Someone somewhere else said it before: the way the internet was up until the early 2010s was lighting in a bottle that we might never go back to. I hate so much how the internet went from being an escape from reality (culture of absolute irreverence, actually sincere interaction with insults and everything, almost no corporate meddling) to the exact opposite: everything everyone hates about the real world on steroids. Also, I have a special grudge against the woke for the current state of arrested development of the video game industry. Video games are my absolute favorite medium, and in the 2010s I believed (though without much to back it up other than the pattern by which technology and game design was evolving) that we were in a sort of transitioning state where video games would become so massive that by the 2020s, open world games would have whole ass old-school JRPG style world maps but with each town being roughly the size of an Assassin's Creed map. Was my idea too ridiculous and unreasonable? Probably, but it really felt like we were going somewhere like that; one game that especially inspired that idea in me was AC Black Flag. In the actual 2020s, we only have the same design conventions as we had in the early 2010s, but jankier and/or with worse execution, not to mention, lots of hand-holding (and whole squads of terminally online shills who'll swarm you if ever dare criticize the ridiculous decision to have yellow paint everywhere, when back in the early 2010s we all agreed we were over that). It's just a dark age for gaming and geek culture, among many other things.

You get praise from me for liking Dark Souls 3. Some purists will say it's not as good as the original, but on its own, DS3 holds up incredibly well. The lore, ambient sounds, the fantasy is all top notch.

I also hate how cartoonish and ugly games have been too. So I made one that's violent and that’s not afraid of being escapism like a video game should be. I thought we knew better when spec ops the line was telling us that video games should be fun as opposed to whatever they’ve allowed themselves to become these days. Needless to say it’s hilariously jarring when they’ll regress to anime and bug CRT tvs, but the second anyone mentions the Xbox 360, they get called every ist and ism in the book like Wayne’s world. So naturally if I get told not to make something like a 2010s styled Xbox 360 by anime people, I’m going to do that and do it gladly because anime is cancer.

@ Games from the 2000s are still fun. I noticed the shift around 2012 - 2014 when games started to become all cinematic heavy, focusing less on gameplay and more on attracting a mainstream audience. Gaming in 2024 is a joke. Same core mechanics as stuff in the early 2010’s, but worse.

This is what I call the woke inclusion funnel. The more people they ostracize, the more they shrink. We can beat this. We just gotta take back everything they've taken from us. In the case of open source, I think the Redot team handled it the best. Fork the project, and take the crowd away from Godot. We need to do this with every project, including the Linux kernel.

@@NuchiAsaki I used an open source video downloader for years. Then noticed that certain features were being taken away. Then I checked Reddit and saw what looked to be two smug females who were mods on that sub Reddit for that open source program. Someone chimed in and said their program was getting worse. Both of the mods displayed a smarmy attitude. It was then that I decided to uninstall the program.

We lost control of our hardware in 2008 with that whole "management engine". We lost control of our embedded software when Android went A/B. We lost control of our data when we let the government spy on us because of an inside job. The fight was lost decades ago. Just prepare for the inevitable by backing up everything you can. I use Mint right now but that will change when they also go the way of all other Open Source Freeware projects. Small scale local networks, using LoRa or UART. Disable root login, require certificates instead of passwords, change ssh from port 22 to something else.

I don't use BFS or BTRFS or whatever it is either. I've been fine with EXT for decades and while I didn't care as much for using ext3 and stuck with ext2 for probably too long, I've fully embraced ext4. However, that said, I agree that it is absolutely stupid for them to kick out an FS developer like that. I also would say never apologize for hurting someone's feelings, only for being wrong, and I've not been wrong too often when it comes to technical issues, though I've eviscerated a lot of people's feelings. If you've seen any of my rants on Wayland versus X11, you'll understand quite well that I've been seeing this coming for a decade and wholeheartedly agree with you. I think the Wayland devs are filthy name-squatters and they're intentionally killing X11 with zero chance of resurrection. The usual advice of forking it really won't work because it would be a niche bunch that would want such a system, even if it works better. Largely that's because of corporate backing, which is a key component to the destruction of open source. That episode of Stargate: Atlantis comes to mind, Season 4, Episode 17: Midway, where they're on a space station and they can't access any of the station's systems because the Wraith have done something to them and Kavanagh does the one thing they were all avoiding because they knew it would be booby-trapped and it starts the self destruct countdown. McKay reports to Sheppard what the situation is and says "We never should have woke up Kavanagh". McKay is the open source community and Kavanagh is corporate influence. Only we had a much longer timer.

