That is incorrect . He was singing till 2018. his surgery was many years later heart surgery in 2016 or so but this has been a myth some of Shinee fans keep spreading. Hideaki Tokunaga had a brain condition that prevented him from doing anything even singing in 2001 to 2002 he got physical therapy he went back to singing. He has moyamoya disease. Search it online.

no because as an italian person I was honestly shocked when I heard his pronunciation in nessun dorma. He KILLED it, it was so good. I remember being super surprised because I thought it was gonna be like a korean rendition or someting, but no. Also, interesting fact, Korean and Italian have very similar pronunciation (like the way we say our vowels and stuff, if that makes sense), which might've helped, but he also did extremly well with those sounds we don't have in common so big big props to him. He's so talented.

As far as I know, the original version of Rainy Blue was by a Japanese singer. I first heard the Chinese version of this song back in the mid 80s by a Hong Kong singer. Both are legendary vocalists. I was so surprised when Jinki covered the original version 30 years later 😊 The story behind the tears - the original singer of this song underwent surgery on his vocal cords and sadly didn't recover a very unique aspect of his voice. Jinki also has had surgery to remove vocal polyps - even though he has learnt how to sing again, I can imagine his fears as a singer's instrument is his voice. So to me Rainy Blue was really an emotional choice of song, not only for Jinki to show the world that he can sing again but it was also a way of paying tribute to a great singer who could not regain a part of his vocal identity.

Full context for rainy blue: Rainy blue is indeed a cover! Takunaga Hidaeki is the original artist- Onew chose this song and artist specifically for his solo stage in Tokyo Dome because they shared a similar story (CONTEXT: this concert was basically Onew’s official comeback after his vocal polyp removal surgery, after which he had to take a break from singing and even talking for a long time.. You can imagine all the fear and anxiety that came with that as a singer) Takunaga underwent the same surgery, hence the connection. This explains Onew’s tears at the end too. Fun fact: Takunaga watched this performance and ended up tweeting about how touched he was and how good the cover is 🥺

The thing about Onew is that he has a very powerful and breathtaking voice on his own but when it comes to duets, he just blends perfectly to whoever he sings with. I think a lot of people don't realize how versatile Onew's voice is or how good he is at harmonizing - and very quickly too. Recent proofs: all of his collabs on Sea of Hope. Plus Shinee's performance on I Can See Your Voice, where they had to sing with the competitor they picked. They were obviously told which parts of their song (Replay) to sing and which parts not to beforehand but otherwise they had no idea what the finalist would sound like. Girl hit them with a banger rendition of Replay and Onew was harmonizing with her flawlessly and with such ease, switching smoothly between being the perfect backup vocalist for her parts and being Shinee's leader Onew.

This performance of "Please Don't Go" was from their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in 2016. This was the last SHINee group concert tour that Jonghyun was involved in before he died. So that is why this is such a meaningful and poignant song for Shawols. On top of being a very beautiful performance, it's almost as if Onew and Jonghyun are singing to each other, asking each other to "please don't leave," etc. which, in hindsight, breaks our hearts every time we hear them sing those lines. Jonghyun and Onew were a POWERFUL combo. As you are starting to discover, Jonghyun is one of the best vocalist in Kpop and he was an expert at conveying emotion through his songs and performance. And as a musical stage actor, Onew knows how to tell a story through music and make you feel everything. As a lead actor in several musical productions, Onew knows how to project his voice to the back of the theatre and to fill a room with each note. "Please Don't Go" is a perfect example of why they are both so highly respected for their vocal talent.

