It’s. Our. Time. A win today would be the metaphorical passing of the torch in my opinion, only to be solidified if we meet again in the playoffs, where we will dominate them making everyone firmly aware of what we found out in this series, the torch has been passed from Houston’s Correia, Altuve, Bregman and Springer to Baltimore’s Gunnar, Holliday, Westburg and Cowser, but they didn’t have Kjerstad, Rutschman, Mayo and Bautista(Bradish - Kuechal | Burnes - Verlander | Santander - Alvarez), or Rodriguez for that matter, and we all know the list is longer than that with guys like Basallo coming and guys like Povich emerging, and our supporting cast is far superior as well. We also lost for a lot longer than they did, and had more prospects turn into stars than anyone has ever had in baseball history in that short of a time span, which is exactly why this dynasty is going to be so serious, not to mention the fact that new ownership took over just in time, Elias has established himself more than any GM could hope to, Brooks died at the end of last year passing on his magic and Holliday wears #7, which only Billy Ripken has done in Baltimore because that is, was, and always will be Senior’s number, bc Cal Senior will always be the patriarch of Baltimore Baseball, so the talent is with us, the ownership is there, the front office has been there, the baseball Gods are there, the city is going into full rage and the Magic is Officially Back as of Santander’s Grand Slam.(no way he makes that play between his legs in 99 of 100 attempts, no way they forget to turn 2 and go to 3rd instead 99 out of 100 times, no way Tony gets 3 straight fastballs like that when he’s looking for a slider, no way Cowser beats out the first baseman the next day, no way Holliday is available to pinch hit for Rivera, no way he breaks an 0 for 20 with 9Ks to become one of the youngest players in MLB history to record 3RBI as a pinch hitter 9 of 10 times, no way Suarez and the bullpen hold the hottest offensive team in baseball to 2 runs on a day where their best holds us to 3 in 9 of 10 games, and we are just getting started? That’s only 2 games into Orioles Magic. So buckle Up baseball. 40+ years of Magic about to be unloaded on y’all.

Dean Kremer has arguably the best 1st inning stats in all of baseball with an ERA under 2 this season. Albert Suarez has been nothing short of dominant this season as a spot starter for the Orioles, and has answered the call every time he’s been called upon. Cade Povich is starting to show that he has the stuff to be a better version of Max Fried and not the Max Fried-lite people have called him, with the exception of one 4-run inning against the best offense in baseball since July in Houston, he has been virtually perfect in his two starts since returning from AAA. Trevor Rogers is a solid LHP that has experience coming out of the bullpen. My point? As it stands, the O’s will be getting a semi-fresh Grayson Rodriguez and Zack Efflin back to the rotation before October starts while Danny Coulombe rejoins the bullpen. With Povich stepping up the way he has, if he can continue to get better with each start, that would send Dean, Trevor and Albert to the bullpen where Dean would be an incredibly dominant first reliever after our starting pitcher, especially pitching out of a jam, with a great backup option in the left handed Rogers. Meanwhile Suarez’s dominance to both sides of the plate and all parts of lineups, combined with his extremely emotionless demeanor and his brother’s success as the Padres closer, there is little doubt that he will be exactly what we have needed in a totally shut down closer. Which sends Dominguez to the setup role where he has been near flawless most of his career, and virtually flawless in the postseason, especially considering his ability to face both sides of the plate. Then Cano is continuing to look better with every start, and has proven that he just needs much more consistent work out of the bullpen to be a consistent reliever, which makes him our strikeout/ground ball double play reliever if someone gets into a jam in a close game. At the same time, Soto is finally starting to look like the 2021-2022 All Star caliber pitcher, giving us a LHP throwing 100MPH to work the earlier late innings, just like we already know Danny Coulombe can, has and will continue to do. Ultimately, you have Burnes, Efflin, Rodriguez, Povich as your four man starting rotation, all of whom are capable of 5-7 shutout innings against any team in baseball, with Kremer/Rogers in the 5th-6th innings, Soto/Coulombe/Cano for the 6th-7th innings, Dominguez in the 8th and Suarez slamming the door in the 9th, leaving the 8th and final slot to Keegan Akin in my opinion, not Craig Kimbrel, sorry, and as a whole, I wouldn’t want to be in a battle of the bullpens with that 8 man relief staff at all. Every one of those guys are capable of 1-2 completely shut down innings in an extra innings scenario or early relief appearance situation, but with that 4 man rotation and that bullpen working on 3 batter minimums and passing the torch from there(in other words, you get 3 batters to get 3 outs, and then it’s on to the next guy whether you get 3 outs or not), if the starters go 6, there’s no way they don’t get 9 scoreless outs 3 batters a time. It’s