I had 39 opossums living under my house while doing some renovations. Was able to trap all 3 moms and 36 babies. The last two babies were the hardest to let go into the woods behind my house... I wanted to keep them so bad.lolol But nature rewarded me. I'm raising a baby squirrel that was rescued from a cat. Hoping to release him into the woods behind my house in the next 5-6 weeks. I'd still love to rescue a racoon or opossum tho. 💞

Where I live in Canada, our local wildlife sanctuary and rescue regularly takes in baby opossums who's mothers have been killed, usually by being hit by cars. In fact, there are online reminders that if anyone sees a dead opossum on the road to please check if there are babies and to save any that are alive so that the wildlife rescue can rehab them.

The sad thing about possums is that they don't live very long. A year or two in the wild, maybe four years in captivity. I just can't have a pet like that. It's hard enough losing a dog after 12-15 years, but losing a pet you love after just a few years? We have a few stray cats and possums that we've fed daily over the years, and every so often we won't see the possum for awhile and we know that he's not with us anymore. It's just sad. I need to look into having a pet that will outlive me so I never have to say goodbye.

Get a reptile or a bird. Some can live upwards of 40 years.