"Blue" was Onew's solo debut and it was released Dec. 5, 2018, which was less than a week before he enlisted in the military, so he didn't even have any promotional activities for this song or album. Onew officially left for the military Dec.10, 2018, so his Voice (name of the album) was meant to keep us warm in this "Blue" world for the next 18 months, until he was discharged. What a powerful sendoff Onew gave us with this song and MV. (Unfortunately, no live performances of this song yet, because he didn't want to make a big deal about his enlistment, so he just released the album and quietly went off to fulfill his duty.) You are right, "Blue", both as a song and MV, is a masterpiece and it's full of symbolism. Not only does it tell the story of everything Onew and SHINee went through over the past few years, but it also is a sort of goodbye song to all the fans and a song to show how much Shawols' support has meant to Onew and how the fans are what gives him strength, etc. As you know, SHINee are known for their vocals, and as an SM Entertainment artist it is no surprise that Onew is shocking you with his voice, because you can't be an SM artist without having amazing dancing and singing skills, that's just a fact about the type of people SM selects to be a part of its company. How I interpret the story in the MV is it's all about the struggles Onew has gone through over the years and how he is searching for a "sense of belonging". Yes, SHINee's official symbol is a diamond, and that's the official symbol for this song and album -- a diamond with 5 faces. If you hold SHINee's lightstick up to a solid surface you will see the reflection the diamond makes is a five point star, with each point representing one of the members. Also, as you know, SHINee's fan color is pearl aqua blue/green. So the blue light he refers to in the lyrics is talking about SHINee's blue light that represents the fans and the members and everything to do with them as a group. Hence the multiple meanings of the title of the song, "Blue." In the MV, in the beginning you see the diamond sitting on a pedestal and it is being reflected in 5 mirrors, however, one of the mirrors is cloudy or covered in dust, which probably represents Jonghyun and the fact that even though he is not with us anymore, he is still part of everything SHINee does and he is still very important to Onew. The way I see it, the blindfolded people represent Onew's scandals and how the public is judging him. They are judging him blindly, without actually seeing him, and don't even care about the truth. About a year before this, in 2017, Onew was involved in a sexual harassment scandal where he was accused of groping a girl at a nightclub when he was drunk. The story that was told is that he was extremely drunk, to the point where he couldn't even stand without help, and while trying to stand he grabbed the girl's leg. She eventually dropped the charges, but the police still investigated. Onew spent several months in seclusion, out of the public eye during the investigation and it wasn't clear whether the Korean public would ever forgive him or allow him to come back. However, he was eventually cleared of all charges, etc. And just when it looked as though SHINee would be able to get back to normal activities again, it wasn't long after that that Jonghyun died. And just to put it all into context, Onew's birthday is Dec.14 and Minho's birthday is Dec. 9 -- Jonghyun died Dec. 18, 2017. So, as you can see, a lot happened in the span of 2 years. "Blue" reflects on all of that. There are 3 fish floating in a protective glass bubble which I see as representing the 3 remaining members -- Minho, Key and Taemin -- which Onew feels like he needs to protect as the leader and oldest of the group. The white rose is also in a box, and some say it represents the fans -- and possibly Jonghyun -- and how by putting them in a protective case Onew is saying how precious the fans (and Jonghyun) are to him and how he wants to protect them. The shooting star, represents many things -- his family, his members and fans, etc. -- that are guiding him back home, after his scandal were he lived isolated. It was almost as if he was saying he was trying to follow the star's path but then something happened that derailed him and made him lose his way -- probably Jonghyun's incident -- and for a while he was no longer able to see his "home" from afar anymore. His expression is sort of shocked and afraid, and then he sees the same people that judged him once again looking at him, but more intensely, which was represented by the fact that the blindfolded people grew and became more menacing as things started to pileup. It was almost as if they were judging him, like they were blaming him for everything that happened. And that is probably how he felt all along. But then you see the shooting star make a path directly to where he was standing, which lit up his path and allowed him to see again. The star also provided light to the diamond once again, which helped Onew finally find his way back home. Back to a place where he is starting to feel safe, accepted and loved once again. He put the diamond on the table, and in its reflection there was shown 5 diamonds. If you notice one of them is blurry ... but even though you can't see all 5 of them clearly anymore, they are still 5. I also see the fact that in the end when he puts the diamond back on the pedestal it's almost as if he is saying he is putting the fans and his members and everyone that is precious to him, etc. on a shelf for safe keeping while he is away in the military and he will be back for us once again when he comes back. I think in the end what he is saying is that he has finally accepted everything and is starting to come to terms with it all. However, he is still not 100% OK or happy yet, but he is slowly getting there. It's the power of the light that is produced by the "diamond" -- which represents the power from the fans -- that has helped him to find his place in this "Blue" world and to come to terms with everything. That's just a little bit of what I took away from this MV, but I know there is so much more that can be discovered from it and so much more meaning behind every detail. We could probably go on for days analyzing everything and come up with multiple meanings for it all. :D Onew did pretty well with this song and album, he received some pretty good feedback for his first release from his solo debut, and we wouldn't expect anything less from a member of SHINee. :D I am so proud of him!! Onew topped iTunes charts in 28 countries, topped the world charts and was No. 1 in the U.S. with this album all soon after release -- and that was without any promotions. :D

