The brine shrimp ecosphere is now 10 months old and also dead. So I open it up, smell it, and look at it through the microscope. We saw some microbes including vorticella!
Enjoy!

The lack of smell is caused by a lack of lipids/proteins being broken down in the water, meaning that the organisms in the container assimilated what little biological matter there was and it is the same matter being circulated among stable populations. In short, there is not enough excess biological matter to produce the waste necessary for funky smells. The salty "ocean" smell is actually the smell of bi-products made by phytoplankton, so that the lack thereof is probably the reason you can't smell the sea. It's, overall, caused by the same thing I stated above. Think of it like a dead animal in a pond. It'll be stinky as it decays, but eventually it will have been assimilated by the organisms of the pond and no more excess biological material will be available to produce odors.

Those black rods might be a type of cyanobacteria, perhaps anacystis. Cyanobacteria can arise in algae environments and produces extremely toxic cyanotoxins. -Edit: That sticker looks like it's covered in cyanobacteria (aka black algae--even though it isn't at all an algae).- *Edit again: @chuckcrunch1 suggested it might be mold and those dots/rods look exactly like **_Stachybotrys_** (aka black mold). I have a few ideas about how you could change things if you wanted to. First off I think you should look into "focus stacking," a process where you take a series of photos slowly changing the focus and then you photoshop all the parts of the picture that are in focus together! This creates amazingly sharp pictures that are otherwise impossible to capture. Because it takes 5-15 pictures for each focus stacked image it is hard to make stuff with them but if you find something still that you think is beautiful, you can take a series of focus stacked images and stitch them together into a short video 10 focus stacked images with the slide moving 1 mm to the side between each stacked photo (150 total photos, slide moved every 15) then you could show the beauty of it. Another thing you might want to get is a few sets of polarized lenses, sometimes you can see through the water with them at the right angle and I think that if you took pictures as you spun the polarized lenses around you could also edit it into a video clip. Changing the number of polarized lenses that the light has to pass through before hitting the camera and changing the angles they are all at can change the color that different organisms show up as. You might be able to make the light shining through some creatures sparkle and go from blue to orange to red to black to white and back again. I think playing with polarized light and polarized lenses will allow you to highlight parts of creatures that you otherwise couldn't, and can add color to an otherwise black and white image. My next suggestion is about how to get names for the creatures. If you don't know the names of whatever is swimming around in your slides then say what ever info you can about it. is the water salty or not, where you collected the water from, how big they are, what they eat, and anything else that might be helpful to identify them. Then say that you will pin the comments with what you think are the best guesses of what it is. You can use the pins and heart functions to keep those comments near the top and create your own comment you keep at the top of the section with credited guides. like if I comment: 4:15 eggs of mysteridae unknopsis contributed by JohnnyBoy123 8:08 fictus nomine algae contributed by by Katykit96 8:08 fictus Bestia algae contributed by DoggyDude69 Ect. And for things where there are 2 different guesses for the same thing you can look into them and see if there is any way to tell them apart, if one has an extra pair of legs, or if you can find it under the slides again you might be able to make a final judgement call and maybe none of the guesses were right. But If you basically turn it into name the mystery creature then you can learn and use the guesses for your next video on it. Another thing is being able to see into the jars. I know you often want to close the jar's lids and keep them closed as long as things inside are still alive. The jars often get a thick layer of algae on the surface of the jar making it hard to look into them to see anything living inside there. One solution to this is to get some strong neodymium magnets and sew one into a bit of sponge and toss it into the jar when you first make it. When you want to take a video of inside the jar you use the magnet to clear a tiny little window to see into the jar through. If you really wanted you could clean the entire inside of the the jar with the magnetic sponge for what ever reason. Being able to see into the jars with such clarity should allow you to get better video clips and it should help you identify organisms that you find in it. I also thought that one cool thing you could do would be to get a bucket of water from a local stream or something and then put it into 4 different jars, one you keep in the dark, another you put on the window sill, a third you put under 24 hour light, and the fourth jar you can put under a black light that runs for 12 hours a day or something like that. Use the same water and everything in all 4 jars and just keep them in different conditions and see how they are effected differently. You could also do the same experiment but with other variables but I think that the format of 4 jars with the same starting stuff put in 4 different conditions. Lastly, I think you should try to create a naturally balanced aquarium with some fish some shrimp, some brine shrimp, snails and slugs, ect! Get as many plants and animals in the aquarium as you can. Add things and take others out as you need to balance out the tank. You might need a filter and an air stone but I think seeing you set up a 10-30 gallon tank and fill it with tons of little creatures in hopes to one day get it to be mostly self sufficient

