Next to my MCS suspension and ACE header, I think this is the single biggest upgrade for my BRZ yet! The OS Giken Super Lock limited slip differential replaces the standard Torsen style diff that comes in the BRZ, FRS, and 86. The clutch style OS Giken improves rear grip under power and cornering, an issue I have suffered from in the past! Hopefully the OS Giken differential will help straighten out my rear grip issues and improve my times. How to install an OS Giken differential for your BRZ, FRS, or 86 just got easier with this video!

Great work Justin! Almost 2 years later this video is helping guys like me, looking to swap in a 2017 4.3 carrier into my 2013 and possibly do a 4.88 R&P on the one that comes out. Now I have the confidence to tackle this job. BTW, You have a great supportive wife there. Congrats.

great video. looks prettt straight forward considering some of the diff swaps ive seen. did you give any thought to a steeper final driver like 4.55? think that would make a nice improvement to torque?
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 5 жыл бұрын
The 2017 cars are already at 4.3 from 4.1 on the older cars (one of the big changes I was talking about in the other comment). I can't really go to much lower as the gears would be too short for competitive autocross.

@@TheBTRGarage yah i read that afew days ago (started looking more in depth at what changes were made) thats a big plus for the newer cars! on another note, for autocross do you prefer coilovers or a typical spring and shock like koni yellows, i ran those and strano springs on my camaro and they totally transformed the car.

Good info, I was wondering about shimming the ring and pinion, so I am glad you mentioned that. I really didn't even want to attempt if that was required, because saving a few bucks to possibly spend $2000 isn't worth it to me. I am hoping to do this on a Miata with open diff. Hopefully it is as straight forward as this! Will have to consult them before I take this on.
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Yea, I would have had a professional shop do it if it required precise shimming and pinion gear work. The tolerances on the 86 platform are good so it drops right it. Not sure about the Miata's but definitely contact OS Giken and they will get you setup right!

Hey Justin. Will there be a knocking sound on this LSD?
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 2 жыл бұрын
During "break-in", yes it will knock a little bit when making slow turns, like in a parking lot or at a stop light. Once you put the OS Giken diff fluid in there the knocking goes away. Very important to use the OS Giken fluid after break-in.

Hey for this build a while back your suggestion. The upgrade on this part does it make a difference in competitor autocross in STX? Also for this part should I do one-way, one half-way, or two way? Also to make it work effectively what other upgrades would be needed? I run Hypermax SP's on my car.
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage Жыл бұрын
For autocross you typically want a one way, and yes they do help improve the car and overall times.

Sorry for this super late comment haha. I wonder why you chose to use Motul for break-in instead of using OS Giken oil from the get go? Also, do you think adding friction modifiers (such as Redline LSD friction modifier) would be useful? Thanks.
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage Жыл бұрын
Motul is what is recommended for the break in, it is also much cheaper than OS Giken fluid. Since you only run break-in fluid for a short period, it doesn't make sense to use the expensive oil. Also, once broken in, only use the OS Giken fluid.
@paulshi5974

@@TheBTRGarage Thank you. And what about the friction modifiers? Are they useful for break-in and after break-in? If so, how much would you recommend to add for 86/BRZ? Thanks.

I question the use of thread-lock here, it sets up in 10 minutes, so when you go to torque those ring bolts, they may not actually have the correct clamping force for the rated torque on your wrench.
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 4 жыл бұрын
It's a valid thought, but this threadlocker doesn't affect torque specifications, which is why I use it often. Per their user manual: * No torque compensation required during assembly I can make sure to point that out in future videos.

Hello! Thanks for explain all the work you do! Is your LSD 1 1.5 or a 2 way ? And why you choose this setup? What is the reliability of this mechanical LSD? Why not stiffen the rear frame with new racing bushing? Will you update the rear link with LCA? Thanks
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 6 жыл бұрын
as noir 84 It is a 1 way LSD, that is what we use for autocross. It provides better on power traction that the OEM diff, and acts like an open diff off throttle (so the car rotates or turns quicker). My rear LCA's are from FRsport, the DIF/SPC product.

Question about the gear oil. What’s the difference in running Motul 75w140 vs 90? I’m not sure which to use in my is300 pumpkin with brz lsd. Thanks
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 3 жыл бұрын
The 2nd number is how "thick" the gear oil is when at operating temperature. So the 75w140 is going to be a thicker oil than the 75w90 when everything is warmed up. Is the BRZ LSD the stock Torsen differential? If so you would be fine with a 75w90 oil, that is what I ran in my BRZ before the OS Giken.

Would I need to drain the diff fluid if I’m just replacing the entire diff with another stock one?
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 2 жыл бұрын
You don't *need* to, but you may get some fluild leaking out of the driveshaft holes when you take it out. Plus, it will be heavier. Only takes a couple minutes to drain it and that is what I would do.

When I’m putting the axles back into the differential, they’re not going all the way back in with ease, even after lubing them up. How did you get yours to go back in so easily?
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 2 жыл бұрын
There is a slip ring on the end of the axle that needs to "pop" into place, if I remember right. Sometimes it just takes some twisting and pushing to get them to snap in there.