I have been hoping you would react to more Jinki thank you so much! For me personally: his voice is my favorite voice. I never ever get tired of hearing him sing, his voice is so beautiful and healing. Blue has a lot of symbolism but the meaning behind them has never been explained, so it's all open to interpretation. My personal interpretation is that it deals with everthing that happened in 2017, the accusation and judgement, the huge loss, and trying to deal with it and finding again what is important in his life, the people and things he loves and focussing on that (that's why I think it loops, getting up, keep going, focussing on what is important is an everyday task). I am deeply in love with this song and the MV and it never fails to move me. If you enjoy songs like Rainy Blue I highly suggest watching Sea of Hope. Not only is it the most relaxing, healing show, but you also get Onew singing a lot of songs like that in a beautiful scenery. The reason why the audience screams so loud and Onew cries during this performance of "Rainy Blue" is because this was Onew's first solo performance since having vocal cord surgery. It was a really scary surgery because there was no guarantee that he would ever be able to sing again, let along at the same quality as he did before the surgery. Onew spent about 3 months after his surgery not being able to speak at all in order to give his vocal cords time to heal, and then he had to learn to sing all over again. This performance was proof to himself and fans that he could still do it and that nothing had changed. Onew chose to do a cover of this song as his first solo after the surgery because the song is connected to everything he had to go through and it is really meaningful. As I understand it, the original Japanese singer had the same surgery as Onew, and he was never able to sing as well again. As I have heard Onew explain, "Rainy Blue" was so meaningful to him at this time because the song is about how the original singer had to give up something that was so precious to him, etc. The song is kind of saying how the world around him kept moving forward while time stood still for him during his recovery because of how hard it was to deal with the fact that he might not be able to keep singing. For the original singer, he kept chasing the happiness of singing but sadly his voice was never the same. Luckily Onew's surgery had a much better outcome than the original singer and it seems to not have had much of an affect on his voice. Thank goodness, because the world would be a much sadder place if we could no longer hear Onew's beautiful voice. :D Onew is a member of SHINee, so of course he is an amazing singer and performer. That's why the members of SHINee are some of the most well respected singers and artists, and why they are one of the top groups in the industry. SHINee are the golden standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard, and it's what all other groups strive to reach. If you are impressed with Onew's vocal range in these performances, just wait until you see his performance of "Friend," kzbin.info/www/bejne/ombae3evoNRosJo. Onew broke the record for the longest continuous note at 40+ seconds, just because he could. As you are starting to discover, SHINee are one of the most famous artists in Japan and they are even more famous than a lot of Japanese artists -- most Japanese people don't even consider SHINee foreign artists. SHINee debuted in Japan in 2011 and all of the members are fluent in Japanese. SHINee spends about 50% of their career in Japan and for every Korean album they have a Japanese album. And their Japanese albums are not just remakes of their Korean songs, but they have a whole host of Japanese exclusive tracks. When SHINee holds concerts in Japan they are almost entirely in Japanese and they never need a translator when they interact with the audience. They are so popular in Japan that Japanese interviewers often travel to Korea just to interview them.

