TL,DR:
SVG control in Figma is great, but utilizing optimization tools Illustrator is still superior.
SVG paths can be flattened in Figma which cleans up layers nicely within the GUI, but when exported out to code the DOM elements still remain.
Running it through an optimizer helps, but it's still just minifying everything but keeping all those DOM elements.
Illustrator can flatten to a single compound path, greatly reducing filesize, memory usage, web performance results, etc.