We're currently in lockdown for COVID-19 here in California, but we're able to go out and about a bit. We got some runoff water from the local hills and sealed it up. I noticed some life the next day, which turned out to be mosquito larva that subsequently hatched. Waiting to see what else will happen. Keep up the good work.

Invertebrates are particularly weak to metals like copper. Iron is a necessary trace element in any planted aquatic environment, but basically any amount higher than a few ppm of copper or metals including copper can kill off all your invertebrates. Copper is a necessity to invertebrates and, as a result, their systems are extremely efficient at absorbing copper from their freshwater environment, which usually has extremely low amounts of naturally occurring copper. When put in aquariums with foreign metal objects or tanks filled with water from old copper pipes, these can cause harm to invertebrates because they end up essentially overdosing themselves with copper and becoming toxic.

I recently found your website and I'm totally new to the concept of closed ecosphere's or ecosystems. I've also noticed that there is very limited stuff on the internet that pertains to this little Hobby. You should consider writing a book on the subject everything from building it to even reference of the different species or even species based on different places. perhaps something geared more towards children or adolescents from grade school into High School. You seem to have quite a bit of knowledge on many of the species in your ecosystem. I can see this becoming a hit in science classes. I'm 42 years old and I never imagined that these ecosystems could be so enjoyable. Just thought I'd give you a food for thought. Blessed Be.

No shame, it's fun that we're all learning together. Everyone usually just wants to give the answers because they're so clever (I think I'm not so different), but I think what's more important than knowing is the journey to discovering. That's powerful. The acquisition of knowledge. I'm really loving the microscope shots and your skills with it are getting better...maybe just make sure your phone is anchored better LOL! Funny as usual.

I love the new haircut... kinda gives me a Robbie Rotten vibe 👌 Also how are the isopods doing? I've just recently got some dairy cow morph Porcellio Laevis and I was thinking that if you got a morph of whatever species you have, you could do some cool breeding videos and see what different colours you get. It'd be a nice experiment in basic genetics.

Also the organism at 6:25 is a Vorticella! EDIT: actually I don't think what you had were algae at all. It looks like old colonies of Vorticellae with another biofilm below.

Good morning, I think the lockdown in the UK is getting to me. I just stumbled on your channel via atomic shrimps channel and have just spent a very enjoyable 2/3 hours watching and learning about eco spheres. I am definitely going to do this with sea and freshwater. It's going to be a tough sell as my better half has finally got her new white minimalist kitchen😂. I need to do something to replace my golf. Small technical question do you actually push the seaweed/plants into the sediment or do they just sort themselves out. Thanks again

Hello! I've been following your content for a while, and today, I finally decided to make a closed ecosphere of my own. However, I am a bit worried I didn't get enough plants in. I know for a fact I collected some algae that had grown (from a lake) but I can't find it. It might've been buried in the soil! I'm already seeing some small creatures (bugs, worms, etc.) but I do have to wonder if they'll be okay without any plants in there currently? Also, I'm using an artificial "plant light" to provide them with light. Is this sufficient? Thanks.

8:27 I know this may sound stupid but those things have a very similar shape to the examples of bacteria we always see in science classes and pictures. I don't know much about this but is it possible it is bacteria?