Yay all about my bias!! Onew and Jjong together are something special- iirc Jjong once said in an interview that he feels most comfortable singing duets with Onew, singing together for over 10 years will do that though! I also love that pointed out how Jjong sings because I've always felt that Onew and Jjong approached the 'performance' aspect of their singing oppositely. Jjong puts his body into it, he wants you to feel every note like it's the most important thing he's ever sang, and he's putting his whole being and body into it. Onew makes his singing appear effortless, everything is understated, I've always described as he exudes emotion from every part of his body (especially apparent with melancholy) without actually physically emoting that much. Also some context for Rainy Blue that concert was the first one they held after Onew had his vocal surgery. He couldn't talk for months (there are some variety shows at that time they went on when Onew couldn't talk and the rest of SHINee do their best to translate/speak for him). There was no guarantee that he would be able to sing at the same level or even sing again and he had to basically reteach his body from scratch. SHINee don't/didn't talk about that time that much (but definitely correct me if I'm wrong) but from the bit they've mentioned it was hard for all them. Onew didn't know if his voice would be able to hold up for an entire concert so being able to get through this solo perfectly made him really emotional. I also do think Taemin wanted to support him which is why he's on stage playing the piano because Taemin loves Onew probably more than the rest of us, Onew was basically his first vocal coach even before they knew they would be on a team together.

He wrote lyrics for shine on you and he also sang dear spring one of 3 ost he did this year. Onew's performance of "Nessun Dorma" was performed in 2016 as a solo stage during one of SHINee's Japanese concerts, but it is not the first time Onew has performed this song, he has been performing it since SHINee's early days. Whether it's a performance from 2011 or this one from 2016, there isn't much difference -- his voice is a little more mature in 2016, but it was still impressive from the beginning. Onew is not trained in opera, but he had been training as a singer for more than 10 years when this performance took place, and he has an amazing range and understanding of his voice. He is also a musical stage actor, so he understands how to project his voice to the back of the theater and he knows how to tell a story through the performance of the song. "Nessun Dorma" is an Italian song, so I am sure he spent time studying an original version of the song, and really worked on perfecting the pronunciation of the words. He doesn't speak Italian, but he could fool you into thinking he can with this performance. ;p Onew is know for having clear and perfect pronunciation when it comes to languages -- he, and all the SHINee members, seem to have an ear for being able to pick up on the nuances, inflections and phrasing in different languages that make them seem like native speakers. It's that attention to detail that makes them that much more impressive. Onew is a member of SHINee, so of course he is an amazing singer and performer.That's why the members of SHINee are some of the most well respected singers and artists, and why they are one of the top groups in the industry. They are all just as speechless as you. :) The Tokyo Dome is one of the largest concert venues in Japan and there is an unwritten rule that in order to get permission to hold an event there you have to be able to fill it to capacity. SHINee are so popular as Japanese artists that they are one of the few acts that are actually asked by the concert promoters to hold another concert there. Most people have to ask to hold an event at the Tokyo Dome, but with SHINee, executives actually contact SM and ask them to please hold another event there. SHINee are so popular in Japan that they know they will have no problem selling out within minutes of tickets going on sale and most likely they will have to have multiple day events because fan demand will be so high. SHINee has even held fan meeting events at the Tokyo Dome that weren't even full concerts and were still able to sell out. Which just goes to show you, how popular they really are.

I absolutely agree with you about Onew's voice. The reason why his debut solo album was called "Voice" (plus the whole plagiarism aspect to match the other's lol). It's like he can change his voice to what the song needs. I call him a vocal chameleon lol. If you were to watch his variety show that had aired this past summer called "Sea of Hope", on it he sings many, many covers of different songs and all of them he sings just a little differently. It's absolutely incredible and I just cannot get over how he is able to do that. He works so hard to keep bettering his instrument by continuing to have vocal lessons and you can tell that it is paying off.

