When the marshal says, "We don't have to settle this here and now" it was great acting. There was a pause in the middle as he takes a gulp. He was catching his breath and his nerves. He's not as badass as he'd like folks to think. He was anxious and couldn't settle himself totally. GREAT acting.

Oh my God, the searchers is one of the best movies of all time. And what a cast. I love the scene where Patrick Wayne as a young cavalry.Officer comes in to make a report toward bond. And John Wayne is standing a little distance away. And doing things the kind of torment the kid. Is the funniest scene and of course even funnier when you realize that of course they're father and son. That movie had great humor though it was often very sad. If we haven't seen the searchers you need to go find it. Fantastic and well made movie. When I think of it, I still see John Wayne standing in the doorway of that cabin After he's brought debbie home.

Costner and Duval were sluggers not marksmen. They weren't quick drawing fools to death- they were knocking them out and then shooting out bar windows with a shotgun. Love the change in pace from most westerns.

I definitely think Charley Waite qualifies as a marksman. All you have to do is to take a look at his shooting prowess during the gunfight at the end. Besides that, he also had years of experience, having served in the American Civil War along with several years working as a hired gun for people like Denton Baxter.

The scene when they buried Mose and Tig, the whole damn movie, Gold! Well, he sure as hell wasn't one to complain. Woke with a smile, seemed like he could keep it there all day. Kind of a man that'd say 'good morning' and mean it, whether it was or not. Tell you the truth, Lord, if there was two gentler souls in this world, I never seen 'em. Seems like old Tig wouldn't even kill birds in the end. Well, you got yourself a good man and a good dog, and I'm inclined to agree with Boss here about holding a grudge against you for it. Crispin Julius, Boss gave him a chance. Same chance every man deserves. Charley was a killer and he wanted to change his ways but some ways never change. Like Bobby in Broken Trail with Thomas Haden Church. They were partners and there was some god awful ciolence but it wasn’t gratuitous. It’s about men standing up for what’s right.

This may be the best western ever. It just came out in a time when westerns are no longer popular. If this had been released in the 1960s it would have been unchallenged as the best. Though in the 60s the cinematography and acting would have been worse. These guys act like real men. Not overconfident good guy types you saw in the 60s westerns. These guys were dangerous confident and scared all at the same time.

I think it lacks a lot in complexity of characters. With Kostner its always the good vs. bad guy trope and Western movies offer so much more if you look at the time period! If you read up the history all the huge events like OK Corrall etc were more about beefing groups with shades of grey and no moral superiority. Stop the simple minded approach. Characters entrenched in reality and real motivations with all their ugliness. Thats what Kostner movies always lack despite his great acting ability and imo he just cant do it because he always needs that hero element for himself. This movie is more like a beautiful but artificial painting. Can also be a great Western I wont deny it but imo thats whats lacking in spades to make it as good as you see it..

I cant remember a time in movie producing that was this openly racist than nowadays. Its frustrating. They make race quotas for movies, quotas for sexual orientation, demand the devaluation of white male people just because of their skin colour and gender in movie scripts. As an actor you wont get booked anymore for a gay role if there is a gay actor for it. Brokeback Mountain wouldnt even be possible nowadays thats how far it got. They just changed the color we should see negative. Everything now is about colour of skin in a stalinistic forceful way. Much much worse than 30 years ago.

When Wade grabbed his pistol you could see the Marshall realized he wasn’t dealing with a tin horn with a gun for show; he realized ChRlie Wade is a bonafide gun slinger.
