I'm from Australia, we have huge homes compared to UK and Europe, and even I agree with you. It's crazy what North Americans consider "small spaces". Perhaps they need to declutter. 1400sft = a "small home"??! The laundry - in a home with space and storage everywhere - considered "small"... the big kitchen (even for Australia)... multibathrooms.... all bedrooms with built in wardrobes 😂?! Ive done the conversion to metric (sqm) and that's bigger than my parent's home (they're wealthy/loads of space for two.... and WAY bigger than average family home here). I appreciate the Clutterbug categories, but I'd LOVE to see some Clutterbug makeovers in an inner City European family apartment OR an English Cottage.

Hi Cass, i love your parents Chihuahuas! We have 3 Chihuahuas and they are very sweet TO THEIR PEOPLE ONLY. They don't like lots of loud noises and want to relax and cuddle alot. It may take a little while for them to warm up to you. Let them come to you. They are great pets.

Thank you for showing it’s possible to have an organized and tidy home with having three kids!!! I also appreciate you sharing the size of your home as it helps to see how relatable our own situation is. Glad to hear you also are doing well in a smaller home- that seems so much easier than a larger home.

I'm dying - the chihuahuas! My friend had them growing up. Go in her house, they jump on the arm of the chair when you walk in and try to bite you. We get in the car, I'm in the back seat. My friend says "Oh, Peanut is going to come with us. He's a little weird in the car...What? Worse than in the house?" He jumps in the back with me...I freeze. I think I stopped breathing. He jumps back in front with her and lays down...she says, "Wow, he must like you. He didn't try to bite you." Are you kidding me ??! I feel your pain Cass. Tip to survive unscathed for month with those pups: don't breathe too loudly in bed.

It helps when all of your family members are on the tidy bandwagon and puts things back or away. I've tried so many organization projects around my house and they ends up as a dump all bins or containers. Even if I go in and reorganize in a short time they slowly end up filled with everything. I decided to keep my areas tidy to keep my sanity.

Your home is beautiful, I really hope you can do a series with someone from Europe because our homes are so small in comparison. My laundry room is a walkway to my downstairs bathroom and it is a luxury as usually our washing machines are in the kitchen! Some of the bedrooms I’ve had have just enough room to shimmy around the bed. I’ve just bought a new house and my bedroom is too small for a wardrobe (we have no closets). My art room is crammed 😬If you ever feel like a challenge you know where I am 😂
@supergran10002 жыл бұрын
So agree! I'm from the UK, and my home is half the size of Cass's. Tiny kitchen in which I have my washing machine. Tumble dryer is in a cupboard! No laundry room, no utility, no basement, no pantry, no garage. With all respect to these lovely ladies like Cass, Dawn and Dana, etc; I think WE could show them a thing or two about decluttering and organising!
@ArtyAntics2 жыл бұрын
@@supergran1000 absolutely could! I’m quite organised tbh, it is just tight. My main issue with UK homes is that they have odd walls. We have a chimney in our 70s house which means the sofa only fits in one place and no room in the master bedroom for a wardrobe. Windows only have about 20 cm of wall either side so built in cabinets in any room would block the windows. Total nightmare for storage options.

Wow- what a big house and so much stuff! I’ve never seen so many clothes, especially for the children. Anyway, that is the USA where embodied carbon is not a concern. I see that you have an online store to sell more stuff. I have worked in many poor parts of the world and really admire how organised these people are, even if they live in one room. I lived with my parents and two sisters in one room but now I live in a much bigger home with my children in London- 900 sq ft! People in Japan and Hong Kong live in small spaces- the one great thing that I have learnt from them is to have less stuff. Even the maximalists in London have smaller homes but they curate their stuff so that the space is filled with things they love which are also beautiful. As William Morris said, Have nothing in your home that is not useful or beautiful! This is what I’ve been trying to do. Organising is really for those with too much stuff and time!

Since you don’t love your kitchen maybe changing your kitchen appliances for stainless steel for now. The white tends to stick out more with dark tones. You could sale the ones you have to go towards some gently used one, or scratch and dent. This way you wouldn’t have to spend a lot. But if you have the finances to buy new then buy all together do get even more savings than you would individually. 😊 Oh btw your home looks so much bigger than you said. I like your home. Now, I want an in-depth tour of every drawer and cabinet to see what's in there, and how it's all stored. You are so much fun. Yes, I need some help organizing. The first thing I am going to do is walk around the house and get rid of the paper, old bottles of cosmetics and then make a pile for giving away. I was a librarian (I am retired now) so, that is the one thing I cannot get rid of....books. We are going to put some new bookcases in the living room. The ones we have are not sufficient for our books. I also collect ones that I read as a child. There are books everywhere. Well, once in a while, I get rid of a cookbook or a paperback book, but each one is a treasure to me. I can give up other bits and bobs. If jewelry is referred to as bobs, then that will stay. Thank you for your encouragement and all the tips.

