Hey Jules, I love your reaction and you are certainly not the first person to be shocked by the transition into the chorus. I've been a musician since I was a young child and I've played in multiple bands in several genres over the decades, but I also was not into metal music with scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer near the end of 2021. I immediately loved them because of their sophisticated songwriting, fantastic musicianship and the vocals of Tatiana, with her incredible ability to instantly transition back and forth from her beautiful clean singing voice to some of the best harsh vocals I've heard, female or male. She taught herself how to do the harsh vocals, but according to several reputable KZbin vocal coaches, she uses proper technique with use of her false vocal cords, preventing damage to her true vocal cords (Elizabeth Zharoff from The Charismatic Voice channel did a great long interview with Tatiana about a year and a half ago that's available on her channel). I'd also recommend checking out the "live from Wacken 2019" video for their song Perennial (which really shows Tatiana's ability in a concert setting), the official video for Wallflower (the first half of the song has a very cool "jazz-like" groove which gradually builds up to a big finish and the video is awesome) and Tatiana's "live one-take vocal performance" video of their song Judgement and Punishment (the music has a mix of reggae and metal sections and Tatiana's vocals are fantastic).

Hi, I am glad you want to know more about it. Also, for what it is worth Tatiana is growl singing not doing screamo. A very basic way to start is do warm ups first, very important. Then growl gently like a dog. Gradually do it stronger to be loude enough so that others will be able to hear you if you did it instead of talking. Then talk while doing it. Do not push yourself too much, or you can cause damage. Your vocal chords should never hurt or feel stressed. As when doing a performance at full volume with no mic's you should not push yourself into pain or uncomfortable sensations. Like when doing any new physical workout you will need to have a recovery time after before you do it again to avoid any unpleasantness.
@kirdot2011

im pretty sure that she changes her growl voice to soft singing voice the same way you change you opera voice to normal talking voice and for most people operatic voice is just as surprising technique-vise as Tatiana`s growl voice.

Aloha MC, so I've watched my fair share of reactions to Pisces and there are several that are very astute vocal coaches that seem to know what they're talking about when comes to growling/screamo whatevers: Elizabeth Zharoff and her channel The Charismatic Voice...she does a very good analysis of what and how Tatiana does what she does. Tara Simon Studios also has great input. And The Fairy Voice Mother is another reactionist that makes great analysis of Tati's vocal prowess!! There are many others, but just search YT for these three and I believe you will better understand the vocal qualities of Tatiana Shmayluk. Cheers! #JINJER

it's called "growling"...as I understand it, she's bypassing her vocal chords, and using the diaphragm and esophagus, and "false vocal chords; therefore, no damage to their voice.....she's 5 feet, and 100 pounds of pure power....to see more growler with a great "clean" voice, check out "Handshake With Hell" by Arch Enemy, with Alyssa Whire-Gluz

I believe that this technique, though Tati did not develop this with formal training, is similar to the super low base type singing done by bassists such as Tim, Avi, and Geoff (and others). I think this, the low base, and things like Mongolian throat singing, have many similarities. More false fold than true vocal folds (or else the switch back and forth would be impossible).
@nespith
@nespith Жыл бұрын
For actually trying to do these vocals safely basically you want to breath out as if you were trying to warm up your hands by making your breath hot and then start pushing it it a little so it makes kind of a cave noise and then play around with your mouth shape making kind of a puckering kissy face. When your comfortable with that really start to push it hard and you will get a deep growl.

Is it really her voice, though, in the growls? It does not come from the vocal cords. It is a vibration of the throat sides away from the vocal cords. Is it enough that the growls are being shaped by the mouth into words? I have heard people who can make understandable words using the sounds of an extended burp - I think I can also question whether that should be called 'vocal.' Or does voice include all oral sounds, and 'vocal cords' is just a common but not exclusive part of that?

The best overview of what she's doing IMO is The Fairy Voice Mother's reaction to Pisces after she spits up her tea in surprise. A very actionable toutorial on the technique is when ahe reacts to Electric Callboy's song Hypa Hypa with a friend and gives her friend a quick tutorial. Perennial live at Wacken is usually the next step to see Jinjer do their thing on stage, and with faster switching too. On The Top live in Kiev (now Kyiv) has a lot of great belting too. The one-take vocal video for Judgement & Punishment is great too. The most vocal tricks in a single performance is Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne but that's one of their harder songs. Subbed. Cheers!

They are from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where the fighting started in 2014. Tatiana is mostly self taught. Some of her influences are Gwen Stefani for the clean vocals, and for the harsh, Otep and Randy Blythe (Lamb of God). This is an older song, redone in this live session to showcase Vlad on drums, who had joined not long before this. But it went viral because of her vocals. He is classically trained on piano and self taught on drums. He ,Roman (guitar), and Eugene (bass) are all awesome musicians. The guys write the music, and Tatiana writes most of the lyrics. The song is referencing the astrological sign ,Pisces. Tati is a Pisces, she wrote the lyrics with a little help from Eugene(also a Pisces). When the current fighting started, the guys were stuck in Kiev, but were allowed to leave last summer to tour and be ambassadors for Ukraine. The usual next step for this band is to see her do it live with either Perennial live at Wacken 2019. Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev is good too.