not just about the quality of stuff either, it’s the drastic difference from one pitcher to the next. From the starters like Burnes and Grayson who have good secondary pitches, but still rush it up at 97+mph, to finesse guys like Efflin and Povich with lower velocity, into guys like Kremer/Rogers/Coulombe who are still throwing mid 90s, but primarily getting outs with good breaking balls, while guys like Soto, Cano and Dominguez throw 98-100+ with absolutely gnarly secondary pitches and a finisher like Suarez throwing 95-97 at the top of the zone behind a change up that I think is one of the best in the game, especially against lefty’s, and they’re all throwing from different arm slots, much different body styles and guaranteeing that hitters are never going to find themselves in a comfortable situation once the starters hand the ball over. Meantime you have Cowser, Rutschman, Gunnar, Tony, O’Hearn/Jimenez, Westburg, Holliday, Mountcastle, Mullins(Left/Right 1-9), and O’Hearn/Jimenez, Kjerstad, Mayo, Slater available as bats off the bench, and Urias as a defensive installment late in a game for Holliday at 2B until Jackson gets that comfort and experience levels up to become more of a Gunnar at 2B versus what he is now. In other words, yes we have been injury plagued all season, but Elias made the right moves(with the exception of Norby/Stowers for Rogers, that one didn’t work out and Norby is already looking like a well above average everyday player)and even though Bradish, Means, Wells and Bautista won’t be on the October roster, we will have a very complete, arguably the most complete, roster in baseball entering the postseason with that rotation, that bullpen, that lineup and that bench. The question marks surrounding this team have been the depth of the rotation, the bullpen as a whole and the experience of the position players, but when it’s all said and done, I think they’re going to say that we won it all because we managed the games our Aces pitched in, but dominated in the games started by the 3-4 pitchers of our’s versus their’s, while the bullpen was the most consistently dominant aspect of the team all postseason, as the young studs and mostly postseason virgin players got the big hits on our way to a World Series title. It’s simple logic, with those starting pitchers and this lineup, we stand the best chance by far to get out to an early lead, and with all that added to a few, already dominant bullpen pieces, we will hold those leads, and stay in games long enough to take the lead whenever we don’t jump out to an early advantage. The later a game goes without the other team establishing a 4-5+ run lead, the more likely it is that they’re going to be headed to the clubhouse while our celebrate on the field. There isn’t a team in the AL that can size up with these Baltimore Orioles as long as we aren’t beating ourselves like we have been all throughout most of July and most of August, and we already downed the Phillies with authority when they were the hottest team in baseball, and the Dodgers are up next, and guess who also happens to be the hottest team in baseball as we start a series against them, the Dodgers. If we beat Houston today and take 3 of 4, then we know for sure that Tony’s swing was the turning point of the season and this is the beginning of an avalanche that might not stop until March/April of 2025, but we will know for sure, for sure, after the team boards the flight from LA to Colorado. And if we do beat Houston today, I almost feel bad for the Dodgers that they had to play Seattle and Tampa Bay before us, because they might have forgotten what it’s like to pitch to real offenses, leaving them way unprepared for this lineup. Can’t wait to see what happens this week after the way things had been going the last 2-3 weeks, these could be the games that we look back to in November and say, “this is when we started to believe, this was when we started to realize, this was when we knew we were going to win it all this year, and that our time had finally come.” And it could be a bigger deal than anyone realizes, because a World Series win this year, could be exactly what we need to provoke the ownership into signing Burnes and Santander this offseason, and possibly Tanner Scott as we drop Kimbrel’s $12M which would make next October’s rotation Burnes, Bradish, Efflin, Rodriguez with Wells, Kremer, Rogers, Suarez, Soto, Dominguez, Cano, BAUTISTA in the bullpen, while the whole lineup returns except with another year of experience including a World Series win of experience and Holliday, Kjerstad and Mayo become everyday players with Basallo likely debuting in 2025 as well. If we could just get McDermott to the bullpen so I can prove to everyone that I’m right and that he will be one of the best relievers in all of baseball throughout his entire career and turn into us having 2 Felix Bautista caliber dominant relievers for many, many years, then life would truly be as beautiful as humanly possible for the next 10 years at least, and we would absolutely be the new dynasty of baseball, with the best shot of three-peating since the Yankees did it if we win it all this year considering the competition around baseball right now, especially in the AL, which is why Houston has been where they’ve been the past 8 years.

