forgotten. This was a much needed refresher. The examples were easy to follow and straightforward. I appreciate that Dr. Grande offers the analyses demos in both SPSS and Excel.

I did use SPSS in my undergrad but I thought that this video did a really nice job of explaining it again to reiterate it to me. This stuff can be a bit difficult for me sometimes, so it is nice to be able to see this video and go over the information with no pressure of trying to do the work in class right away, as it was in undergrad. By watching this video, I feel more comfortable and confident with this information.

This was a great example of one-sample and independent samples T-test. It is fairly straight forward and I can see how simple it is to plug in the information in the analysis tool. The charted information is very easy to read and the output is a common format.

I had previously heard of t-tests and learned about them in class, but was unaware of the differing types of t-tests that could be used. This video was extremely helpful in learning when to utilize each form of a t-test. In addition, it was interesting to learn that one-sample t-tests will not calculate differences between groups but rather for the difference between a dependent variable and specified mean. In contrast, an independent-samples t-test can distinguish a difference between groups. These concepts were completely unfamiliar prior to this video.
@thecorgisquad98619 жыл бұрын
Jacklin Skibicki I was also grateful that he specified which different T-tests you would use in varying scenarios, whether you were comparing two different groups via an independent-samples T-test or a one-sample T-test for difference of dependent variable and mean like you mentioned.

Independent-samples T tests are useful to demonstrate whether there are any differences that exist between two variables, treatments, and so on. @michellerobinson9689 жыл бұрын
The difference in the one sample t-test and the independence t-test was interesting to know. Having to run the stat for each group (control & depression level) seems lengthy versus running stats for independent t-test which can distinguish between groups.
@jhoward11299 жыл бұрын
I still maintain that SPSS is easier to use than Excel. It is helpful to know that Excel can do so much since I already have it, but I wish SPSS was more readily available and less expensive. I appreciated Dr. Grande breaking down the results because it makes it less complex when we have a good explanation. Things in research can get so complicated, so I appreciate it when the ideas can be broken down into simpler terms. I also like that he gave the example of depression and anxiety because it gives it a more real life application that I van understand.
@rachelfoster54639 жыл бұрын
Jessie Howard I agree! These videos can be really complicated, and I greatly appreciate it when Dr. Grande breaks down the different terms and concepts. I, also, agree that real life examples always help me in understanding how the data is used and why.

The independent sample t-tests are obviously very useful since you can look at two groups of data. There was a lot going on in the data output but Dr. Grande gave detailed information on everything. @bethanyelstrom35669 жыл бұрын

Emily Taylor Good question, Emily! I know he mentioned that SPSS is very expensive so that must be a factor. But curious to hear what other factors are considered if both programs are available.
@jhoward11299 жыл бұрын
Mandy Moore I think that SPSS is preferred because it is made specifically for research. It is expensive because it is such a valuable tool. I am sure it can run more complex tests than Excel could as well. SPSS is so much easier to use and to understand, in my opinion, as well. I don't know that Excel is more commonly used in research, or you just mean in general.

As long as the data meet the assumptions of the statistic, they can be recorded as raw scores or standardized scores (e.g. T scores, Z scores).
