The F15EX much like the Super Hornet is really a new airplane designed to utilize existing infrastructure to build. The F15EX has a 20,000 hour service limit, carries more ordinance and will be cheaper to operate than the F35. In none contested air space it only makes sense. Especially since the F22 is aging much faster than anticipated and the F35 production is lagging the retirement curve of the F15 fleet. The G6 Fighter needs to get here fast as we may find ourselves without a G5 air superiority fighter if it doesn't.

@@gk5891 This is an excellent point, and one that I think a lot of people miss. The F-15 airframe (with upgrades) will likely continue to stay in service for decades to come while the various models of current F-15s in service get retired out as they pass their service lives. I think a lot of people have a hard time drawing a distinction between an actual individual airframe and the airframe/model as a whole. What made the F-22 so expensive in hindsight wasn't the actual cost, but the fact that Congress pulled the funding and the production chain for it was cannibalized for the F-35 project. Likewise, what makes the F-15 so cheap (comparatively) is the fact that the supply and production chains for it are still in existence, which means that changes can be made to them much more easily than having to rebuild them from scratch (as would need to be done for the F-22). I wouldn't be surprised if we see further versions of the F-15 past the EX drawn up in the next decade or so that adds increasingly advanced features to it.

The F15 is the hall of fame fighter who never lost a fight, the F22 is his protege who is better in nearly every way and everyone is afraid of him. The F35 is the f22 but instead of training under the F15 religiously since birth, it trained until it finished high school and then went to college and got its PH.D The F22 is the most deadly man made flying object in history, and the F35 is the F22 at 85-90% strength but also insanely smart. The F22 is so stealthy that the size of its radar cross section is somewhere between a bumblebee and a mayfly, while the F35's radar cross section is about the size of a hummingbird. A little bigger than the F22. The F22 is faster, more nimble, and overall deadlier in a 1v1, but the F35 is still absolutely an apex predator, and the F15 is a speed demon with missiles attached to it. *Edit, I've just learned that the new F-15EX "Eagle Two" is (among other upgrades) getting a massive boost to horsepower with new engines producing 11,000lbs MORE thrust, meaning it's literally getting supercharged and more technical upgrades like sensors and electronic warfare capabilities. If I'm understanding the numbers correctly its a nearly 60% additional boost to its thrust capability.

I was always too scared to fly in one when given the chance because I had just been disgnosed with epilepsy during that time and wasn't sure if I was healthy enough, but man, seeing those things take off and even fly during air shows was such an amazing experience.
@Ulquiorra4163 Жыл бұрын
Posted this on Nick's video cause it had more crazy F-15 facts, including two pop culture facts I missed including. Alright, I found an old book on fighter jets to help add to this legend of a plane. You called it a rocket. NAH! It BEAT a rocket. It would actually set a world record in time-to-height and beat the Apollo moonshot at certain heights. It also set records for crossing the country as well. And let's not forget the big one: the F-15 was pretty much made due to translation error and luck. The Soviets had created the much overrated MiG-25 Foxbat, a interceptor capable of very high speeds of Mach 3 (which basically became a resource/money dump cause the Reds made it to counter a bomber we never even put into full production). The US got word of this new Mach 3 capable fighter and basically went "Oh shit, we need to beat this." Now, did you catch the mistake? If you did, you did better then US intel did. A translation error got the Foxbat labeled a FIGHTER instead of an INTERCEPTOR, which is important as one means a combat aircraft that is ment to stay and play if need be against all types of aircraft, the other is ment to go as fast as possible to intercept enemy bombers (typically) so being maneuverable isn't a need compared to top speed. So, the F-15 would be needed but SAC would've been an issue as well due to it usually being run by bomber generals...... cept that time the fighter jockeys got command of SAC and gleefully greenlit the program. Thus, the beautiful monster that is the Eagle came to be the king of the sky we know and love. Side note: ever notice the F-22 looks alot like an Eagle but made for stealth? Kinda the point, if it ain't broke, just make it a better plane anyway cause fuck fighting fair. One more fact is the F-15 is current the best fighter aircraft PERIOD due to both it's standing flawless kill ration of 104:0 and it's held that record for 50+ YEARS,. Yes, technically some planes have more kills but they importantly have losses as well so the Eagle reigns at the top as of now as none have been lost to enemy aircraft. As for pop culture, in the 80s Transformer cartoon, the F-15 was Starscream's vehicle mode cause the air commander insisted on assuming the form of the best combat aircraft he could, so he picked the Eagle then and the Raptor later in the Bay era. Finally, the F-15 would be the cover plane for Ace Combat Zero where your AI wingman, Pixy, has the same accident as the Israeli pilot and he paints his wing red as homage to his accident, even gaining the nickname 'Solo-wing Pixy.'

