OSS117 is not only peak french comedy, it also perfectly captures the the essence of old bond movies.

Talking as a French person here, I will say I'm extremely (pleasantly) surprised that you guys seem to have liked OSS 117 so much. To me, it always came off as "too French" for its humor and general tone to translate well for foreign audiences. The rhythm of its humor, of its deliveries, the dryness of some of its lines, the puns at times... all of it felt like a "French bubble" that would be very hard to enter to anyone without much knowledge of our culture and what makes us laugh. I'm truly happy that the three of you are proving me wrong today.
@invock21 күн бұрын
And just to be clear, even when it might seem "too subtle" at times, Hubert is 100% of the time the butt of the joke. He is the typical self-important, conservative, macho "product of his time", the Frenchman absolutely certain that "he's the good guy" through and through, while clinging on the most backwards and even insulting opinions towards anything that's "not him". And yes, nothing ever bad happens to him, he is incredibly lucky, all of it makes up for his gross incompetence and stupidity. And that's part of the humor of the entire movie too. He's an ass we love to despise... and end up liking despite ourselves. But that doesn't mean for a second that the film asks us to "cut him some slack".

I was surprised as well to see all those positive reactions. OSS 117 (those by Hazanavicius) is one these movies I often use the lines. Like la Cité de la Peur, la Classe Américaine or Kaamelott (not a movie, but who cares). So I always thought the quality of the movie would be lost in translation.

It's one of my favorite comedy movies ever. It captures both the 60s Bond and the 60s French cinema so well. Dujardin is hilarious. I still have to watch Rio (the second one), but it's not easy to get it over here
@Skinineful21 күн бұрын
So happy you enjoyed this movie, it manages to effortlessly navigate a ton of hot topics while remaining firmly on the "fun" side. Some added context that's harder to get if you're not French: - The "President Coty" bits are especially funny because Coty is a completely forgotten historical figure. Having Hubert gush about Coty would be like a US hero constantly saying that Millard Fillmore or Chester A. Arthur are the greatest US presidents of all time (especially since Coty was succeeded by De Gaulle) - On the other hand, the oud song is a cover of the very famous Dalida, and Egyptian-born singer from the 60s and 70s. Bambino was one of her most famous hits. Also the OSS 117 movies before this one had fallen into complete obscurity when Hazanavicius' released. They absolutely are not culturally influent, they were B-movies before people had TV at home and rented videotapes.

One of the best parodies ever made. None of the sequels came close to the original. Bambino in Arabic, especially since Dalida was actually born in Egypt, was such a nice touch. So much incredible moments in this movie. Berenice Bejo and Aure Autika, good heavens...

50:54 - some you missed; Johnny English, Kingsman, Spies Like Us, Undercover Brother, The Man Who Knew Too Little... Though you can argue whether or not those are all strictly Spy-Spoofs, and although I haven't seen it I have to imagine based on this discussion that OSS 117's got them beat as the better picture.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned what has to be the funniest location card I've ever seen in a movie. They show an establishing shot of the Paris skyline, with the Eiffel Tower prominently framed and the most stereotypically French music playing in the background. This shot is held just long enough for you to wonder what's going on because where we are is so damned obvious, then in massive letters: PARIS. I died.

I'm kinda disappointed Midnight in Paris didn't get a shout out when they're talking about Best Pictures for The Artist. I'm not saying it deserved the Oscar, and I'm certainly not defending the director who made it, but it was a pretty tight little movie that I think told exactly the story it set out to tell, with just enough magical realism to keep me engaged. But yeah, I had no idea this movie existed. Will definitely have to check it out

I dont think movies like this fall squarely into the paradoy genre. When i think of parody its way over the top like Austin Powers (which i still love and think its owed more credit for the cultural juggernaut it was). I think pastiche is a better term for a movie like OSS 117. I would group it with other more subtle parodies that were more concerned with nailing the aesthetic than over the top humor that is overtly mocking the genre. Other movies I'd associate with it are Black Dynamite and Young Frankenstein
@allenrubinstein369620 күн бұрын
It's definitely an off beat choice. I had great fun watching it, but you could look at a thousand top 100 lists and never find it. It's also one of maybe two dozen James Bond spoofs. Espionage jokes go back to Get Smart. The jokes write themselves, and I'm not sure that reflects well on Bond parodies. The (pre-Daniel Craig) Bond films never took themselves very seriously anyway. I don't imagine we'll ever see a Roger Moore sendup because his films are already ridiculous.
