I'd say DoD is the best game in the series on a mechanical level, definitely went all in on the action that the series had been slowly gravitating towards since 2. I can certainly understand why some don't like it, but I've always enjoyed it. 2 is still my favorite for the replayability but I'm always going back and forth between this and 3 as the best. 3 is the peak of the traditional style, DoD is fun as all hell with so much to dig into. But on the other hand, Warlords/Genma is easily the best in terms of the Japanese RE spin off it was envisioned as. Like always, I find each of the 4 can be strongly argued to be the best based on what you are looking for. Such a fantastic series.

That's so funny when you said "It just dawned on me I don't need to qualify all those years ago because just saying I rented a video game is already time stamping this as happening decades ago...". I didn't really think about it, but it's so true. It seems so normal to think "oh yeah, it wasn't that long ago we were renting games at Blockbuster" but it has been a really long time! I remember renting SNES and Genesis games there in early 90's haha...man, I remember them being the BIGGEST company in that business and buying out all the smaller video rental places I would go to (Warehouse, music plus, etc.). It's strange to me thinking there are people that never experienced the idea of "renting" games and movies haha. It was like a 'ritual' of sorts going to Blockbuster with your roommates/friends/girlfriends on a Friday night and spending 20-30 minutes there figuring out what you were going to watch that evening; this was all before grabbing a pizza or other munchies at Albertsons/Vons (not Walmart) to go with it...and some other greens of course : ). I just realized in less than 2 years, it'll be the 20 year mark since graduating H.S....ya Jared, we are getting old haha..Jesus. As far as this game goes, this is the one Onimusha game I never played sadly. I worked at Best Buy in my 20's as a Manager of the warehouse so I'd see all the new games/movies come in, so I was always privy to new stuff that came out. I was just so busy with College/Work/Partying (I was in my 20's)/Girlfriends I had zero time really to play video games. The last game I played as a "kid" was Silent Hill 3 when that came out I was a Senior in High School. When Wii came out my roommates and I got it and shockingly our girlfriends LOVED playing it (combined with Alcohol and ski's for the snow...) all night haha. I remember so many amazing nights of debauchery with Mario Kart, Mario Party and Wii Sports in general. Back then a girl being into video games and not hating them was SUPER rare. It was the most uncommon thing ever to meet a girl that was interested at all. If you played video games in general in the 90's then you were a total 'nerd' and would be ridiculed by others.

Just wanna say, It was awesome seeing you finally cover onimusha and even spotlighting Dawn of dreams in this retrospective. I was in the same camp as someone who loved the first 3 onimusha games but wasn't big on Dawn of Dreams, but I gave it another chance and it really won me over. now I love it just as much as others and consider it a huge fav of mine.. Dawn of dreams I feel is a underappreciated action game from capcom even outside of the onimusha series. For me it's up with other games in it's genre and while it is different from other onimusha games, you really can't say DoD is like any other action games and I think that's awesome. The callbacks to other onimusha games was really well done and I think it really succeeds as a send off for the series that I don't feel it needed to be continued on. It kinda bums me out that the game never really did that well, cause you tell capcom put a lot of love into it and they never forgot about it as soki is in TvC and other capcom games. I think out of the onimusha games, DOD would be the easiest to do a re-release as there isn't any of the likeness rights and is completely 3D so I think a remaster would be super ideal.

One thing people don't talk about enough is the SOUNDTRACK! It's incredible. Young me really liked the flashy action and cool/anime style and story in comparison to the rest of the series' darker and more serious (though still wacky at times) horror/survival theme. The graphics were also great for the PS2 era. But the most memorable thing after all these years is definitely the music! The overall soundtrack is great, Soki/Jubei/Roberto themes are a blast, and the moment you hear Tenkai's theme you instantly realize who he is. Wish we could get a remaster for the entire Onimusha series.