@@BLK2000 that sounds like New York city living in the US. That's a true challenge with small space living. I've lived in large and very small homes over the years. One thing I've learned is that if you have more space you fill it up. If you have less space you get rid of things, and learn to live with less. In most situations you find a way to organize it to make it livable for your family. Most often one room will wear many different hats. It just depends on what the current need is. Making it to my 50's I realize I could live in one room if I ever needed to. Definitely not something I would want to do, but life has taught me that I could. I always feel blessed no matter where I find myself.

@@Clutterbug That is awesome! It doubles the amount of square footage. Great idea of utilizing the basement for extra square footage. I also like how it has bigger windows for a basement.

That explains it! I have a 1290 sq ft apartment and I was watching this going why can’t I make my place look so big 😅

@@Clutterbug so it's actually a pretty good sized house for 5 people. Try living in a 1100 sf house with 6 people and maybe not complain so much 🤷🏻♀️

Ah Cas, u make me laugh....the amount of times u said, my small, house,office,kitchen,2nd lounge,.....u would fall over if u saw the size of average UK homes! your tiny office looks like a huge room to me lol :) xx

🤣right! "Small 9×10' room" is actually a decent size for a home office in most countries. Because we usually don't even have a spare room to convert to an office.

@@cb9825 In the UK we have bedrooms nicknamed ''the box room'' - usually the 3rd and finally room to the family house, above the stairs, >6ft x >6ft.... Cosy :)

Thank god it’s not just me thinking that. Wish my house was as small lol *wanders off to declutter her one built in cupboard again in hopes of eventually being able to hide the hoover in it…*

Cas, I remember when you first started out, redid each of your children’s rooms, your cubbies for their backpacks and coats, your book, your interviews for your show, your weight loss journey and laughed when you talked about your nosey school moms. Love your funny stories at the end as well as when your son was really sick. You were my first friend on KZbin and I won a box that contained Annie Sloans paints! You my YT friend have come a very long way! I listen to your podcasts at night which I am hoping seeps into by unconscious! Love you Cas! 😘

We are 5 adults in 1100 square feet with no basement. It is really tight.

You have a beautiful home. I’ve eliminated all visible storage (baskets, buckets etc). If it can’t fit in my cabinets or other hidden storage spaces that means I need to declutter more. I’ve had the donation truck over 10x the last few month. I’ve decluttered so much I have now have tons of space. I’ve removed excess throw pillows as well it really helped simplify my home and made it feel much cleaner. I’ve realized no matter how much Storage solutions I have it doesn’t help all that much when I still just have too much stuff!

Holy smokes! 4 1/3 minutes in and I’m floored by all the square footage she has. Her daughter has her own bathroom! She has a “such a small room” for a separate office!! Not everyone has that!

I was surprised at this too, especially when she said it was only 1400 sq/ft, maybe she made an error there. I think it would be easier to be organized too, if I had a mudroom, laundry room and office, and her kitchen is huge compared to mine and others. All my rooms have to be multi-functional and that eats up organization space per category.

The kids rooms are all about 10x10. The master is about 12x10 and the bathroom is TINY. The downstairs suite was meant to be an inlaw suite. Edit: I was eyeballing. They're even smaller. It's a split level with many teeeeeeny rooms. Don't be fooled by the wide angle lens needed to see the whole room. It really is a small house.

Cas the house is looking amazing. You really went gung ho with the closet systems and that’s amazing it’s working for everyone. The laundry room looks fantastic too. I can’t believe you are surviving the dog sitting. Everything really looks so good. I wanted to suggest painting your kitchen cabinets again. Or atleast the top ones a lighter color. I think you’ll fall in love with your kitchen again. It’s ok that the railings and doors are dark but I think the instant light and brightness in the kitchen would make you feel super happy. I remember when I switched from black appliances to stainless the lighter brighter color made a huge difference instantly. You don’t need to do appliances but the dark cabinet doors are waiting for project Cas to appear.

Would love to see more organising tricks for apartments, as I don't think two living rooms, three bathrooms, a mudroom and a laundry room means having a small house 🤣 It's gorgeous, but it's definitely not small.

It sounds like a lot of rooms, but 1400 sq feet for 5 people seems pretty tight to me. You have to be smart with every space.
Wow, every room is so color coordinated. It looks so tidy. I think your house is beautiful
