Another way clutter costs you money: My partner had been storing all his kids old clothes and shoes, and all their toys. He meant to sell some of it (not the nostalgic items or items the kids wanted to save). But he never got around to it. When we became partners, I helped him go through it. All the shoes and a good 1/3 of the clothes were moldy or moth-eaten. And so much of the plastic toys had disintegrated. So it never got sold anyway. If he had donated it back when it was in good condition, at least someone else could have benefitted from. Now he just delayed throwing it in the trash for 10 years.

Flash back 58 years and you, Ms. Clutterbug, are my home economics teacher reincarnated. I have always had a neat and tidy uncluttered home because everything you teach, I was taught 58 years ago by a very neat, tidy, organized, and decluttered schoolteacher. I guess when you have five classes a day to teach your school kitchen has to be set up so everything has a place so that the next class can find what they need without wasting class time. I took her teachings to heart, and always kept my home organized (aka a place of everything and everything in its place), I also grew up in a house that wasn't organized, and I saw the chaos it created when you couldn't find what you needed. I swore when I have my own home, I would never have to search for something like I did in my childhood home. I think home economics should still be taught; life skills are important.

This was my favorite statement from the entire show! When she said this, it was like a lightbulb turned on, and it completely changed the way I thought about the items. When she further said the money is out of your bank account the minute you buy it… that’s the ah-ha moment that disconnected the attachment of the object being a guilty “but it costed money.” The money is gone, it has been gone, and the two are no longer linked! This was so helpful. Now, I need to tackle how to part with sentimental items that link to people in my past or items that link to important events/ memories. That is the most difficult for me.

I listened to the mice skitter under my bed and to this day am deathly afraid of spiders. They were everywhere. I pulled the covers over my head and tucked them in around me at night. Cass, the POWER of each one of your POINTS is awesome! It’d take me 20 mins to find anything in my Mum’s house and that’s if I asked her where it was. First time I noticed how much clutter affected my emotions. My narcissistic hoarder ex used his clutter to take over every part of the house so I’d have precious little space and couldn’t decorate so no house was ever a home. I felt like I wasn’t important enough to be a human let alone in a good marriage. Apparently decorating would be adding dust collectors (and express my personality in my own home) and then I’d walk into another room full of boxes along 2-3 walls to the ceiling. I called each room an Olympic hurdling event and if I made it to the other side without hurting myself on the 3D carpet it’d be a win. Towards the end I started separating a few spots in the kitchen so I wouldn’t be in his way but he resented my new small boundaries. When he moved out he only threw out about 3 bins of garbage after never having a clean out. Finally got him to get someone to clean up the rubbish he’d left in the yard last week. He couldn’t even arrange a donation pickup. You and Dana are driving how I set up my home now I’m starting the new chapter of my life. Thank you so much. All marriage I felt like the Cinderella in the first half of the story. I’m just finalising being single so not sure what princess I’ll become but I’ll get there. Princess Fiona? Not Disney but will be happy and free to be me.

I keep donating boxes & bags of things... and when I get back home there's MORE waiting for me. Some days I know I've got decision fatigue & get worn out. My fix? Watch a bit of Cas on camera & get motivated to fill 1 bag or do something for 15". Always gets me going & moving forward. Yesterday I decided to sort collect & sort through items for Easter. One tub with Easter things was the goal. I did it! But got a laugh out of the 17 Easter baskets we had! Seventeen!!! I'm keeping 4 to use & all the rest are getting donated along with a grocery bag of decorations, extra bunnies & a few dozen plastic eggs :) Had no idea we had that much. Thanks again♡

Thank you driving home the “you already spent the money, holding onto things isn’t making you richer” point. My boyfriend d really struggles with the theory of having spent money on an item so he should keep it even if it’s been years and he hasn’t used it or he’s NEVER used it. 🙌

Perfect time for your video. My 13yr daughter and I are cleaning out her closet. This closet has been neglected. There was a giant pile of clothes knee deep. Clean, dirty new, borrowed from sister, too big, too small. We are on day 4 of cleaning and sorting. I have 5 giant bags to donate! Looking forward to the reward of being happier and less clutter when this is done. 😊

Yes to all of this! And also, we need to start normalizing homes that look lived in. So much of the personal mental and social cost would be reduced if we didn't moralize having a house that looks like a showpiece.