I’m not a pilot, and never been in the military. But I’ve seen on of these at an air show. When it was discussing creating enough thrust to overcome lift, drag, etc…we saw a demonstration of that. It came in low and turned vertical right above the crowd. It can actually accelerate while going vertical. So it disappeared like rocket. It’s insane. Only thing more impressive was watching a Harrier come by at 400mph or something around there, and the next time it comes by it stops midair. Spins around in a 360° circle, and then starts backing up in the air.

Hello, New subscriber here! I am former US Army Infantry 11B2P, last 2+ years in 3ID LRSD Wurzburg FRG. Some schooling at ILRRPS. Anyway my father retired US Army LTC, and 2 tours in Vietnam as Huey pilot, some with MACV/Sog. DFC. Later as liaison officer with 18th Airborne Corp to 33rd TFW then at Eglin AFB he flew 4Fs and when they transitioned to F15s he flew those as well. This was circa 1979. He was first soldier in the US Army to have his name on an F15! In the video you highlighted I believe it was the 33rd that got of the MiG kills. The wing had a sign at their entrance that read “Largest SW Asian MIG parts distributor.” By that time my father was retired and working on the GBU projects at Eglin. Development faster esp on procurement side once now question we were going to engage. - that is whole different topic if interested. Anyway, saw the A10 video and loved it! My high school friends father helped design the weapons rack on it - also at Eglin. Little did we know at that time how badass that mofo would be! The plane most loved by grunts for sure!!!

That plane that lost a wing was flown by an Israeli pilot who activated his afterburner and stopped the plane from spinning. No one realized a whole wing was gone till it landed, and not even Mcdonald Douglas, who built it, knew how it continued to fly until they sent a team to review all the data

This is a demo video of the F-22 Raptor at Huntington Beach, CA. I was a AIC (Air Intercept Controller in the Navy for 14 years, I never had control of one of these aircraft...just F-4's and F-14's. The most impressive thing for me about the F-22 is the turning circle. It can change course on a dime. That is mind boggling. I would hate to be an enemy fighter trying to chase one down from behind. It is also fast and quick, An absolutely amazing aircraft.

Fun fact, an F15-E that ran out of ordinance from a bombing run dove at the ground and pulled up at the last second to produce a sonic boom and scare away the enemy that had the American troops ambushed on the ground. I believe there is a video about it here on KZbin. It saved the lives of all the boots on the ground that day. The Enemy ran for their lives thinking it was bombs being dropped, It literally is the Bully of the skies. lol

That wasnt just vs F-15s it was F-15s and other unnamed aircraft. Usually when F-15s score a kill on F-22 it is in a 1v4+ and or the F-22 has to dogfight with multiple aircraft, or the F-22 has its radar disabled or is put in an ambushed scenario.
@bulldozer89507 ай бұрын
The f15 will continue to be in use because it’s still pretty advanced and you don’t need the maximum technologically superiority of something like f35 if you already have total air superiority. If there’s no threats might as well use something cheaper than f35 that can carry more. Additionally, it’s important to note the us airforce is literally generations ahead of everyone else. We’ve already built a 5th gen fighter (f22), cut its production because it was so overkill it was unnecessary, waited a decade, and restarted with a new 5th gen fighter (f35) and built 1000 of them. The only country that might be close is China, who might have 5th gen as well but it’s hard to know if it’s actually as advanced as they claim or largely propaganda (or somewhere in between). The Russians technically have a couple but it’s like 12 and they don’t even seem to actually be 5th gen in performance. And the only other countries that are close are all just allies of the us that despite being close just bought f35 instead. Us upgraded 4th gen fighters will often still be a generation ahead of anything the us military needs to engage, so after some quick runs from f35 to destroy stuff like air defenses and other advanced fighters 4th gen fighters like f15 ex would be able to do a lot of the stuff because it’ll become a relatively low threat environment.

