Hornbys class 37. Famous for being on a class 47 chassis with incorrect bogies. At Cardiff Canton diesel depot the lads there actually had a 37 on jacks, and lowered it onto a set of 47 bogies as a laugh and homage to this model! There is a picture in the book ‘Cardiff Canton Diesel Depot’.

Loved the 37s when I was a secondman on BR Stratford East London the sound of the engine as you opened up the controller just great, double heading a freightliner up Brentwood bank the noise bloody brilliant.

I can't beleive that some people just don't know even the VERY BASICS of how model trains work! It's a good job that we have people like yourself to help the poor things out! Good on you , keep up the good work. But don't let it get in the way of other things in your life!

hi there, i agree. i am amazed at what i see nowadays that basics are not known about loco motors, even though instruction sheets are provided., in my trade i find clowns do not know how to check engine oil levels in vehicles,

@@petersmith4455 errrm Even I could check the oil level in a cr engine. And I don't have a car! I could do the basic stuff as a kid to keep my model locos running! With the older models it's simple to do.

It’s not just model trains. It seems the more higher education qualifications people get the less they know about basics which actually in every day life are far more important than a BA on pigmy wall paintings! Some of my work colleagues were shocked when we were talking about bicycle maintenance that I serviced my own bike! First was, How did you learn? To which I replied I learned when I was a child from building bikes out of scrap parts from a scrap yard and the second was, “ahh, but is it safe, your not an expert!” I did not know how to answer that, I was flabbergasted! It seems common sense and the desire to figure things out are not important anymore!

Hi Bill ,, Yep what you said about the ware in the centre of the cogs is spot on. I had this happen myself around a week ago. I have fixed up around 20 or so ringfield motors and this one last week (a lima western gladiator) had me stumped. When i got it I put it on the track and barely moved so i pulled it apart and the motor was gunked up with congealed grease and other oily crap. Clean up & test it went great with a test forwards , backwards & all good. I put it all back together put it the test track but was loud and really growly and was shaking and jittery and even wobbled a bit and made some wierd clickingmnoises every now and then so took it all apart again and found the same. I slowly turned the top cogs that come off the motor & the cogs below it were jumping up a little bit the started to turn. So i looked at the centre of these cogs and noticed the excessive movement due to the ware in the centre where it sits on the chassis. Looks like like I'll have to have a dig through all the spares i have here to fix it. I also loved the double header running session and new camera angles there Bill especially the over head shot where it looked like drone footage. Anyhoo iv flapped me gums enough already and yes you are getting a good reputation around here in oz too as your vids are bloody awesome mate and very informative too so thankyou. It gives me great pleasure to get these old 40 yo trains going again and get to relive what they were made for. Fun admiration and enjoyment. Cheers from John in Australia

I have watched a few of your video's on repairing analogue engines, and I buy DCC engines that either don't run or require repairing. Recently I purchased a box of assorted engines and parts and in the box was a 0-4-0 shunter and a Lima class 59. You are welcome to have them as I have a digital layout and have no use for these. I did try to change the class 59 to digital but it does not run very well.

Lovely old job Bill! My good lady said to me the other day 'you haven't had anything from Hatton's this year',my reply was 'you are right that's because i keep bidding on used items on ebay'.The older models in my view are much better, give me a Ringfield or Lima pancake motor anyday over some of the modern rubbish they produce! A nice little running session at the end :)

@@oobill Contact Cleaner as in WD40 Contact Cleaner? What is the 'teacup' (probably got that spelt wrong lol) you reference? I recently purchased a pre-owned Hornby Class 37 that is pulling a lot of amps just to move so a service is need. Clearly not done from the reputable supplier who shall remain nameless as to be fair they just said it was a runner which technically it is. So attempting my first ever service of a loco (following your excellent videos of course.)

Yes WD40 contact cleaner. See FAQ in description. I use T-Cut on the commutator sorry then cleaned off with contact cleaner. T-Cut or any metal polish will do so long as you clean it off afterwards.

Hornby made this model?? Of a class 37 with those class 47 bogies that quite frankly was hideous? The laugh was the first version had the class 31 bogies? With a model of such an important class loco, why the heck just not make bogies? I seem to remember these are so light and to be honest I never liked them! Hornby never seemed able to produce a good diesel? They did put in a good effort with the class 25 though?
