I know this is 3 years late, but great video! This is one of the few video essays about Her that focuses on the production design, which I think is one of the best parts of the movie. If anyone asks me what movie world would I want to live in, it's absolutely this one. The ideas you shared about how the world seems cheap and lonely didn't strike me when I watched the movie, but I think those are interesting points to think about.

Shane Huang You would want to live in this world? Damn I thought the exact opposite after watching the film. I think the whole point of making the world so aesthetically stunning was to highlight the fact that the physical world is what we - as humans - crave and need. Yet, similar to but not just as the lead of the film portrays, we search for the most metaphysical ways to live.

The world (in her) is cheap and lonely. Everyone talks to their phone, everyone was "being elsewhere" than being at the present or engaging with their surrounding. It's like everyone lives in their own bubble. There was no real connection in that movie (except for the last scene)

Interesting. I never had the feeling that the world was cheap. It was very retro-futuristic, and maybe the old furniture gives off a cheap vibe, but I find it all gives a very sleek look to the film. I agree with the isolation, though. Good video! Keep it up!

I agree. I was coming from the perspective of a college student that owned ikea furniture lol... completely unaware of the world of Scandinavian minimalism. I now totally respect that style and love it immensely.

Her it've been one og my favorite film, i saw along time ago, but I always remember it everytime that feel lonely or just a little be sad, that's because the whole photography wih the colors make feel that. Also a factor to huge in this atmosfer is the music, when everything is in silence and just a piano song, that's exactly what the filme nees to transmit ease but with lonely

I watched this before and it's a really good movie. I used to search for the title of this movie and i stumble on this review of yours. Thanks! 😊

Hey! Thanks for the kind comment. It's not so much a review, more of an analysis of a particular part of the movie. I should do more of these, they're really fun.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but honestly your analysis of it and just how you talk about it in general really makes me want to watch it. Great job! This was really well done.

+FrumiousReads It truly is an incredible film. It's an emotional film with great social commentary. Joaquin Phoenix and the entire cast are great in their featured and limited roles. It's just an interesting take on the future without being too pessimistic. Appreciate the feedback!!

It appears this video has gained some traction lately. That encouraged me to go back and give the video a watch (its 3.5 years old now!!). I'd like to present an amendment. Although the furniture is, as i described, ikea like... I'd say it's Scandinavian/ modern rectangular minimalist - which does encompass ikea type furniture (Sweden)... but that does not mean it is cheap. As a matter of fact, far from cheap and very cool - if not a bit clinical and sterile at times (although hygge is cozy). I will stand by my assessment that most ikea furniture can be cheap, but nonetheless a college and young adult staple.

I thought your initial assessment was spot on, both of the film and its furniture. There is a tremendous hollowness that pervades this film, that no amount of rosy hues and soft pastel clothing can warm. It's a meditation on when we reach out to embrace the aching emptiness and find our arms wrapped around ourselves.

this is the best popular film nobody has ever watched (if that makes sense). Truly my number one aside from the Mr Robot series. Everything in it is genius.

Its certainly a niche film. I think it's got it's audience. I just wish Spike Jonze would hurry up and make something else. He's incredible.
