Your video was so helpful to me! My contract will not be renewed, I have been a good teacher, but they said that my style wasnt for them. I have such a hard time being this over the top teacher, super loud, and giggly, its just not my style and it was what they wanted. I felt so nervous knowing that I was being watched, if I wanted to have a conversation with a student after class and they wanted to converse I felt like I couldnt because they had such strict guidelines. I was dissapointed, but at the same time relieved. It has been a very stressful time trying to meet their super high standards.

Absolutely top tier video my friend, here's my personal list of cons for Magic Ears: 1. Low booking rate for the first year (they're now super oversaturated) 2. Temporarily banned from bookings for any reason 3. "Teaching with passion" = hopped up on adderall to them 4. Need to manually fill out a PDF form to get paid 5. Horrible courseware with bugs/glitches 6. Constant email spam and Skype spam from management 7. Will ask for unpaid meetings at 4am US Eastern Time 8. Four students at once with no individual volume slider 9. Post-class ratings are often done by the students, not parents 10. ...and more that's all just from the top of my head 😂 Qkids > Gogokid > Any Other ESL Company > Magic Ears 🤣

@@onlineteacherdude1284 I try to weigh company: look at advantages vs. disadvantages. For me what sticks out the most is that teachers are weighed. Everyone starts on the first step of the totem pole and instead of me selected how many hours I want to work they are dictated to me unless I am a Master teacher. I taught in a B&M classroom for 34 yrs. and now, I am back to square one. If the company gives the Master teachers the most bookings does they mean that they do not have enough students to go around? As mentioned above ~attending meetings at 3 am CST time- they would be a deal breaker. Now that .I have all the companies ranked there is not one company that clearly shines above the rest. I have the following on my list: EF, Dada, Qkids, SayABC, Itutor, Palfish, VIPkid, GoGOKid, MagicFears, ALO7 and Itutor. Dada limits new teachers to 15 hrs,, you all mentioned that MagicFears give about 50% bookings, VIPkid- not everyone gets the bookings ( I think they may hire too many). Tired Teacher Mama-cast a negative spell on most of them.I was really hoping I could make the decision on the hours. I will go on a Carnival cruise, get a huge drank and put 10 umbrellas in its and draw umbrellas to figure out where I apply. if I spin the Umbrella three times and the wind picks it up and blows it off to sea that will be the company I apply for!

@@onlineteacherdude1284 I still have not hired. I want my first place to be a winner. I looked at ALO7. I felt everything was peachy I saw the pay. Incentives are 5%-35% but, they did not say what they were given for. base is 7.50 for 25 min. class. While they had plenty of hours one needs to decide should I work for ABC and get paid $20/h or XYZ at @15/hr. I figured I could do 21 hrs for the week: $315 vs. $420. Too me the latter would be better. Gogo has many hours available on weekends so, if I want to get my hours higher that would be the better of the two. So, I am not looking at GoGO Kid, I need to know do I need a 40 hr Tefl or a 120 Tefl. I need to get started on that ASAP

I couldn't agree more. I think when Magic Ears teachers leave ME they realise that it isn't necessary. However, it's their brand and how they like to market themselves, but I never felt I was really teaching students that much content because so much of the "over the top" stuff there was. Some teachers love it and that's great, no disrespect to anyone who works at magic ears. I just don't like how they feel their teachers are the "best' because they can act like a blues clues television show...sorry, it just isn't true.

Good video Tim, and some valid points. although valid depending on many things like personality , group vs single, platform used and too many more to list here. I have also worked and done numerous 1v1 classes. some for Vipkid, and many for the now closed UStalk and 1v4 classes for Alo7. I can say I have enjoyed them all. They all had there ups and downs and I always try to be understanding and roll with the punches and it has served me very well everywhere I have been, including Magic Ears who I have been a proud part of almost since the beginning 3 years ago. A point to always remember when coming into this industry is that whatever we see now will definitely change in the next few years and new videos will surface as new people become disgruntled and switch companies as the change wasn't for them. The companies are very new as this is a new business for the most part and a lot of companies opened quickly to meet the massive demand and as time goes by like any brand new company, changes will be made. Adaptability is a great characteristic to have for the long haul. As far as the energy goes yeah, a lot of energy is what I have always brought to class and it is usually contagious. If that isn't you that is fine. I have found it works for kids in real classrooms as well as online and it is more necessary online in group classes where you cannot keep the student occupied for the entire 25 minutes as you have 3 others to attend to as well. Those voice changes and animated gestures do wonders for keeping them looking at you and not the real cat walking through their living room. And many people are having a lot of fun while doing it so it is not as much work for them as for you for example where it causes you stress. I can tell you this: I would be willing to bet close to 99% of people who can teach Magic Ears like yourself Tim,(stress or no stress) would be able to get hired at Vipkid and just about any online school and the majority would be more successful than most. But reverse this and this percentage would drop rapidly. Every single disgruntled ex Magic Ears teacher I know of anyway is a great online teacher somewhere else. They just didn't like it at Magic Ears. But there are some incredible teachers, especially at the top of ME who could basically work anywhere they wanted as an online teacher but choose Magic Ears because it is what they like. I am one of them.

