My favourite character from ALL of Media is Freya from Final Fantasy IX. She goes through so much shit. The love of her life leaves to "find himself", only to forget that she exists when they eventually meet again. Her Kingdom gets well and truly fingerblasted, and the survivors get fingerblasted when they believe they're safe. She genuinely suffers through most people's worst nightmares but she never plays the victim, and the writers never make her obnoxious like most professional victims are today. She never puts others down to elevate herself. She uses her experience to raise herself up and helps the rest of the party moving forward. This is how you write powerful characters who suffer. If they gave us reasons to sympathise with a character, who they are superficially doesn't matter. I don't love Freya as a character because I identify with her. I can't. She's a fucking Rat Person and I'm a Straight, Huwhite Male. The narrative these days is that people need to see every facet of themselves in a character to identify with them, but that's just not true. We gravitate towards characters who have fantastic writing, and Final Fantasy IX has some of the best character development in all of media, not because of their: labels, sexual orientation, victimhood, political leanings, or Theological opinions. I hope that we can get back to writing characters and not self inserts.

But that was actually a major part of who She-Hulk was. In the '90s cartoon, she got a blood transfusion from Bruce, and she got permanent superhuman strength but kept her mind. She was never as strong as The Hulk, but she had brains too. Now... the whole self loathing "Superheroes are narcissists, The Rich, and Orphans" thing? THAT isn't She-Hulk. She absolutely REVELED in going from a small meek lawyer to buff, sexy, AND still having her smarts.

I got hit with all this sexist neo-feminist bullshit from an early age, as my mother was a proud part of that cultural effort. An extremely extremely talented woman, and wasn't unloving towards me, but HOOOOLLY SHIT was it confusing growing up in an environment where to be at all aggressive or competitive or any other male traits a woman may not also experience or enjoy..... was viewed as being primitive and immoral. Years after I had left home for college, and actually started getting exposed more to male ideals and virtues?.....omg, everything about who I was, how I felt towards things, etc suddenly made so much more sense. All the self-loathing over parts of myself that led to constant conflict between myself and my mom and effeminate father?.....I suddenly realized, "oh, there is actually a way through life using these traits for good -in fact, they're not only NOT evil, they are and always have been NECESSARY to society functioning." My mother is an amazing woman and person, but her sexist one-sided views of men and what makes them good or bad?.....goddamn, made growing up as a young boy around those ideals and notions was hell. SO much internal confusion and self-loathing. Can't even imagine what it's like to have that sort of thing not only normalized at home but also completely saturating all the culture. Legitimately scary.

There's a real problem with the "fix it in post" mentality in current day movies. It breeds a form of laziness, not in the CGI work itself, but the fact that the directors and showrunners can just ignore tiny details, such as dirt on a face or other continuity problems, and just half-ass a quick fix on a computer instead of actually paying attention to what is going on in the scene.

Nothing has been done with the Hulk in over a decade. Even those rights should have lapsed long ago. Feige stated very clearly that the only reason a solo Hulk sequel was never made was that he didn’t view it as financially viable. Edit: I posted this before I got to Drinkers comment that pretty much states what I was also saying. Not trying to plagiarize: just editing this for the record. I think part of the reason those of us in The Lord of the Rings fandom are still ready to fight is not just because it hasn't fully been abused to hell and back just yet, but because we know it is done. Yeah, the hobbit movies were far, FAR from great, but they weren't the worst things to come out of Hollywood. Plus, a lot like the Star Wars prequels, they didn't ultimately change anything too crucial about the originals. Things could have gone worse with those films, and I don't think we will get that luck with Amazon. But, regarding the story being finished, again, the main quest is over, and our heroes' stories are basically all told. Yes, there are appendices, in the back of the Return of the King. Yes, the Silmarillion is the Genesis of Middle-Earth and all of its tales. But that's really it. Again, the main line story is DONE. There is no new ring to destroy, or Infinty Stone to collect: It. Is. Done. And this is a part of WHY it worked as a movie series. There was a clear goal, with a beginning, middle, and end. MARVEL, the Predator movies, Terminator, and all these other franchises are being forced to continue, well past there expiration date. Adding anymore to them is just like putting more seasonings to a roast that's already been burned, from being left in the cooker far too long. It's pointless, and ultimately pleases no one, or worse, just makes people more bitter and angry then if you had just accepted the loss and tried something new. I've posted this sentiment, or nearly identical comment on many videos, but The Lord of the Rings is the hill that I will die on. No studio can take away what we already received, but I cannot bare the thought of them adding to, and tarnishing - "improving" - something that was so great.

