Oh my God, the searchers is one of the best movies of all time. And what a cast. I love the scene where Patrick Wayne as a young cavalry.Officer comes in to make a report toward bond. And John Wayne is standing a little distance away. And doing things the kind of torment the kid. Is the funniest scene and of course even funnier when you realize that of course they're father and son. That movie had great humor though it was often very sad. If we haven't seen the searchers you need to go find it. Fantastic and well made movie. When I think of it, I still see John Wayne standing in the doorway of that cabin After he's brought debbie home.

I definitely think Charley Waite qualifies as a marksman. All you have to do is to take a look at his shooting prowess during the gunfight at the end. This may be the best western ever. It just came out in a time when westerns are no longer popular. If this had been released in the 1960s it would have been unchallenged as the best. Though in the 60s the cinematography and acting would have been worse. These guys act like real men. Not overconfident good guy types you saw in the 60s westerns. I think it lacks a lot in complexity of characters. With Kostner its always the good vs. bad guy trope and Western movies offer so much more if you look at the time period! If you read up the history all the huge events like OK Corrall etc were more about beefing groups with shades of grey and no moral superiority. Stop the simple minded approach. Characters entrenched in reality and real motivations with all their ugliness. Thats what Kostner movies always lack despite his great acting ability and imo he just cant do it because he always needs that hero element for himself. This movie is more like a beautiful but artificial painting. Can also be a great Western I wont deny it but imo thats whats lacking in spades to make it as good as you see it..

I cant remember a time in movie producing that was this openly racist than nowadays. Its frustrating. They make race quotas for movies, quotas for sexual orientation, demand the devaluation of white male people just because of their skin colour and gender in movie scripts. As an actor you wont get booked anymore for a gay role if there is a gay actor for it. Brokeback Mountain wouldnt even be possible nowadays thats how far it got. They just changed the color we should see negative. Everything now is about colour of skin in a stalinistic forceful way. Much much worse than 30 years ago.
