Ookami Mio: A Strange Dog Food Tangent

Mio was playing Dorfromantik late at night, having a chill stream people could fall asleep to. Though as she played, she went on a strange tangent about eating dog food. A rather strange topic to sleep to. Expand for translators notes. 0:00 - Just as an explanation, there are a lot of cuts in the video because there are a lot of moments where it's just Mio playing the game quietly, reading people's reactions in chat. I cut out those portions to skip to where she's talking and stuff, so I apologize if any of the cuts seem awkward. The video would be closer to 9 minutes long if I didn't do this. 0:03 - For additional context, Mio was talking about how playing Dorfromantik gave her this feeling of "running along the plains." Then she talked about not having a lot of memories doing that, since she grew up in the mountainous countryside, which is what led to the talk about getting dog food from an old man when she went out on walks. 1:14 - A big thing to point out is that throughout this clip, Mio says "犬科", which is literally "canine" or "canidae." This is the only instance where I translate it as such. For the rest of the clip, if Mio doesn't specifically say "dog food" or "dog ears," you can assume she originally said "canine," but I chose to translate most of these into "dog" instead. The reason for that is because I feel that when people speak English, they rarely ever use the term "canine" or "canidae" outside of taxonomy discussions, and that when people want to describe anything "dog-like," they usually just call it a dog. Similarly, we don't usually call lions and tigers "felines," we usually call them cats, even though technically feline is probably more accurate. Like if you saw a Pokemon and weren't sure what it was, you'd probably ask if it was a cat or a dog, not a feline or canine. Essentially, I opted to keep Mio's dialogue feeling natural to an English speaker over being technically correct because I felt like her saying "You might actually be a canine!" sounds weird compared to "You might actually be a dog!" after talking about eating dog food. 2:17 - The original joke here is that Mio goes from saying 人生 (jinsei, which uses the kanji for "person" + "life" to refer to a person's life) to 犬生 (inusei, changing the kanji for person to the kanji for dog, but leaving the "life" kanji alone). 3:05 - I don't know if Mio is making a reference to the movie or not, but the question of whether or not someone who is a dog-human hybrid should go to the hospital reminds me of the scene from "Wolf Children" where the MC wonders if she should take her half-wolf half-human kids to the doctor or the vet or keep them a secret. 3:52 - If you aren't already aware, there was a stream where Subaru was wondering what the appeal of certain popular things in otaku culture were. One of the topics was "why do people like animal ears on people?" and a person in her chat said that "People with animal ears are great because they don't have human rights, so you can do whatever you want to them." Subaru read this comment out loud, and while they weren't actually her words, her chat teased her about reading such a comment out loud. To further drive the joke in, she had guests for that stream, and all of her guests were people with animal ears (Okayu, Mio, and Koyori), who all teased Subaru about the human rights thing. Because of that, the hololive community (or at least the JP one), basically has a running gag about whether or not characters with animal ears have human rights. The translation I chose here isn't as direct as it could be, but I altered it specifically so that you can understand what Mio is talking about even if you hadn't seen Subaru's verbal gaffe (and then if you ended up wondering why human rights were even a factor, you could find out here lol). Incidentally, the phrase 人権 (jinken, human rights) is also sometimes used as Japanese slang to refer to incredibly overpowered stuff in video games. Essentially, something could be so broken that without them, it feels like you don't even have something as basic as human rights.

i... hope she means like dog biscuits, which i could see being edible, but when i see "dog food" my mind immediately goes to wet food, which i definitely wouldnt wanna try. i'd much rather have those yogurt drops for rodents, those things are delicious.

Eating dog food....? The requirements for the MioFa sure are strange...... Jokes aside, I don't see myself ever even considering dog food unless Mio herself put it in front of me.

Can't say I've personally had the experience of eating dog food yet... Though I've eaten fish food before and while it didn't really have any flavor, it was surprisingly pretty good. Then again my Zodiac Sign is Pisces which here in Germany is Fische (fish, obviously) so I guess it's not that weird in a way...