Yes, please. There are rumors of it coming back, with the show's continuity and one of the original head writers, and likely a bunch of cameos. Wouldnt that be nice... Universe was getting off its feet in the 2nd half of the 2nd season, when it got axed, too. That ep. when they brought back McKay and Langara (Jonas' world) was just a french kiss for longtime fans.

Disney would just have them go up against non existent female Samurai’s, like this silly Comanche princess? So utterly contrived and nonsensical, pitting a 90lb little girl with a bow and arrow against a 7ft 2 375lb alien with an array of high tech weaponry. Even without them, it would be a huge mismatch???

^I don't have an issue with a female native. Some tribes were matriarchal (although they still sent their men to fight), but superhuman acts by tiny female characters are way too much to stomach. Ice Pirates and Yellowbeard two movies my 3 younger brothers and I mention often over a shared bottle of Bourbon. One thing I did no know about Ice Pirates til after watching a great mini-doc about the making of the movie. Initially it started as a serious space epic but after watching the early cuts the writer/director and actors decided it was much better to take itself not so seriously and go a more comedic route. A very good decision as the movie is hilarious and would be so forgettable as a more serious film. Yellowbeard are a few python players which is more than enough for 30 years of inside jokes and quoting for my family. " Stagger , Stagger, get shot, crawl , crawl.. "

All these shows, all these remakes, reimagining, adjustments made for "modern times", all supposedly for the "global audience". And yet, the "global audience" they have in mind and cater to is western countries, primarily the US. They are so self-centered that the rest of the world does not matter to them. In fact, the world should just quietly adjust and blindly accept all these new, superior "western values" that are being pushed on them (same values that even the western population is rejecting). Because, of course, those that talk the loudest about valuing other cultures and about "decolonization", are the ones that will gladly stand on the vanguard of a new wave of conquest, to bring "civilization and enlightenment" to the world. Except this time, it's ideological conquest, through modern media. But that's ok, the rest of the world is just laughing at them. China already has Hollywood by the balls, others might join soon.

Your points on Disney not being able to write male characters with "edge", goes back to Jordan Peterson's line about being able to be a monster. The preverbal becoming one with the shadow a la Tool 46&2 and Carl Jung. In order to be strong capable people, the übermensch, you must confront and become one with the darkest parts of you. Then and only then can you be a hero. Disney's inability to write this is reflected in all their male protagonists in the modern era vis a vis Simba vs Boba Fett. One has to kill his uncle the other has his edge taken from him. This however creates a society in which people are able to determine for themselves their own needs and desires and are no longer dependent.

My prediction for the new Thor movie. - Thor is gonna be chastised so hard for being how big of a failure he is and how he is so unworthy of the throne because of being fat, in contrast with “Mighty Thor” which we be shown about how awesome she is. Because in Marvel, male’s grief is a laughing stock that should be ridiculed and condemned. - Nobody will ever bring up Valkyrie being a former slaver. - Thor and Star-Lord will be a gay couple, mainly to mock Chris Pratt (because Marvel had done it once in Star-Lord comics a few years ago by making Star-Lord gay or bi).

Thor wasnt a great movie or anything but I did kinda like it. It was kinda charming and even wholesome at times and they did the whole "fish out of water" thing really rather good. He felt really out of place but not like it was forced. It felt like how a person like Thor would actually behave in such circumstances. One of my favorite jokes in Marvel is in Thor where he walk into the pet store and in a very "I am the lord and you are my subjects" kinda way belows out "I NEED A HORSE"!" and the guy behind the counter goes: "Errr, we sell cats and parrots and stuff" and Thor replies with great authority, confidence and regal regal tone "Then give me one big enough to ride" The joke in itself is kinda so-so but the deliver is just fakking awsome. When he enters and demands a horse is just so falwless as to how I would imagine a pompous, douch who knows nothing about the place or situation hes in would act. It completely cracks me every time.

Like, they make all these bafffling decisions, and right after a movie of so many absolutely boss decisions, just to make the MCU seemingly uncontinuable in any coherent way, just saying "good luck fuckers" to all the writers and directors who will have to pick up from there... Maybe they saw where it was going and just wanted go show us that this is where anything decent cuts off.