Also, the Fairy Voice Mother reacts to this and explains what Tatiana is doing with her vocal track to accomplish this. Tatiana is self taught. Her Tea Time Interview with The Charismatic Voice is a good one to watch. Jinjer is from eastern Ukraine but had to relocate to western Ukraine after the violence broke out in 2013. What Putin's invasion in 2022 is doing to their country is deepening the wound. They speak to this in their song Home Back.

Every Jinger song is different. Tatiana is captivating and her vocal translations are seamless. Its mindboggling. She worked extremely hard to find a healthy way to achieve the harsh vocals /grawls. Part of that involves the false vocal cords. Jinger is awesome. They use that mix of beautiful clean vocals and harsh vocals/grawls to tell a story. The harsh vocals have a purpose such as emotional context beyond shock value. I really recommend Teacher Teacher official video, Perennial live at Wacken and Judgement and Punishment Tatiana's one take vocal performance version. I suggest pulling up lyrics to read through just before each Jinger song. Thier music is even better once you understand the meaning behind the lyrics.

Just an fyi, screamo is its own separate genre which is pretty different then what these guys are doing. In the metal world the 'demon voice' is usually just called harsh vocals or more specifically growling. Sometimes the singing stuff is referred to as clean vocals to differentiate it from the harsh vocals. Anyway loved the video! You should check out System of a Down for another metal band with interesting vocals.

Nice reaction :) The growling is a false vocal fold technique, there's tons of videos if you want to learn how to do it. Also screamo is a very specific genre that is not related to metal really, it's like a mix of emo and hardcore punk music. Jinjer is considered "progressive metalcore".

Jinjer - IMHO, all technically high-class players, with an outstanding vocalist. She's very expressive. Jinjer is progressive, melodic and extreme. I'd say prog melodeath but lots of people say they are metalcore. YMMV. If you want to see a bit more variation in Tatiana's vocals, try "Teacher, Teacher" (OMV), or for something gentler "Wallflower" OMV. The beast-mode growl is done with the false vocal folds above the vocal cords - it's how lions roar, for example. If done properly, the vocal cords are isolated and remain undamaged, from info picked up by watching vocal coaches reacting to Jinjer. [PS This is not "screamo" - very different genre. You can call it "screaming" though.]

Yay! Another Jinjer Pisces reaction that I hadn't seen :) Me and a few others make a hobby of watching reactions to this song :) A few tidbits I've learned about Tatiana and the band: "Heavy Vocals" a.k.a. the growl utilises a different part of the throat - the part that we use to make a heave sound. It took Tatiana 12 years to train her growl this way. But this is how she can switch cleanly between the two styles. Another bit of info: This video was made to highlight their new drummer, who has had no formal training in drums - he is a classically trained pianist who taught himself so he could play in Jinjer. A great one to prove she's actually making that noise is Perennial Live at Wacken. Welcome to Jinjer!

Hi there Jules!!! This is my first time visiting your channel. I have a heads up for you. Once the drummer switches to rim-shots -- business is about to pick up!! You'll see & hear!! Tatiana is one heck of a vocalist!! In my head and opinion this group is the best thing to ever come out of the former U.S.S.R. They are from Ukraine. There is a KZbin video of her putting her stage makeup on. I watched it so I could hear her speak. She taught herself how to do this!! Some call her the Queen of Scream!! Thanks

If you're interested in exploring the world of people who are both fantastic singers while also having a rough edge, I HIGHLY recommend Devin Townsend's EMG TV video "Kingdom" or his live performance of "Deadhead" at Royal Albert Hall. This is a whole rabbit hole and metal/rock vocalists have some amazing range and power even in their screams. A rougher side of metal would be something like Slaughter To Prevail's Demolisher. I dunno if you're ready for Lorna Shore yet :)

🦁 I can growl, basically self-taught via YT videos, and inspired by Tatiana here who is 100% completely self-taught! It's hard to teach in comments, but one main thing is, while it's HER voice, it's not her VOICE! It's the folds of throat above the larynx. Think of the tr-r-rill of the tongue in Spanish, or the tired horse noise with your lips. It's similar to those, but rattles in your throat. It will naturally invade your heavy sigh after working a 12 hour shift as you collapse on your couch, too! Also, like someone else said, definitely watch Fairy Voice Mother's reaction to this! It's such a hoot, and educational! 🧚‍♂️

And the most puzzeling thing: Tati is all self taught. When asked about how she would teach her technique she replied she wouldn't recommend anybody to do her technique.

