that calming effect of a goat on a horse makes sense, when you think about it. both are "flight over fight" animals, just that goats give much fewer fucks. seeing a smaller fellow prey animal just chilling out, reassures the paranoid horse, that there's no danger around. there are plenty of other examples, for this mechanism working, like having little "dither fish" in an aquarium.

In english the word well means good, so 'you look well' is the same as 'you look good'. Now, if you go to a store to buy a black pen, but they only have blue pens, you 'may as well' buy a blue pen, because a blue pen is 'as well' (as good) as a black pen. Instead of might, you could also use may or could, as in 'may as well' and 'could as well'; the meaning wouldn't change. You don't hear people often saying 'could as good' or 'might as good', but i'd say they're still correct.

Here's one I just learned the origin of recently "goose is cooked" which means someone is completely screwed. It originated in the 15th century after the execution of the famous Czech theologian Jan Hus who allegedly uttered the phrase "this goose is cooked" as he was about to be burned at the stake for heresy. This was a dark joke as his surname Hus sounds like the German word for goose.

I thought that "Balls to the Wall" was a reference to an old steam engine. Inside the engine, there would be two balls spinning to indicate the speed that they were traveling. So if you had the "Balls to the Wall", that meant you were going full speed.

That one got debunked. The device in question is called a centrifugal governor and it prevents certain parts from moving faster than a given speed (they're also used in elevators as a safety device - they keep if from falling too fast in the event of a cable failure and active the emergency brakes). In the case of steam locomotives, they similarly should NOT spinning that fast under normal circumstances even at top speed. Specifically, if the spinning counterweights get too high, they open a valve that slows the engine down to prevent damage from the engine running at a speed higher than it's rated for.

"Balls to the Wall" originated earlier than airplanes & throttle sticks, they came from the use of Centrifugal Governors on various machines at the start of the industrial era. The Governor had two heavy balls that would "move out" with the rotational force, hitting a throttle shut off that prevents it from spinning faster. A lot of people still put goats with their horses 😁most people don't have herds of horses and they will get depressed without one. They're highly social animals and can actually deteriorate and die from depression. So a goat basically behaves the same, eats the same, communicates similarly and is MUCH cheaper than getting more horses. It's a friend for a lonely pony😃

I believe the terms "balls to the walls", "balls out" , and "highballing" originate with the positions of the spherical counterweights on a centrifugal governor for a stationary steam engines when running at full speed. Certainly "highballing" ( applied to a steam locomotive at full speed ) predates the aircraft reference by 100 yrs or more, even though the railroads used forward momentum to govern the speed, rather than the aforementioned centrifugal governors