Quite an interesting collection of songs and they all show just how great a vocalist and collaborator Onew is. He is just so gifted that he can use various aspects of his voice to suit the tone and emotion of the song. He's also such a generous collaborator that he never overpowers whoever he is singing with. He's one of the best (if not THE best) vocalists in Kpop and yet he remains so humble. Heck, he was able to encourage a rather jittery Lee Dong Wook (who was in full Shawol fanboy mode) to sing one of Shinee's favourite songs, An Encore, on Sea of Hope. I love how Taemin was pretty much low-profile during that performance of Rainy Blue, making sure that the attention was on his hyung. There is a longer clip where Taemin was playing a few songs on the piano for Onew before he plays Rainy Blue. At the end of the performance, Taemin joins Onew for a bow. I'm really glad that Onew has a lot of projects this year, and more and more people are getting to know about him - Sea of Hope, Midnight Sun, Korea on Stage, drama OSTs, etc. He also guested on Minho's Best Choice where he was so cute and the energy between him and Minho was so adorable the show went into overtime! Great selection to hear the best boy! Taemin is my ult bias however onew is my fav voice in K-pop. With Rainy Blue, I believe that was the first time singing after his vocal surgery not knowing if he still could or not so he was very emotional 😭❤️

Onew is one of those few singers that I just trust. I don't ever hold my breath when he goes for high notes or difficult melodies. I can just close my eyes and trust it as he sweeps me along with the song

Ooh, thank you for reacting to Nessun Dorma. I was listening to a lot of Shinee after Don't Call Me dropped last year, and when I found Nessun Dorma I just listened to it on a loop. What's odd is that I am not partial to opera vocals on the whole, and I know this isn't a full-on opera-style thing, but it was my favorite thing for several weeks. I find Onew the loveliest in the group and I like his voice best, but as you said, they are all exceptional singers. Now to hear your reaction is just the best, and seeing the cat was an added bonus! For me , Onew has the most recognizeable voice in Kpop. His tone and timbre are very unique. I think he's one of the best vocalist in Kpop , but unfortunately so underrated and not often included in the list of best vocalist in Kpop. His personality itself is so humble and so kind. I dont know why he didn't release any solo /solo album after his military enlistment. Even his first solo album was so long overdue.

Melancholy. The word you're looking for in Blue is...melancboly (oddly enough, Taemin and Key also have strong streaks of melancholy in their work as well). Many theories abound about Blue, and I'll add that apparently much of the video is very similar to the European movie Mother w/Jennifer what's-her-face. I've not seen it myself and have no opinion. Big voice Onew? Watch Rainy Blue if you haven't already. So....you need to watch Sea of Hope/바라단 바라. His collabs with Sungwoo Junga in particular...yeah. Jinki changes his voice to suit the song, as well as whom he's singing with. His trot songs with Luna are the stuff of legend!! Oh, Please Don't Go is from 2009's Romeo, their second album. And one more thing! I highly recommend his voice only lives on vlive - free concert hours. Like Jonghyun, Jinki is just pure music, y'know what I mean? All of SHINee are, although we have yet to hear a lot from Minho (please watch Yumi's Cells on Netflix...you won't regret)...

The latest example is singing Selene in Sea of hope - where he said that right before. You have to check this out their voices were so well matched. Also whoever dressed him in Rainy blue - you have all my love :D And yeah, Taemin gave him a hug. It was a big moment for him. Blue was right before he got to the army, I think the video has several separate references and the plot is a loop. I can't wait for his new song I hope Bekhyun in the background is okay :D

