Very good explanation of variable focus, another method that can enhance a player’s ability to track the ball successfully is to simply close your eyes when you hear the impact of the ball on the strings. Your eyes will be closed for just a brief moment, and your own head will be very still throughout the hit and follow through. This should be done on groundstrokes only and not volleys. Roger Federer closes his eyes roughly 20% of the time on his groundstrokes. This perhaps explains how his head remains so still on contact with the ball. A comprehensive study of Federer’s eye movements was done a few years ago by Dr. Paul Hamori. When I first read this study I was very skeptical, however I have tried this unusual technique and it seems quite helpful. Also, I have seen some super slow motion of Federer’s upper body as he strikes the ball and he either squints or closes his eyes on contact.

*No. It’s not about how you look at the ball, but rather the reason why you look at the ball. If you know what to focus on, it takes care of itself. What you need to focus on goes far beyond the lettering on the ball or the elbow. As you said yourself: if the book is boring, you only look at it peripherally.*

Interesting. I'm a practical way. What does a player do to apply your philosophy?

So true. My best hits occur when I unintentionally look at my elbow. Now I have to do this with purpose. Thanks.

Another great tennis sermon! Going to try "see the elbow" (helps keep the head still). Merry Christmas!

Very original! One question, the ball and your elbow are on different distances from your head. Does it mean that you focus on the ball and keep your head still until your elbow comes into your peripheral vision? Or do you focus on the ball and then switch your focus to your elbow? Also, what would be the reference for a one handed backhand?

I don't get it, either. How does 'seeing' my elbow help me look at the ball better??...🤔🤨