Tatiana is one of the best, if not the best, but far from the only one that can pull something like this off. Jinjer is, more or less, a Metalcore band though it isn't an exact fit (but that is not uncommon in modern bands). Metalcore singers tend to be very versatile as that genre uses Thrash, Scream and Clean (normal) singing vocal styles (some Metalcore bands will have 2 or more vocalists to cover the styles; for example Electric Callboy or Hanabie). Courtney of Spiritbox, Alissa of Arch Enemy (technically Arch Enemy is Death Metal but they hired a Metalcore singer), Mayu of Nemophila, Yukina of Hanabie, Floor of Nightwish (yes that Floor, no I'm not trolling you, though mostly in previous bands, see ReVamp kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3-2l2lqgp6od5I), Harper deserves a mention (but she is still young), and dozens of others (in the past few years there has been a significant increase in female vocalists that can do Scream/Harsh vocals).

I call it growl vocals 🤔 it is the use of your false vocal chords 🤔 carefully though... if done incorrectly it can mangle your vocal chords 🤔 When practicing... if it starts to hurt or feel uncomfortable... stop immediately and relax your vocal chords 🤔 I was in a choir when I was young... then in the 90's I discovered Morbid Angel, Cannibal corpse, Obituary, Sepultura... and stared practising false chords ( on my own... much like Tatianna ) and it took me a very long time to get good at it as well as doing it safely 🤔 take care and have fun 😊

I can make some of the sounds Tatiana makes, but I'm a guy and I'm big and I'm still not close. I wouldn't feel comfortable TEACHING this, as I haven't been trained and I don't know stuff in any formal sense... but what I did to learn some of this was essentially "screw around and make noise", always stopping immediately when doing something felt uncomfortable or made me cough. The first sound I found was just speaking at a very open, high-airflow rumble with no tone at all. From there, finding more sounds was pretty simple... Change the shape of the airways and the sound changes, change the pressure a bit and it changes in other ways... the important part, far as I'm concerned, is don't do anything that's painful or uncomfortable. I'm very much a dilettante, so I essentially quit when I felt I had gained an understanding of what she's doing, and an idea of what it would take to sound as awesome (and I use that word with full intent) as Tatiana does. But I very much enjoyed exploring more stuff my voice can do. Just take care of your voice, you only get the one vocal apparatus.

Hey Jules, love your channel and the reaction to Tati, she is a Vocal Beast, that's for sure. This was my first foray into the world of "growling" and while I don't understand it completely I have become aware that there are good and bad methods. Tatiana (here) and Floor (Nightwish, "Yours Is An Empty Hope" and before she joined them) both do the growls with precision and great skill. Julia Nilon, who is a vocal teacher in Australia and has a channel on YT as well, did an entire show just on growling, and I believe she brought in Chase Carneson for additional support in the conversation. From what I understood, she is forcing a large quantity of air around her vocal folds, rather than the cords. There is little if any cord vibration happening during that process, which keeps her cords healthy.

Can you talk while belching? That's the same place where the death growl comes from. It's under your vocal cords.

Tatiana is using her Vestibular folds (false chords) to produce the low screams/growls you are hearing in the video. Other vocalists use that as well as what is called a fry scream. To answer your other question. Yes that is 100% her. She is mostly self taught. The rest of the band is also extremely tight and talented. The drummer is pretty much so, the only member with any formal musical training. As he (Vlad) is a classic trained pianist. The band as a whole are from the Donbas region in Ukraine.

Great reaction. Please check out Falling in Reverse Last Resort Reimagined (maybe give Papa Roach original a quick listen before, if you don't know it). There's an interesting video on the channel of The Charismatic Voice, in which she took Will Ramos, one of the best harsh vocalists, into a voice lab, where scientists put a camera down his throat to see how he does this harsh vocals. It's called something like operation throat camera. The video is very long, but the actual part in the lab a good length for a reaction video. Greetings from Germany

It's Progressive Groove Metal or you could even just say Groove Metal. They initially were a Metalcore band.

Tatiana must have perfect technique as I read Jinjer did 156 concerts in one year before the Plandemic screwed up everyone's lives, and she really didn't have any major problems with her voice.

Great video, with the perfect pause. I appreciate your interest even if it not for you. Tatiana uses a mix of false chord growls and fry scream. Jinjer also considers themselves to be progressive metalcore/ groove metal. They are so talented and honestly are some of the best in the business today. Be sure to check out "Perennial" live at Wacken, "Judgement and Punishment" one take, and "Teacher, Teacher". They blend grooves and genres effortlessly. Hope to see more soon

It is called a false chord vocal scream. Not to be confused with a vocal frye scream which is much more high-pitched. There are a ton of tutorials on youtube alone. Including from the pros who other famous bands learned from, like Mara Lisenko.
