Ostrich attack

Ostriches get very protective of their territory during breeding season. I'm just glad I have a good rake and an escape route! awe take the egg to incubate as our climate isn't dry enough for them here. We did get the egg but I lost that video when TT banned my account.

@nicenesta1334 oh yes, I'm very aware of just how much damage they can. Much like an angry bull or mama cow, I never trust them and give them plenty of space. For the birds I only go in when I need to go in to collect eggs, fix fence, or other general care. There are safe ways to handle these guys and I've come a long way from my days of thinking that holding a rake above my head to look taller would be enough to protect me.

I never hit them with anything, its only there to protect me like in this case. I can brace the flat end of the rake against his breast bone and use that to keep him at a safe distance while I make my escape. (Hopefully good translate worked correctly here!)

​@@thiscrazybird88yes it was almost 2 yrs ago Oct 29 2021 that I saw Olivia the Ostrich in person at Citrus Farm in Clermont FL it was a Kodak moment for me as I stayed by the Ostrich behind a cage when I first arrived and again before I left. I had returned this May hoping to see Ostrich again I noticed it wasn't there. I emailed Citrus Farm asked what happened to Olivia the Ostrich they responded it passed away,I was very sad. I want to see Ostrich in person again so bad maybe at Brevard Zoo later this year. They're born out of egg hatch,then they grow 6-9 ft tall within a year and a half. I've been obsessed with them since 15,I'm in the end of my 40s.

Ostriches have to attack when something or someone tries to take their eggs.Even if they are being removed from the parents for safety, ostriches can be really nervous and aggressive to make sure that their chicks won’t get eaten or killed. (No hate tho)

Its all instinct and natural behaviors which is why I never take it personally. They can't help what their nature says they need to do. He's just protecting his mate and his territory. I think a lot of people forget that while they are raised by people, they are still essentially wild animals with all the instincts and behaviors that that entails.

If you mean the eggs, they taste like normal eggs, just about 32 of them to one ostrich egg 😆 If you mean the meat, they taste and cook like red meat. Very similar to a nice quality lean steak or ground beef

In our environment none of the eggs would hatch. The humidity is way too high and we'd have a bunch of giant stinky egg bombs

Ostrich eggs are very tough with lots of liquid organic mass inside. When they're dead otten, they easily turn into shrapnel bombs after some time. Best thing to do is take them and smash them somewhere safe. The smashed remains can be given to other farm animals as food.

@MrRoko they're also great for people to eat if you collect them on a daily basis. Though I incubate most of the eggs, we do eat any that have visual signs of not being viable. If they don't develop in the incubator, I break them open and feed them to our pigs. I also blow the eggs out so the shells can be used for used for art. This way, nothing goes to waste.
