It's even been done without parachutes. Russian counter attack, Stalingrad. They dropped 100,000 men behind German lines. They had something like 20,000 parachutes. The rest were on low, slow planes. Spotters would scan for deep snowdrift and signal the troops who would let go of the wings and drop into the snow. 10% casualties on landing. So they had a little over 90,000 operational troops from the get go.

Persistence hunting doesn’t sound that scary but imagine it: you’re trying to escape a predator, you run as fast as you can, get as much distance between you as possible, but every time you stop to take a break you turn around and see it still following. You continue to run, getting more and more tired, more and more hungry, more and more dehydrated. They start to catch up. You try to stand, to flee, but you can’t. You collapse on the ground as they get closer and closer. And when they get to you, they end you. That’s the scary part, it’s not that they chase you fast, it’s that they Just. Don’t. Stop.

My only nitpick about this story is that it's criminally underestimating how badly humans would want to make a capital ship to stick our precious rail guns on. Hell, we're the species that made the A10 Warthog, a literal Gatling gun with jet engine and wings. Who's to say we wouldn't make a gigantic Gatling rail gun and put a capital ship around it?
@joshuafischer684 Жыл бұрын

Sounds about right.
@leechowning271211 ай бұрын
"Sky breaker rail guns" sounds like a kinetic kill platform. An orbital ship with underslung railguns for when that thing on the ground offended us too much. But the reason for never inventing capital ships is simple... space has no real value. You can go around. It is only PLANETS and STATIONS that make any real difference. With the right gear, a cargoship can drop troopers without the target realizing there is an issue until the dozens of dots enter atmosphere. It is like why we do not make capital ships on earth anymore. Missiles, drones and troops can kill anything.