The thing about The Fat Electrician is that he is to Military and Military history as Casual Geographics is to Wildlife Biology and Wildlife Biology History. He's just going to give it to you as it is and it's your job to try to keep a straight face about how he's telling you the details. Also, what are you on about? "I haven't reacted to the F-15." That's the thing the US made in panic response to the Soviet Foxbat and it turns out that the US just reinvented aerial warfare due to that and made it the rest of the world's problem. The thing really differentiating the F-15, F-16, and F-18 from the F-22 and F-35 is stealth and combat intent. So the Teen series of fighters had to be fast. That was their anti-missile defense. However around the time of the F-18, engineers and the military realized something kind of important that ended up slowing down (as in physically, not the development time) of the F-22 and F-35. Most aerial combat doesn't happen at mach 2. It is usually sub sonic because sonic and super sonic flight is just asking for things to get ripped off. Then the F-22 and F-35 have stealth built into them. So instead of having to outrun a missile, the onus is put on the missile to find the 22 and 35 first. So the requirement to move at sonic and super sonic speed became less of a requirement as stealth became the focal defense and also there's little reason for an air superiority fighter to "efficiently" cruise at above mach speed because dogfights, should it come to that, don't happen at above mach speed.

I know I am late, but we still use the F-15 a lot. It lives on in different variations and I think we still use the regular one as well. Though the different ones are the F-15 Silent Eagle stealth variant. There is the F-15 Strike Eagle variant allowing it to carry more weapons. Just recently the F-15 X or EX or something, came out. There may be more but that’s all I remember.
@DavidRichardson15310 ай бұрын
Yeah, while the C variant is still active, it stopped being built decades ago, and all production lines in the world for it have been shut down and fully decommissioned. So, if you want a new F-15 of any variety, you have to go with the E variant as the base, and that is what happened with the EX. Now, I personally don't know if this is indeed the case, but I suspect that is why that variant's designation starts with an E, even though despite have the setup of a two-seater, it is flown only with the pilot and no back-seater (it can still have an operating back-seater, but it rarely, if ever, happens).

I was Security Forces for an F-15 base with an active mission. This is one bad ass plane. We had the oldest F-15s in the Air Force inventory, but they were the best maintained. Southern Oregon holds the F-15 flight school. They started pairing F-15s with the F-22. The entire nose of the F-15 is a radar, its job is to take out enemy air craft before the enemy even knows the F-15 is there. The reasoning for pairing the F-15 with the F-22 is so that the F-15 can mark for the F-22 while the F-22 is able to use its stealth capability in conjunction with the F-15s radar. This gives them more battlefield knowledge when there is no AWAX available. The F-15 can also fly in the stratosphere and shoot down satellites with proper armament. The clip where the F-15 takes off and breaks the sound barrier, thats my base. They only do this during an alert take off, which means something is violating air space and/or is a threat. Its amazing to watch. Never gets old, especially at night when you get to see the afterburner cookin!

Prior service Eagle Keeper here. And it's a dream to maintain as well. On average it takes 2.5 - 3 hours for 3 crew chiefs to change an engine, modular avionics and other time saving tech. When compared to the F-4 where it takes 5 guys 8 hours to remove and engine, well, you get the picture.

Neat thing on the F-15 that lost the wing and kept flying, if I remember right, is that the body of the plane generates slightly more lift than the wings combined due to the design. So losing the one wing didn't put it in a horribly unstable center of lift to center of mass offset that would result in it rapidly/instantly slipping into a unrecoverable spin. This combined with the very large control surfaces and it's speed and thrust allowed it to counter act the offset forces that did come into effect when it lost it's wing enough that... well it kept flying and landed lol. If it wasn't for these three factors, the high lift amount of the body, large control surfaces, and speed/thrust it couldn't of done what it did.
@SomethingScotty7 ай бұрын
I think the 1990's comedy movie Hot Shots! had a scene in it where the pilot with the nearsightedness reported to flight control that it has lost both wings but there was no problem to report, and then like 15 minutes later after the battle in the movie was over and everyone's on the flight deck that dude in the wingless F-15 just bellyflop lands the craft onto the deck.

It’s the power to weight ration due to the size of the aircraft and the power the engines produce = 1/1. Giving the F-15 eagle not just speed but maneuverability in dog fights. Thus making the F-15 a very big threat in air to air combat. Coupled with look down shoot down radar, this fighter can also cover beyond visual range engagements as well. It’s the best of what the Us has fielded and proven in combat.

It should be noted that while the F15 only lost a wing, the plane that hit it pretty much disintegrated.

Correction the Israeli F-15 collided with a Israeli ayit (A-4N modification eg. Modern hud and mfds.). The Ayit was not destroyed “immediately”. The auto ejection was set off before the ayit entered a death spiral (the high speed and loss of vertical stab causes a-4s to just disintegrate (why autoeject was added.).
