The tx-NR616 is the best if you can fix the sound witch i did for 1 dollar if any one has a problem with the sound still not working comment me and ill tell you how to fix it like new for only 1 dollar and if u have the item at home the it will be a free fix and u will not have to spend any money at all

Just been given one as a gift. Can l use my normal pioneer stereo speakers? l am not a fan of all these 5.1, 7.1 speakers

Yes you can but if you was given the tx-NR616 a lot of them the sound will go out. But dont you worry if that ever happens i know a cheap easy fix that even a 4 year old could do. If this happens this is what you do. 1 take the top of 2 move the fan out of the way 3 find the chip on the hdmi board that says dps 4 take a hot light bulb that is still on and put it on the chip for about a minute or 2 5 make sure u have one speaker in and the system plugged in power it up and with in 20 seconds sound will come out. 6 put the fan back as fast as you can put the top back on as fast as you can and use black duck tape to cover most of the vents. You have to do this so the dps chip stays warm the fan will keep the system cool so it will not burn out. Please note dont ever turn it off doing so the dps chip will cool down and not work again i did this about a month ago its been working ever sense its a bad ass unit. And the fact i got it for free because it had no sound and it was like a 1 dollar fix because ill i needed was duck tape thats not a bad price. And sense i have my old onkyo dual tape deck on top of it you cant even see the duck tape any ways its as good as new.

Which one is better the Tx-NR616 or the Tx-NR515?

Erick, they are pretty comparable. The 515 is 80 watts per channel whereas the 616 is 100. We did a side by side comparison and the differences are very narrow. However, which one is better? The answer is the 616 but only by the narrowest of margins. If THX certification is important to you then you'll want the 616.