DO NOT APPLY TO Magic Ears. They engage in age prejudice. I did a great job giving my 8-minute interview, which I prepared hours for. They had encouraged me saying I would be a perfect fit and could probably get a secondary position as in interviewer. For the interview, I had several fun props: a ball to toss, a stuffed dolphin, a spy glass, and I even wore a cap with the inflatable ears. I was very playful and energetic for the entire 8 minutes. The interviewer told me the next step would be the trial 25-minute class, where I would be taught how to use the platform better, and suggested that I get a headset. So, I expected to be hired. Oh, but the next day I was told I didn't pass. IMPOSSIBLE. I practiced their demo video over and over and did virtually all the same things. I am American with two Master's degrees and over 20 years of experience teaching ESL. But, I'm 70 -- That's the problem.

Hello - I'm an experienced (in class, virtual, and international) teacher, Master's Degree in ESL/Bilingual. After most classes going virtual anyway, I'm considering setting up my own virtual classroom. So . . . was looking into Magic Ears, applied, and had an interview set up immediately. Oh my, it looked so clownish to me. I love to surprise and have fun with my students - - - but a steady diet of this type of "passion" would soon fall into the realm of entertainment rather than education. I can't imagine parents actually paying for this. All this aside, I'd appreciate some honest guidance into teaching for perhaps two companies. My schedule is very flexible.

I just signed my last contract but I’m probably not opening any slots unless my other company goes super slow. I too have found the classes extremely stressful. I’ve tried to rank up for the last year and unfortunately, they seem to find some tiny minute and barely noticeable issues each time I requested a feedback meeting. Each time was something new they never mentioned. I started to worry about every star rating and began to feel I adequate as a teacher. I know I’m a good teacher so to be made to feel less, just hasn’t been pleasant. The last message I received was as follows. ...” I can help you rank up if you open more slots...”. My response to that was “ I’ve been opening everything I can and that wasn’t enough? Sorry, I’ve taken on another company “

Helpful video! I got through the interview, trial demo, and got rejected after the 1v1. Originally, my success manager told me he loved my passion, and that there were not many things I needed to correct in order to pass. However, I was told upon rejection, that I did not pass because I did not have much voice variation, I kept pausing all the way through, etc. I found this odd because I literally felt like A CLOWN throughout the entire lesson, and smiled and talked the ENTIRE way through. To say the least, it was draining! Additionally, my interviewer would repeat words incorrectly over 5 times. I had to keep going at some point, but it got really annoying because there is only so many ways I can correct him to say a word (I'm assuming that's the reason they said I had little variation in voice).

Hi! Thanks for watching. So, I did an updated video recently about my perspective on Magic Ears. I still think it's worth applying, they are not a bad company, they just weren't for me. They are hiring and need teachers so it's an option and the pay is good. I teach a live class on Spitball each week and if you'd like to join, here is the link: www.spitball.co/course/1950

I’m sorry Magic Ears didn’t work for you, like you said it has worked for many and every company has it’s pros and cons. I am a Magic Ears teacher and know some teachers that say they left VIP kid because they like Magic Ears better, so I think it’s about preference. I do have to say Magic Ears does allow negative posts in the facebook page and I have seen them, so it’s not like you can’t speak up or voice your concerns in a respectful manner. Every time I have sent an e-mail to the company about a suggestion or concern, they have done a great job of answering my e-mails and I have seen some major updates in the policies since I started. For one you no longer have to report for every mishap in the classroom, you just report when there is improper wardrobe (naked child) or problem with the student’s camera, everything else you just mute/or block and you keep teaching. I also love that I get to move students around and overall classes go very quickly! Also the standby emails are mass emails, meaning they send it to everyone if they are in need of standby teachers, there is no obligation about answering them and are rarely directed to any one person, I have personally looked at the e-mails and if I can do them or want the extra income cool, if not, I just disregard them. You can also turn off notifications if they are too annoying, there is no penalty or the need to feel obliged to take them, it just assures that they keep the Very lenient cancellation policy going. Anyways like I said it’s not for everyone and at the end it’s about preference, personal experience, and perspective. Congratulations on your ongoing success with VIP Kid!