Currently lying on my couch at 12:30am not sleeping because I didn’t clean up after dinner. Admittedly I have fractured my foot so I needed not to be standing but yes I’m resenting that my husband did a half assed job cleaning up for me after I cooked.

We found out 2 weeks ago we were moving and I am doing a massive purge. In these last 2 weeks we have donated over $15,000 in things. I don't want to think about what we have thrown away... but I am looking forward to starting our life in our new house lighter. I had been slowly purging, but to get the house purged to stage has really lit a fire under us both to purge, purge, purge. I love your content and tips for how organize and not keep the things that we don't love.

Great Pep talk!!! My downfall is thrift stores. I ❤ to browse around thrift stores & my house shows it. I have way too much stuff. My hubby and I just recently downsized from a four bedroom house to a 2 bedroom plus office condo. I have so much stuff in boxes that I have no room to store here & it needs to be donated or sold. Ever time I look at the boxes and bags of stuff in the guest room I feel overwhelmed.

Rapunzel for Cass! This is one of your BEST videos! Hard-hitting, but yet compassionate. You present hard things with honesty and humor! A tough balance! I have been decluttering for a few years now. Overwhelm came after many donations of stuff from friends and gifts for children. Stuff is a blessing and a curse! A bigger house and more storage is not the answer. I finally mentally got that!

Truer words have not been spoken, thank you Cas!!! Funny that this popped up this morning in my feed. I've been pondering the same facts for a while. "Getting rid of things will not make you poor". So true! I'm getting rid of things today that I have boxed up for a "$1 sale- garage sale", that will not happen until November. That dollar will not recoup the money spent on said items, nor will it bring me peace of mind that getting rid of them will bring me immediately. I reached a new point of immediate gratification, it's working on living clutter free and peaceful in my home. Thanks again Cas! PS- I would be Mulan. I think you may be a Repunzel from Tangled.😊

My husband and I have been decluttering since about febuary and it seems to never end. But it has gotten alot better. Feels a bit lighter and we realised that we don't have enough storege. That left everything unsorted becuse we didn't know were to put the things we want and need. So now we have 3 new closets were we used to have a bunch of boxes with random stuff. So even if there is alot of work left we have come a long way in 6 months. Love your stories in the end ❤

My Disney princess is Belle because the hardest thing for me to declutter is BOOKS. 😂 After year 3 of decluttering with you and Dawn and Dana I finally have the time and motivation to create art, learn a new language, AND I can keep my dishes clean! There is something so discouraging about looking around your house and seeing the clutter chaos! It just sapped me of all motivation and made me feel so much more tired when I got home from work that I didn't want to do anything... My house now gives me space for peace and energy. Keep up the amazing work!!

I feel a whole lot of this. Not going out because the self-imposed obligations have not been done, procrastinating by hyperfocusing on fun things that are only fun for so long, not having people over pre-Covid. I'm reminding myself this week that these things don't have to be the reality. Nice timing. Also, I personally am not a disney princess, but a misunderstood villain: Maleficent.

