Golf GTE engine rattle/knock!? Here's the FIX!

Having an annoying rattle in your Golf GTE?
I did and i have the fix!
I replaced the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) and it eliminated my noise issue.
The engine is now as silent as can be (apart from the normal injection noises).

Great video. Mine has this noise - I plan to replace the pump & the push rod / roller bearing. This is a similar arrangement to the brake pump on the VW T4 2.5 TDI van - it's driven from the camshaft & gets noisy with a bit of wear. I see Your GTE has the pan roof - that's quite a rare option in the UK, took me a while to find one ! 😎

Alle vag modellen hebben hetzelfde geluid. Dat zijn de injectoren wat je hoort tikken. Motor klinkt heel gezond. Goed dat je dat bonkende geluid weg hebt kunnen werken. Leuke video.

Yes, mine was soft and intermittent at the beginning (50.000 km). Now it was very loud and pretty much always at idle (76.000 km). No problems though, only noise!

My GTE recently did the same and I could also slightly feel the shake in the steering wheel only one time. At some point I will try and replace the HPFP, cheers!

Hey man. Toffe content, net alles gekeken. Had jij dit geluid alleen bij constant toerental/stationair? Mijne heeft het ook, zeker bij een koude motor. Bij warm alleen tussen de 900-1100 toeren. Klinkt dit herkenbaar?

Ja thanks! En ja het wordt steeds luider, ik had het eerst alleen koud en later ook met warme motor en vaker wel dan niet.. Dus blijkbaar is het toch slijtage denk ik..

The other ticking noise helps to use injector cleaner, fuel system cleaner, run high octane few times and change oil from Castrol to Mobil 1 ESP can help it, but will be back later on after xxxx km😅 But the Mobil 1 ESP 5-30 does aaa lot, on my all 1.4TSI I had and also one 2.0TDI Engine turned way silencer, less ticking & just sound better actually in general, lower oil consumption too.

I used onderdelenlijn, but keep in mind: in alot of cases the noise comes back after a while. It doesn’t hurt though, since i’ve been driving around with it since i bought the car (3,5 yrs ago) and it is still without issues. Raising the idle rpm with 50 rpm will eliminate it for 80% though, so also check into that!

Hi, i have recently changed my stock air filter by a sport air filter(Cone)on my golf gte. But the sport air filter did that the motor was verry loud( actually too loud because even in regular hybrid mode it was too loud). So i went black too stock air filter, and since that the car(even with stock air filter) is louder than before, but less loud than with the air filter. But the sound overrall has changed in my car id that normal? Thanks...

Ik heb dus precies hetzelfde probleem! Ze willen nu het vliegwiel vervangen! Maar lost dit het probleem dan wel op? Of moet ik zowel het vliegwiel als hpfp vervangen?

Nou het geluid zelf komt in sommige gevallen idd vh vliegwiel, maar dit hoor je vanwege de onregelmatige brandstoftoevoer en dus lichtelijk heen en weer gaan vd toeren. De pomp lost het dan op, omdat de motor harmonisch loopt. In andere gevallen heeft de pomp geen nut, dus als je het 100% zeker wilt weten moet je even je waardes loggen en zien of je brandstofdruk idd fluctueert als het geluid optreedt😉😉

Dat was wel redelijk snel gedaan. Bij een TDI voer je nog net geen distributieriem wissel uit, als je bij die HPFP wilt komen. Weet je wat voor pomp er op een 1.4 TSI zit? Qua merk en model pomp. Niet toevallig een Bosch CP4 toch?

Ja ging redelijk snel! Nee type weet ik niet, ik had hem van onderdelenlijn. Ook weet ik dat deze pomp meer dan 10 revisies heeft gehad, dus zou zomaar kunnen dat ik niet de nieuwste heb..

Met luchtinlaat behuizing bedoel ik dat lange rechthoekige geval voor de motor, waar het lucht wordt aangezogen.