People in the comments saying they like this, this is their favorite Onimusha because of the vast choices of weapons, huge improvement in battles and FIVE ONIMUSHAS YOU CAN CHOOSE TO PLAY is what they like! If you are a hardcore Onimusha Fan who likes the series to stick to its Samurai Spirit story and fighting then the best in the franchise is Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny hands down! This is the most shitty Onimusha in the franchise, Dawn Of Dreams! This ain't a sequel this game was a FAN SERVICE because CapCom only planned a trilogy and no more fourth game. But technically Dawn Of Dreams according to release order is not the fourth game! The fourth game according to release order is Onimusha 3: Demon Siege 2004 and has the BEST INTRODUCTION IN THE FRANCHISE! The third game is Onimusha: Blade Warriors released in 2003 and the only Onimusha fighting game similar to Super Mario Smash. Oni Dreams is the FIFTH GAME IN THE SERIES released back in 2006 and was the least successful in the franchise!

Growing up, this and 1 were my favorite while 2 and 3 didn't do it for me. I enjoyed the world of 2 but 3 lost me entirely. DoD just fulfilled that replayable RPG for me which is a niche I couldn't find anywhere at the time while also being that "Feudal Japan" setting I still love to this day. The story was ok, it does get convoluted occasionally but the ending really hit me harder than most games at that time because we grew to love the characters in such a short time. The multi-player was good, but too bad it was super limited as far as pvp goes. The co-op part of it though, absolutely amazing. I never finished the demon realm since I was too busy trying to just grind out everyone to max, which I usually just do the critical chain. My record was like 36 at one point with Roberto and that was absolutely the peak for me. Loved this retrospective on the series. Where next?

I finally got around to beat this game so I could watch this video. Its been in my watch later list forever:p A younger me would not like the anime aesthetics this game went for as I'm not really into anime. But older/current me can enjoy it for what it is, and despite not liking anime the style looks good and suits this game. I do prefer Onimusha 1-3 but I really liked this game too. It has enough of the Onimusha DNA to still feel and play like Onimusha despite being very different both in gameplay and artstyle. That said, sometimes less is more and I prefer the original tailor made set of upgradable weapons, each with their own unique attacks/functionality and strenghts compared to the aubundance of weapons and the more traditional RPG levleing in Dawn of Dreams. I also prefer the survivial feel and the eerie soundtrack and atmosphere of the older titles. Even Oni 3 despite being a more action focused spectacle maintained the same feel. It sounds like I'm hating on the game, but I'm not:p I really liked this game and its story and the soundtrack was very good, I just prefer the old style more:) And the combat though different was very satisfying. yes the game is definatley different from the first three games but I don't understand where the hate comes from. This is for the most part an incredible made game for its time and its story is a great tie in to the other Onimusha games. The only gripe I have with this game is the final boss which isn't hard yet infuriatingly hard at the same time. But not in a good way. He almost made me quit the game right at the end, and watch the ending on youtube. What I mean is that he is incredibly spongy and repetative and the reason why I failed so many times was not in a "From Software git gud" kinda way. But because there was so much happening on screen that Soki locked onto different things in other directions than the energy balls he was supposed to swing back at the boss. Gawd if my PS2 wasn't an antique rarity at this point I've would have thrown it out the window:P But despite pulling my hair out at the final boss I'm really glad I played this game. The story is intersting and bonkers over the top, yet still manage to weave in serious historical events and people just like the previous games. And I loved every second of it! And the gameplay was for the most part great:D

Based on your other videos I came in 100% expecting you to hate this with it being such a departure tone wise from the other games, but I am happy to see I was wrong lol. I LOVE this entry. Very different, yet a lot of the same. I think it stand equal with and in some ways, above Onimusha 3.

Oh, also definitely complete the Dark Realm if you're still playing. You'll unlock new weapon options from story mode at level 50. There's also a code to play it co-op. =)

This is a series that I want Capcom to bring back for next consoles and PC! Imagine a new Onimusha game running on the RE Engine used on the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes!