Depression* self loathing* not having time* buying things over again* getting divorced ( over this issue)* embarrassed / fear of letting people in my house( due to cps visit and state of my home)* kids with out time with friends* excuse after excuse* What else do you want to know? Buying habits; *items in duplicates ( so you have a back up) * aquireing more than needed due to sales of items you need( food, bath, cleaning supplies, self care products, cosmetics, tools, hobby items) * not finishing a diy project( so keeping specific items for a single project) * saying yes to free items.( that you know in your head, you do not need any of it)

Thank you for putting into words how the stuff was making me feel. I live in a small home and the stuff was draining of my energy and time. I was so frustrated with everything and had no patience. I learned it was the stuff, when I put my house on the market and I had to declutter my home and remove some furniture. Wow what a difference in myself. Thank you ☺️

Girl, preach! Literally have me tearing up with all this truth! Yes to all this. Especially your last point. It's been such a busy summer, working almost nonstop, and even with all that I just didn't feel like I was doing enough because when I got home the house brought me NO PEACE. Everywhere I looked was mess and waste and dust and filth collecting on that mess. Finally I took that negative energy and turned it positive by just purging the clothes that didn't fit me anymore, or were never really my style, donating the furniture that had served me so well before, but now had no place in our home, etc. And it feels amazing! I am no where near finish, but as you said, I started to like myself again. Rather than dreading this season of life and my changing body and the changing schedule, I am embracing it with excitement, getting creative and spending so much less time cleaning because there is simply less to clean! ❤️ Watching your video has inspired me to keep the ball rolling and get my home office/entryway in order. Thanks, Cass! 🌻 P.S. Yes, you're definitely bright and cheerful like Anna and Rapunzel, but you also give me Aurora vibes? Maybe it's the blue eyes and blonde hair, but you're calm and graceful too!

Thank you for your comments, Cass. What I hate the very most is the waste of time. I've been decluttering my home on a continual basis/ and i STILL lose small items. I don't care about the money cost anymore. I care about the time that is lost. I would like to say I am like Cinderella. Innocent and always hoping for the best. Not sure I'm there. Maybe I am more like Mulan. A "get er done" kind of gal.

Thanks so much for this!! I'm 71 and went on disability for a lot of physical problems at age 50! Have SO MUCH clutter but not because I can't part with it, but because I have not been physically ABLE to go through it all!! I'm feeling MUCH better now that I am eating ONLY real food, and gave up the processed and ultraprocessed stuff, and most carbs and sugar!! Last two months have felt better than I have in 20 years!! Just before watching this, I was trying to decide between all the stuff I need and now want to do, or accepting a social event a friend invited me to for Monday!! I know my recent health improvements have allowed me to get a little friendship and social life going after so many years! But I feel guilty doing something JUST FOR FUN, when I have 20 years worth of clutter and boxes to go through and clean out!! Thanks so much for helping me see that I DO NEED a balance!! God bless you for the ways you have helped me!! ❤ 🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏

This was an excellent video I needed to hear, thank you! I have been feeling overwhelmed about how to handle the clutter in our home after decluttering every year for the past 4 and not getting far enough to feel good in our home. I have plenty I see as money that I don't think I will ever use-it's time to let go.

Another way clutter cost you is energy, I remember reading that very thing in your home is asking you for something. Books are asking to be read, clothes are asking you to be worn, kitchen stuff is asking to be used. And when you ignore it, it still stays in your mind. It cost you the energy to think about it all, with less stuff it takes up less space and energy in you mind. Again great video! Love all the things you pointed out!

Our 17 yo and his friends frequently do "Ted Talks." They do other things, like D&D, video games, etc., but it seems like at every event, someone has been assigned to give a talk. And these are usually bizarre topics! This goes on year long, so not just a summer thing.

Right on for addressing the real issues of collecting and hanging on to stuff !!

Thank you Cas. I have moved in the last two weeks. If not for the help of my daughter and son-in-law I would still be buried in my own clutter, making very little progress. You said something that I’ve often forgotten in the declutter wars that is it takes time. The vision is always that the sun is shining, birds are singing, various small animals are cleaning the difficult to reach areas; I’ve risen early feeling highly energetic, brain clear, the most powerful cleaning tools, exact organisation bins, a timer and away you go. Part of this vision of decluttering is a team of decluttering agents (including you Cas) and sim salla bim it’s done. I’m glad it isn’t that way. I need to learn and relearn what I need to get it done. Also learning that buying is different too.