This is shaping up to potentially be the biggest week of the Orioles season. We beat the Astros again today and take 3 of 4, with Povich, Suarez and Kremer starting all 3 games we won, the Dodgers better look out because they’re going to be playing a very different Orioles team than they would have played before that swing by Santander. If the Orioles take 2 of 3, or better yet, sweep the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine, the Orioles are going to run the table, win well over 100 games, and enter the playoffs as the #1 seed overall in all of baseball. As Grayson Rodriguez, Zach Efflin, Danny Coulombe, Jordan Westburg, Heston Kjerstad and Coby Mayo rejoin the big league club between September 1st and the start of the postseason. Which all but guarantees that Baltimore will host their first Fall Classic of the 21st century, and likely win their first World Series since Cal and Eddie did it in Philly back in 1983, which also means that the Orioles could clinch their first World Series win on Baltimore soil since Boog and Brooks did it in 1970 against the Big Red Machine at Memorial Stadium. That’s 54 years since the Baltimore faithful have been able to celebrate a World Series win in their home stadium, and the first World Series win for the Baltimore Orioles franchise since I was born. All I know is, with each passing day, it seems more and more inevitable that the Commissioner’s Trophy is bound to return to Baltimore.

Anyone notice that Cowser and Holliday seem to get big hits when the crowd is at its loudest? I noticed that with Kjerstad too, that he seemed to have his best at bats when the crowd was loudest. Can’t help but wonder if that’s a sign of things to come this October. Imagine what this lineup looks like when Westburg comes back, and if Kjerstad is able to come back from this concussion thing and get enough ABs during September call ups to get his groove back. Imagine if Mayo comes up and has the same success all of our other rookies have had after going through their debut slumps. Kinda crazy to think about. In a playoff game you’re going to start Mountcastle and Mullins for their gloves, and just keep them in the bottom of the order where any production is a welcomed, but unexpected success that you’re not counting on. However, if Mayo and Kjerstad are swinging hot bats, that’s some pretty lethal pinch hitting available to you, especially with the O’Hearn/Jimenez DH platoon leaving one of them available off the bench late, and even Slater has proven to be a solid right handed bat against LHP. That some pretty ridiculous postseason depth for the best pinch hitting team in baseball this regular season.

Then we also have a semi-fresh Grayson Rodriguez, Zach Efflin and Danny Coulombe returning by the start of the postseason. Which means a couple guys will have to go to the bullpen, and even though Dean has been pitching well, his first inning numbers as a starter are so insanely good, literally among the tops in baseball, it makes me feel like he will be way more valuable in October as a lights out 1-2 inning reliever as the first guy into the game from the bullpen for us, then he would be for 4-6 innings every fourth game. Then Suarez’s season and absolutely flat level of emotion, combined with the fact that his brother is one of the best closers in baseball, really makes me feel like he’s the perfect solution to our biggest problem this year if he’s put into the closer role. Especially with Dominguez’s history as a closer compared to him as a set up man. Soto is looking like he’s finding his groove just in time to have it all working by mid-September so he can start a scoreless innings streak that carries into 2025. With Coulombe added to that mix and Cano looking better with every outing as well, this bullpen could easily wind up being the best bullpen of the 2024 playoffs. The talent is absolutely there without question, we just have to stick with the guys that are dealing. I understand Kimbrel still has the ability to be a solid reliever, but just because we are paying him more money than basically everyone else on the team, does not mean we have to use the guy. In October, I honestly just do not want to see Kimbrel under any circumstance in any kind of close game whether we are ahead or behind. Maybe Webb will be back for October and semi-fresh as well, maybe not, but either way you have Kremer for the 4th-6th, if you put Covich in the #4 slot of the rotation(which I think is a no brainer decision bc he absolutely has great stuff and pitchers like him tend to have their best success in the postseason, look at Max Fried, they’re almost identical pitchers and check out his postseason resume, but the simple fact that there’s a chance that he could throw a 2 hit shutout in October should make him the #4 guy, and Rogers is a lefty which is very helpful in the bullpen)then you have Rogers available to back up Kremer in those innings, then you have Coulombe, Cano and Soto to cover the 6th-7th, Dominguez in the 8th, Suarez the 9th. You still have Akin, Kimbrel, Perez, possibly Webb, Smith, now Selby, Baker, etc. to take the last 2 spots of that bullpen and play the lower leverage roles like holding 4-5 run leads. Lots to look forward to now that the Magic seems to have returned to Baltimore and joined this phenomenally talented Baltimore Orioles ball club. Most talented we’ve seen in a long, long time, and might wind up being the most talented Orioles team we’ve ever seen when all is said and done.