Avalanche Reviews well my friend you clearly have the patients of a saint cause sure the game is okay and such but it just did not pull me in like First Onimusha and Third, true Tenkai aka Samanosuke returned but it was not the same he during the timeskip from 3 to DOD became less a badass and more just a guy who has vast knowledge of things. but one of the best parts about him being in this is when you first meet him and his oni 1 theme starts playing at first i was like wait isn't that Samanosuke's theme!? and then i see him with a familiar guantlet which was now gold and then him mentioning Kaede and ending with Akane narrating that she heard Arin say Tenkai's real name. now this game's gameplay was fun but like i said it just did not pull me in like the previous games and this is also where Capcom started to struggle with their games thankfully Devil May Cry 5 and Resident Evil 7 more or less revived Capcom's gaming legacy

Is it just me or does Soki remind anyone of Yuri from Shadow Hearts if he was a samurai? I don't know why I just get those vibes from him. In any case, I love this game but it has the misfortune of forever being shadowed by 2 and 3, I prefer it to the first Onimusha though. Honestly it's really close between 2, 3 and Dawn Of Dreams but 2 and 3 are tied for top position for me while Dawn Of Dreams is a very close second. I really likes the changes a lot and I loved collecting lots of different weapons, it felt like it was a fine balance of my two favourite genres, RPG and Beat Em Up and honestly I would argue that it can compete with either genre though to be honest I don't think genres mean anything anyways so the best way I can describe Dawn Of Dreams is that it was a game that catered specifically to my tastes, crazy and OTT with some funny moments but with an action packed combat system. The game is far from perfect but its imperfections are tied to my enjoyment. I love grinding in action games so the leveling system didn't bother me, quite the opposite actually. The lack of charged attacks is the only reason why it isn't up there with 2 and 3, that and the fact that many of the new moves, while cool looking don't offer much in terms of utility, though some of them do come in handy and are fun to use which I do appreciate. I also like how they made Issen's more accessible as they are a big part of the series and are so satisfying to pull off. It's still good old Onimusha no matter which way you look at it. Plus I really liked the test of valor challenges too, those mixed things up nicely. I found Onimusha 3 to be polished to perfection and honestly you just can't beat that, the formula needed to change for that reason, Onimusha 3 perfected what it set out to do so they needed something fresh and I would say that the game is faithful, yet diverse enough to feel like a solid evolution of the series. Plus the soundtrack of this game is god tier because it was composed by one of my favourite composers, Hideyuki Fukasawa, the same guy who composed the soundtrack for Chaos Legion. He is the best composer Capcom has and honestly he should be allowed to work on Capcom's other franchises like Devil May Cry/Sengoku Basara because he is criminally overlooked. Dawn Of Dreams' soundtrack expresses this so damn well but if you like this game's soundtrack then Chaos Legion's soundtrack is a must listen. Plus I love how Tenkai got a Sieg Wahrheit costume as his alternate attire, Chaos Legion is the game that got me into this style of game so for me that was a big deal. Any representation of Chaos Legion in any videogame is deserving of praise, heck they don't even feature any of its characters in Marvel Vs Capcom yet Onimusha Dawn Of Dreams has the only Chaos Legion cameo that I know of and that's awesome. I also really liked Soki as a character in this game, after playing Devil May Cry 4, I was assuming that Soki was going to be another deadweight character like Nero but he wasn't, he carried himself throughout the whole game and he was a badass throughout, he wasn't just a lackluster replacement for Samanosuke/Jubei Yagyu, he was a solid character in his own right. Ultimately this is the ultimate fanservice game for me It could really use a remaster though, this game looks gorgeous but I'm sure you've noticed that it looks very grainy on ps2, an upscale is a must to get the most out of this game visually... which means that it's the perfect game for you to cover since you're that guy who will go on and on about upscaling, well this is the game that would benefit the most from it if you ask me. All in all, Onimusha is hands down the best Capcom franchise, you will never change my mind on this. This game is part of the reason why because despite its changes it still manages to be solid.

The thing I remembered the most about this game is the opening theme. It's so aggressively jpop that I initially hated it, but then grew to love. The same experience I had with the opening song of Dragon's Dogma as well... Ahh good times.

My 12 y.o. Anime crazed son, loves this game. It is the game that showed him how amazing the PS2 actually was. Not too shabby, for a “Boomer” console 😂

Great Retrospective for my favorite entry in the series! I think this is the (inofficial) masterpiece of Yoshinori Ono (which explains the Fighting Game vibes). About the camera problems: you can flick the right stick up twice, to zoom out a little bit. You have to do it again in each room, but it's manageable;-)