Ik had het eerst met alleen de koude start. Na 15.000 km rijden ongeveer kreeg ik het ook met warme motor, dus hou het in de gaten!

@@ot2nie okay duidelijk. Mijn etron begon het bij 100k te produceren en zit inmiddels op 150k waarbij het nog steeds alleen bij een koude start voorkomt. Het ratelen was voorheen een paar sec, maar nu een paar min.

My warm knocking has not returned yet, so it still works for me. It is the flywheel yes, but only audible when the fuel pressure is fluctuating so the rpm is fluctuating. If your fuel pressure is stable, you won’t hear anything. People have replaced the flywheel, but the noise will just come back sooner or later.. Better to fix the fuel issues lol

When cold starting and at idle, my engine/gearbox knocks if you tap throthle.. sounds like woodpecker? Is yours similar? They change my flywheel and its same (2900€).. also hpfp is changed.

I don't know if you are still replying and I don't know where to reach you, I've been following you for a bit of time and I own an Audi A3 e-tron and I have a couple of questions if you don't mind me asking. I'm having this same sound constantly at idle when it's cold after being warm the noise goes away completely so I understand that it is normal for now right? Another thing is, for some reason the car no longer does the "cold start" like when you start the engine when the car has been sitting the whole night and it revs a little bit above 1000rpm (around 1100rpm?) Now it just idles right at 1000rpm or sometimes 950rpm and I have no idea if that's normal or not, it then goes down to 800rpm but it doesn't have that normal cold start sound, sounds like a diesel at idle, do you have any idea what this could be? Thank you for your time!

Yes, i'm still here so no worries. The sound is normal and my car has it since i bought it 3 years ago. I used a bandaid and raised the idle a bit from 750 to 800 i believe, it's like 75% less annoying then. But a fix? Don't think so, the noise is the flywheel i believe, but people have replaced it and the noise came back in a couple of weeks lol. About the cold start, maybe a difference in outside temperature? The colder it is, the longer it will run in closed loop and therefore raising the idle.

So it's safe to assume it's normal from the engine ahah that's good to know. What I mean is that the car doesn't do the normal cold start, it doesn't rev to 1200rpm when cold and then drops to idle 800rpm. What it does is it starts at 950rpm and then drops to 800rpm, and it doesn't feel like it's actually doing the normal cold start. Although when going from electric when driving to hybrid auto the engine does it normally, so I'm kinda clueless to what it is.

@@XKoxiXDuroX The car has a lot of factors in play here as to how it runs when cold. I wouldn't worry about it too much and enjoy it. I too had a lot of questions unanswered and after a long time of wondering it turned out to be just a normal routine i was unaware of, but the car had it's reasons to do it that way. Trust me, these german cars are so finnicky, if anything is out of the ordinary, you would get a check engine light.

@@ot2nie I've owned the car for 1 year and a half already and I'm still discovering news quirks that I'm realizing that it's how it's supposed to be, thank you for your replies, they actually helped me calm down a bit since I'm the hypochondriac version in cars, if something is slightly off the line, I just try to figure out what it is and I won't rest until I get some answers ahah. Also thanks to your videos I'm going to do the remap on the e-tron and further down the line put the eibach springs along with the spacers. Just another question and sorry to be so annoying, how much hp would the car get out of the remap with 95 octane fuel? My friend has a GTE and he only puts 95 in it while I've always topped mine with 98 + aditives, we did a pull just on the combustion engine, with his remaped and mine stock, there was barely any difference in it, I don't know if all he did was unlock the eletric motor or it was a full on remap. This is probably a way too difficult question to ask since there's a lot of factors involved, but I would love your input!

@@XKoxiXDuroX yes there are too many factors here to give a definitive answer. I’d say with 95, maybe 270-280 hp is possible? With 98 i’d say 300 max, but you’re stretching it then with a stage 1.

Een DSG schakelt eigenlijk sowieso minder fijn wanneer ie koud is. Wanneer was de laatste keer toen de olie was vervangen? Dit moet om de 60dkm gebeuren. Ikzelf zou het eerder doen, bij 30 of 45dkm.

