What exactly does it mean for muscular tissue to be one muscle with multiple heads instead of multiple muscles? Is it that the heads of a muscle all insert into a single tendon? What determins how many heads a muscle has? Why do some muscles have more heads than others? Is it down to how much force the muscle in question is generally expected to produce? Or do different muscle heads pull the same tendon in different directions allowing for more fine-tuned/articulate movement?

Kinesiology, the one course that's giving me a run around the loony bin. I have less than a month before my State Exam hits (Massage Therapist-in-Training), and I've been having a hard time working out this rather complex topic. I would love to have a series of videos on the different muscles with details about their origins and insertions alongside their actions. Do you have a library of videos for that? I've been hunting for videos on this and yours is the first one that's actually explained it in a way I can understand.

Britta Nicole Miller Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it. I don’t have any others right now but I plan on doing more. I have a video coming out next week about the kinesiology of grip strength, but that probably won’t help you. Are there any specific regions you want to see covered? The best resource I used for learning Is and Os was actually a palpation book (by a massage therapist) called “The Field Guide to the Body”. It was a book on palpation but gave me hands on - literally - experience with each bit of soft tissue. Good luck on the exam!

A muscle will always only one origin and one insertion. Usually, the origin is the more proximal point and the insertion is the more distal point, but it also depends on movement. Wikipedia will have the answer!

Hi Corporis, I have a quick question regarding muscle origins/insertions. I understand that generally speaking, the insertion is pulled to the origin.
