This OpenTx Tutorial shows how setup dual rates on OpenTx radios. The example shows the process on a Radiomaster TX16s but will work on any OpenTx radio.

If you spend some time tooling around in Companion, it will help you get familiar with how OpenTx works. The mouse makes it easy to navigate, the interface presents a full screen of options so you can see everything in a glance. If you can learn to move around in Companion, you will easily be able to navigate the radio at the field. Same concept as a flight simulator. Play with the sim at home, and when you get to the field, life is easier.

Great tutorial and I thank you for it! May I suggest that you find a way to enlarge your mouse cursor so that it is easier to follow your movements and go a little bit slower when you are selecting things as well. And may I suggest as well that when you are showing which switches to select such as "the anything but" switch for example, please take a moment to describe the switch icon appearance for those of us that are not as knowledgeable about OpenTX as you are. Please don't take those suggestions as criticism of your teaching talents. I sincerely thank you for your most helpful and educational videos. 👍👍

I have made changes to the desktop video practices including setting the mouse to be massive, but the screen recording software apparently doesn't see that. The current setting does highlight the mouse when I click with a red ring. I'll try to keep icon descriptions in mind, but I hope you understand if I covered every last little detail of programming these radios I would lose a lot of viewers. I appreciate your point but at some point I have to take it on faith that you can look some things up.

Great Video, thank you for always providing such amazing tutorials! I have been adding D/R and Expo directly into the tx with each model I add. If I try your method of entering D/R and Expo through Companion will it automatically assign the D/R and Expo to each model I add, if so that would save me a lot of work when entering a new model? Thank you
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do is create a template and use that for all your models. So I do a basic setup with my rates, audible clues, throttle lock, gain for stabilizers, mode switch for stabilizers, trims to zero, subtrims to zero, etc....With all the basics set, when I'm ready for a new model, I select my template, then click copy, and start applying the differences from my new model and the template. Basically a bind, rate/expo adjustments, control surface changes (dual ailerons, flaps, gear, etc) and I'm done very quickly with the initial radio setup.

Question, when you have two aileron and two elevator channels they will only be reflected in the Mix? Elevator 1 and Elevator 2 will be +100 & -100 respectively. Is this correct?
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 жыл бұрын
"When you have two aileron and two elevator channelsthey will only be reflected in the Mix?" I don't really understand this question. You can put Aileron1 and 2, and Elevator 1 and 2 in the Mixer, and/or Inputs. The Mixer is what specifies the channel. The Mixer can use physical controls like the stick itself or an Input definition. The Input definition can include one aileron or two, and one elevator or two. "Elevator 1 and Elevator 2 will be +100 & -100 respectively." All control surfaces have a range of -100 to +100 with 0 as center.

Anything I do in Companion can be done on the radio directly. I use Companion for videos for a couple of reasons: 1) It's much easier to navigate and use as a demonstration/teaching tool. You have to imagine how much editing I would do for every scroll click nav press click bang on the radio for these setups. It would be annoying to viewers, and would take me a lot of time to remove all the nonsense in edit. 2) I think Companion is one of the best features of these radios, so by putting it out there and using it, I'm trying to demystify it for people who aren't familiar with it. 3) I've only been using OTX for about 7 years now and I much prefer building configurations in Companion and pushing to the radio. It's far far easier and it saves wear and tear on the buttons/knobs/wheels. 4) Configuring on Companion is absolutely *ridiculously* faster than configuring on the radio. I can add labels (text), navigate drop downs, move to different menus and test things so much faster in Companion it's not even a contest. Using Companion makes me like FLASH when I'm setting up a model. Of course, the beauty of all this is that you have choices. If you don't want to use Companion, you certainly don't have to. Just apply whatever it is I'm saying about Companion to your radio. Companion is a mirror app to the radio, so if I say go to the inputs tab, you can do the same on the radio.

Sure thing. You'll find like everybody else that switches to OpenTx there are many many paths up the hill. Some paths are better than others, but you'll eventually get to the top. I can offer this help for Navigation: Think of OpenTx on these touch screen models as having two major trunks: 1) System 2) Model Each trunk as main menu items. Once you learn the main menu items that fit under each trunk, moving around will become much easier. The system trunk has system related options like sd card contents, radio setup, global functions, etc... The model trunk has model specific functions like the general model settings, inputs, mixes, outputs, curves, logical switches, special functions, telemetry. Just keep that in mind and ask yourself: "Am I trying to do something to the radio or am I trying to do something to a model" When you answer that, it gets you in the right ballpark.

One thing that killed me was when I was setting rates on the inputs - I wasn't setting a switch for the first line (default rate 100%), I was only setting switches for the 2nd and third lines of a 3 line rate setting eg. 100/80/70. So rates wouldn't change as I flipped my assigned switches, they would always be 100%... If I don't set a switch for the 3rd line (rate) (70%) , the rates all work as if all 3 lines(rates) had switches assigned. If I don't set a switch for the middle line (rate) (80%) , the rates default to either 80% or 100% , if I don't set a switch for the default rate you always get 100% regardless of how the rest of your rates /switch assignments are set.

@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 2 жыл бұрын
At 6:09 it shows !SBup, not SBup. There is a big difference. This is what I refer to as defensive programming. Since I use a 3 position switch I want to make sure either high or low rates are ALWAYS selected. So I use SBup for high, and ANYTHING BUT SBup for low. So that means if I stop in SB middle I don't turn off the control surface. This is all explained in the video starting at 6:00.

I saw it. Looks sketchy. I'd let others be the guinea pigs on this one.

I'm puzzled.... I've got a brand new Radiomaster TX16S, and OpenTX Companion 2.3. I was able to successfully set up a three position, dual rate switch.... but in my Companion, I cannot find the pop-up window that you show that starts with "Lines", and has some other items listed. If I right click on a line in the Mixer display, I can access the "Duplicate" item.... but the new line that is created has a tiny plus and minus symbol at the beginning of the line... which your lines don't show. Am I missing something? Do I have a slightly different version of Companion? Thanks for a great series of videos. As a guy who started in R/C with 10 channel reed radios back in 1962, I am learning a LOT!

I only see a lines item in the inputs tab, not in the mixer tab. Sounds to me like you're operating in the mixer tab where I'm operating on inputs.

@@RCVideoReviews Yes.... that was the problem. But now that I think about it, (and having successfully programmed a 3 position Dual Rate within the Mixer tab), doesn't it make more sense to set up Dual Rates in the Mixer... to accommodate things like V-tails, etc. that are mixed to be able to function? And while I am asking "noobie" questions, am I correct that you are recommending setting up the basic controls in Inputs with "Ch1:Aileron" .... rather than just the "Aileron" option?

@@tcgliderguy1 No. Dual rates belong in Inputs. If you put rates in mixers then you need to duplicate every mix. That's not the right way to do things. The flow of information is INPUT -> MIX -> OUTPUT. Use mixes to assign inputs to channels and mix controls. Use inputs to apply rates. You can do it other ways, but I promise, rates in inputs is the correct approach. No, Inputs should use the raw source. Not CHx:yyyy CHx:yyy is an output, unless you're sure you know what you're doing I don't think you want to create loops like that. Inputs use raw source.