Heb ik ook als het koud is, ik heb dan wel 185.000 km op de klok maar als de bak warmer wordt gaat het wel iets weg. DSG bakken zijn sowieso niet altijd de soepelste met terugschakelen.

Vooral de DSG 6 bak met natte koppeling heeft hier last van. De 7 bak met droge koppeling mag hier eigenlijk geen last van hebben

No issues here at 80.000 km. They’re generally fault-free, but there are always some exceptions. I’ve seen an GTE with almost 300.000 km on the first battery, so i wouldn’t worry too much about that, just buy one that had all the recalls done and a good service history!

The residual noise you're hearing is injection related. And the knocking noise, trust me it will come one day😝

@The Flying Dutchman ... Sorry, maar eerlijk gezegd klonk 'ie in de garage nog zachter dan dat de HPFP buiten deed. Echt ook een paar keer geluisterd naar 0:50 - 10:10 en visa versa. Ik rijdt nu in een KIA Pro-'ceed Hatchback VVTI Executive 1.6 - 16V Autom. uit 2010 en herkende ik het geluid, maar is deze niet altijd te horen als lastig te herleiden. Verder merk ik motorisch als technisch geen verschil(?!). Ooh ja, dit is geenszins bedoeld als een aanval hé kerel. Ik volg jouw vids pas recent daar ik binnenkort óók een Golf VII GTE - 204 Pk uit 2015 binnenkrijg. Je maakt leuke video's met zeer zeker handige tips als aandachtpunten, alleen niet allemaal even snel te begrijpen voor een leek. TIP: Ietwat langzamer uitleggen / praten of (soms) herhalen in 'Jip & Janneke' taal voor de wat mindere techneuten onder ons 😁🙌😉!! Groet, R@Bin

Hey maat ik denk dat ik de zelfde geluid heb een universeel garage hier bij zichtenburg heeft gezegd mijn vliegwheel zelf geloof ik het niet bij stationair hoor ik hem zodra ik ietsjes gas geef is de geluid compleet weg ben bang als ik het ga vervangen en het is het toch niet zie trouwens veel verschillen kwa die pomp wat je hebt vervangen van 80€ tot wel 400€

Ja het geluid was vrij snel weer teruggekomen, maar heb mensen gesproken die vliegwiel deden en dat het geluid binnen 10k ook weer terug was. Denk dat het een onenigheid is in het brandstofmanagement. Wat ik heb gedaan is de stationair een klein tikkie laten verhogen en daardoor was het weg. Moet je even contact opnemen met bbtuning in breda of tuning service huizen, die kennen de fix.

@@mohammedrashid7939 hahah ja ik snap je. Verschil in verbruik zal je niet echt merken, aangezien er ongeveer 50 rpm bijkomt stationair en de motor toch vaak uit is. Aftermarket pompen heb je niet voor de ea211 motor volgens mij. Een beetje van het diesel geluid hou je sowieso, omdat het een directe injectie is. Ik denk oprecht dat dit de beste oplossing is, aangezien er geen ‘echte fix’ is.

Blijft geld kosten met jou hahaha. Ik heb dit probleem dus ook en al door meerdere mensen naar laten kijken niemand wist het tot deze video dus! Is het geluid nog steeds weg? Ik wil hem ook gaan vervangen namelijk. Bij de Volkswagen garage verklaarde ze me voor gek die gingen na hun zeggen nooit kapot of geluid maken en kon het dus niet zijn..

Naja echt kapot gaat ie niet, hij wordt gewoon steeds luider! Je moet wel even onderscheid maken tussen normaal injectiegeratel en vliegwielgeratel. Deze fix lost de vliegwielratel op, omdat de brandstoftoevoer constant (weer) is en dus geen schommelingen veroorzaakt in het toerental. Het injectiegeratel blijft uiteraard, maar dat is niet op te lossen, maar kan ook geen kwaad!
