As a taiko player and mapper, I can say that osu!taiko is really attached to the original game taiko no tatsujin, that's why there's plenty of "norms" and the mods are mostly based on playability stuff. I guess it's because a lot of pro players and mappers came from taiko no tatsujin. osu!standard is not the case because not every osu player came from the original osu, so they created a hole new form of game.

Being a taiko mapper/player, this is interesting to watch. I hope more people decide to pick up mapping for this mode. I also learned actually playing the mode makes a huge difference in the quality of your maps. Learning to play the game you learn common patterns that are pretty much essential to use in mapping. Take my experience of mapping over 120 maps, starting from being a 5 digit to a near 2digit.

Alright mate I wanna give you a few tips and things I've learned myself on charting taiko. Former BN and charter of 8 years here. You can interchange chart and map, but I use chart because I don't want to use "map" when talking in other RG communities lol This complement also applies to aspiring new charters. - Variety can be created in many different ways, but one of the most acceptable and widely used is through subtle rhythm or color changes. - However, copypasting is some sort of grey area, some hate it on the grounds that it's very cheap, some use it to emphasize certain parts (like a chorus), but I'd personally advise against unless you know what you're doing! - As you have realized, lots of charters make the difference between pitches to color their patterns, which is actually one of the most common "styles". However, other styles include charting with simpler patterns, focusing the coloring on the percussion, improvising patterns to complement the song instead of strictly following it, focusing on the vocal, which actually makes for a very diverse ecosystem. I could draw the parallel with osu!"standard", where some people want to focus on technique while other want to focus on aesthetics. - *Don't be scared of trying out other styles from other people.* - You don't cheat it by charting that fast. I would say that 1 hour for 4 minutes is an average even for more experienced people (I personally have a currently ranked chart that took me about 30 minutes to complete). And adapting lower difficulties is also a valid way of creating them. That's all I can offer for now, but if you have any questions I'll be answering them throughly.

This video is *hugely* inspiring to me as someone who wants to jump into mapping for osu!standard. I've got a substantial amount of experience in mapping for mania and have a solid backing in music theory, but I often find issues in trying to correlate the utilization of sliders and general fluency in structure. Seeing you jump into Taiko with what seems to be very minimal experience is awesome and it's neat that you're able to jump out of your comfort zone like that. I've had thoughts of trying to rank an all-mode map without any guest difficulties for years. By the way, I absolutely love the videos that you do.

I'd like to comment that you're not wrong with kat and don being used to contrast layers in the music, this is a perfectly valid approach to taiko charting. If you want a basic idea of my personal policy when charting taiko (I have more than like a hundred solo charts): don and kat are kinda like opposites, when a contrast in the song appears that demands a change in color, you change the color. It's kinda simple.

Mapping Taiko without playing Taiko is honestly pretty fucking insane, because if you noticed, a lot of the known mappers in the Taiko community are often also excellent players. A lot of the top players map actively and have ranked map. Mapping Taiko rely a lot on knowing how it feels to play Taiko and how you conceive the rhythm in your head while playing it. It's very important for the "Improvisation" part of mapping, and also to have a better understanding of how the dons and kats mix together at higher speed (streams/bursts) in order to create more complex rhythmic/melodic progression Honestly, you map is pretty correct from what I played/seen, but it does feel like you don't actively play the gamemode for sure, and sadly it's not a positive in this precise case (although originality/difference can be a great thing, it rarely "feels good/right" in Taiko when it gets too out of the norm, some maps still do though and those are generally my favourite because the balance is right between precise and pleasant mapping, and novelty and originality)

honestly repitition of rhythms is kindof necessary when playing rhythm games, especially a DRUM based rhythm game. drums are the foundation of music. music is fundamentally repetitive. if it feels excessively repetitive, then that's not really the mappers fault, that's the song. i have yet to map taiko but its one of my favorite game modes (well i like them all tbh), and personally my favorite taiko maps are the ones that follow the DRUMS, not the song, even if its repetitive. maybe im more suited to a game that has more elements for drums that more emulate an entire drum kit (like rockband drums for example), since there isn't a way to overlap blue and red in taiko, so you cant do a basic thing like 4 red notes as the bass drum with blue (as the hi hat) every other red note at the same time. that makes emulating even just the drums difficult, so i guess that's maybe why mapping it to highlighted parts of the song. in short, highlighting different parts of the song when it would get repetitive might be a solution to that. so if a certain section had taiko mapped to the lyrics, then that section repeats itself in the song, a different aspect of the song could be mapped during that reptition, to prevent the map itself from being repetitive. but that might run the risk of being too different from what was previously played. so maybe mapping more or less of the song, or adding improvisational flair (as more than even the song provides). idk, now im just dissatisfied with the taiko mode, oof. i guess rhythm games are by nature different from actually playing music, and even with playing music, people are usually limited to their respective instruments. and someone that does a one-man-band thing or looping also has different limitations. such is life