These are my thoughts on Blue. The video tells Onew's story. In the beginning scene before the opening credits, you see things that were frozen starting to thaw out. Among the items are things he likes, an old record, books, and other trinkets. Meaning that whatever was repressed he has started to feel again. He wakes up, seemingly solemn and lost. The house represents Onew's feelings and emotional state. The diamond I believe represents SHINee's reputation or Shawols. It can be taken both ways honestly as Onew carries this diamond throughout the whole video. The shooting star is his purpose. He feels compelled to chase after it. The storm represents tumultuous times, while he's barefoot in the water seemingly calm water, meaning he's at peace in his sadness at that moment. The fish, represent the remaining SHINee members, there are three white fish. They are all in their own state of morning while Onew watches over them. The rose, is Jonghyun. The rose shed its outer shell (his body) and his inner core (his soul) remains vibrant and never changing. Notice that the rose is encased and floating. Meaning Onew feels empowered to protect Jonghyun in his now current state. The people with the blindfolds represent people judging him blindly and the girl with no heart I believe is to represent the girl that started a scandal about him toward the end of 2018. He then looks ahead and finds himself in the distance. He recognizes that person, that person he used to be, then tragedy strikes, which is symbolized by water on his hands and he turns around and loses himself again. He notices the shadow cast over him in the water, while studying the water on his hands trying to come up with a reason. He turns around to find all these people who had been scrutinizing him blindly suddenly becoming gigantic. For the first time, he's afraid, shocked, and overwhelmed, and at that moment the shooting star comes and fills the diamond. He's reminded of his purpose. He seemingly forgets and ignores the giants and refocuses on his house, which is now burned and a shadow of its former self. He places the now-lit diamond back in its place, you'll find five mirrors but now one is dusted over and no longer reflects the light coming from the diamond like it used to. I cried when I watched this video for the first time too. The song is gorgeous, his vocals are amazing, and the video is the perfect fit for the song. Lots of symbolism. As others have said, Rainy Blue was his comeback after having vocal polyp surgery, and he wasn't sure if he was ever going to sing live again. It was a song that meant a lot to him as the artist who wrote Rainy Blue, also had the same surgery and never regain his voice back. This is a long-winded comment, but I felt the need to explain.

There's tons of symbolism in the Blue MV. You're totally right to catch the 5 reflections. Diamonds are also the symbol of shinee, and pearl aqua the color, so blue is both the description of the tone but also has significance as a color of shinee and shinee world. I'm sure there's whole essays out there from people who know more than me but I'm a really big fan of the people judging him who are wearing blindfolds. Very much showing that the public can watch and criticize but really they are doing so without knowing anything. Then at that moment that seems so bleak, the diamond reappears and seems to be re-energized with light. Remember "shinee" means those that receive light or are shined upon. It really seemed to be his message to of hope and reassurance to shawols. Essentially letting us know that even with all of the recent hardship and the fact that he was leaving for the military, things could be okay in the future as long as we support each other.

Him crying at the end of his Rainy Blue cover was the performance I mentioned in a previous video’s comment, that he was crying because he wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to sing like that after his throat surgery, and when he did you can see how relieved and happy he was because he loves music and singing so much, and it’s still emotional watching it now….also, the video for Blue is very symbolic and reflects his emotional state at that time when they were still reeling from Jjong’s death and he was about to enlist for his mandatory military service, so it was an emotional time for him, to say the least, and in the video the big gems represent the members, he looks at the 5th one, and that part of the video is like him saying goodbye to/accepting his passing

Glad you decided to check out more of his solos! Onew is my first male kpop bias and one of the major reasons why us because of his voice. Rainy Blue was a special performance for his personally as the comments here already mentioned but yeah it's my favourite performance of him till this day. And yesss!!! One Year Later is such a classic, it's on the Genie album. Fun fact he has the record for the longest note in kpop, it was like 40 seconds or something so yep breath support is PRESENT. He has actually appeared on a drama. He was one of the casts of the drama Descendants of the Sun, which was an insanely popular drama, and he got praises for his acting.

The first thing you notice about his voice is his tone but then you hear the projection like wow. Watching them live Jonghyun always has the mic basically inside his mouth and Onew has it the furthest away. This is preference and style as well but it's interesting. Also about the rock thing, someone else probably mentioned it but he did do the musical Rock of Ages as the lead! I don't think there's a lot of footage from it though.