The Kent Overstreet situation is especially disgusting. On one side, in his fights with Linus, IMO, he's totally wrong. Extremely arrogant and INSISTING in being wrong. And also off topic. And even his own reasons are non-sensical (this fs is super-dooper good and stable. Oh, it also needs this 100k line patch NOW or else children will die) However, his temporary ban for the stated reasons is so f***ing BS. He had a mild fight with a guy to which he solved the issue (including apologizing IIRC) in private. In a normal world everybody will focus on the next thing to do, preferably productive. But, no, the stupid CoC comitee or whatever they're called saw blood in the water and just HAD to come with off-the-charts demands and off-the-charts reactions. Well, not totally off-the-charts, they certainly can go much worse, as was seen in other cases, in other projects.

The reason I used open source was because I got tired of companies like Adobe and Microsoft constantly changing things around. It’s why the “nerds” moved to Linux because Windows decided to stop caring about the dedicated user. Unfortunately I’m still using a Windows 10 because of work. But at least it’s not as bad as 11.

@nattsurfarenАй бұрын
Thanks for sparking this discussion. Sure it's true there are some governance issues in the open-source community, but these don't define the whole scene. We shouldn't worry because open source is all about the freedom to innovate and collaborate. If a project starts straying, anyone in the community can fork it, creating a new direction that stays true to open-source values. This flexibility is why open source remains strong and adaptive.
@JodyBruchonАй бұрын
It's easy to tout the merits of open source and say that it will all be okay because of the nature of open source. It's not that simple. Forking and maintaining a new Linux kernel is not a simple task, for example. Things have to get really bad before that will ever happen; meanwhile, the door is now open for kernel decisions to be made based on some whiny trigger-happy enforcer's feelings rather than technical merits. Think of it as a denial of service attack: security patches could be stopped simply by fighting with the developer and triggering them publicly, causing a temporary ban.
@nattsurfarenАй бұрын
@@JodyBruchon I see your point, and it does sound frustrating. Since open source projects like Linux often don’t have the same financial backing as something like Windows, it could perhaps lead to a more 'wild west' atmosphere where rules and decisions can become more personal rather than purely technical. That decentralization has its perks in freedom and innovation, but it seems to also bring its share of challenges, especially when there’s no paycheck to keep things in line. I don't know, what do you think?
@JodyBruchonАй бұрын
@nattsurfaren the worst enemy of a better solution is an existing solution that is good enough. The only reason that people forked Godot is that they started booting out tons of people quickly, causing a major shock. Linux is being "frog boiled" which makes the rot slower, but also mostly invisible. The people behind it love to say "we enforce this so people aren't excluded because they're afraid to contribute" but no one talks about the massive chilling effect that the enforcement has. I'd argue far more people pass on contribution based on the 'code of conduct" and ideological enforcement than pass based on a person or two being rude.
@anon_y_mousseАй бұрын
@@JodyBruchon All of that, and the issue I brought up in my post if it's still there in 10 minutes. Name recognition, or the lack thereof, can kill a project. If you're working on your own and don't care about any of that and have all the spare time to devote to the software, then it really doesn't matter and eventually things may correct themselves, but most people don't have that ability and it will kill a project. All of those Godot forks you're referring to, they're mostly dead in the water because almost no one who has made one has the skills to actually maintain the project, by themself or otherwise. It really is a cancerous rot.