I love Magic Ears. People who just want a paycheck won’t like it because, yes, you have to have energy but that’s not too hard when you love what you do. I don’t feel like I’m a “clown on crack” like someone else said we had to be; I just enjoy the kids and have fun with them. Also, I’ve been with them for a year and a half, have taught 1,300 classes and have only received one parent complaint to my coach (I was using picture cards that had both Chinese and English, and I believe it confused the child so it was valid.) I also make more money with them than I would any other company. Also, if you know how to grab standbys your booking rate will be almost 100%.

Just a question. Does alot of companies pay per minute? For example, if the company pays $20 per hour and the class is booked for 55 minutes, equaling to $18.3 per hour. Is this the same with most companies or just some? Is this the same for magic ears? Im asking because i just switched companies and my previous company paid for the full hour even though it was onlybooked for 55 minutes. Sorry if this sound complicated.

Hi Timone, No I don't think so. The companies I work for and recommend pay by the class, 25 minutes and you get a base rate and to get the hourly rate you just multiple by 2 since you can teach 2 in 1 hour. Magic Ears is like this as is Gogokid and VIPkid and most of the others.

Hi Gordy! So, I got hired at $8.50 base pay/class. That is $17/hour. When I made this video I was getting the $2 bonus/class for completing the class and teaching 45 in a month. That comes to $21/hour. I also only teach short notice which is $2/class so that makes $25/hour. Now with the new bonus structure, I don't quite get $2/class for the bonuses so I average around $24/hour now....its really all because of short notice that I make that and I got hired at 8.50 three years ago.

@@onlineteacherdude1284 ...well, going by what I've checked on ME, seems they have got way more bad reviews than others. With that said, I'll give them a pass as you have too.

These people also require you to bring not one but TWO props to your classes. Now tell me how are you supposed to bring a prop for the moon????
@onlineteacherdude1284
@onlineteacherdude1284 4 жыл бұрын
Two is easy, most teachers use way more than 2! You don't have to have a prop for everything. A whiteboard and a puppet can be used across multiple classes, or you cut use cutouts, digital props. ManyCam is great for using digital props, or Googlie slides...lots of options. I am not prop heavy and I never found it difficult to have 2 props. Easy. Fruit from the fridge, etc....

@@onlineteacherdude1284 okay. That was helpful. I think I'll just print out most of my difficult props from the internet. Thanks :)

I'm the guy who slipped through the cracks and became a top level teacher at VIPKIDS without ever being clownish or bursting with enthusiasm. Took me forever to level up to 6 but I held every certification the offered, except Level 1, which I deliberately avoided. The comment on the many 5-apple reviews I got over and over again was "Teacher is very serious" "Good teacher, doesn't play games" and I almost lived on regulars. Magic ears keeps giving me feedback about my energy but the students keep giving me 5-star reviews. But it is exhausting vs VIPKID. And it's not your computer. Their app is glitchy and lacks a lot of very important features, like the ability to simultaneously be the teaching platform, feedback input channel and technical support. You also cannot change your setting when you are in a classroom so if you have a glitch that switches you from Manycam view to a different camera (my teaching space has three monitors, 4 different microphones and 3 cameras, you have to exit the classroom to re-set. I have to have the app, the home page and dingtalk all open at the same time with Magic ears. I also think that their oral feedback is very inferior to written feedback and I would appreciate some written feedback from parents if they are going to leave me poor reviews. Magic Ears feels very amateurish. There is also very little training before class. They just want your signature on the contract and you booked into class ASAP. I was terribly unprepared for my first classes and I hate feeling that I am doing a poor job at something that I know, from VIPKID, that I can do very well with training.

Great points Kelly! I totally agree. Thanks for your feedback and comment. I too live off regulars at VIPKid - they are my favorite for sure.

I taught 5 classes back to back and at the end, I could barely remember anything about them. Not a good way to give meaningful feedback.
