I must say I love this adapter. I got it 2 days ago and this feels premium, has the display, runs my 16” MacBook Pro with two additional external portable monitors, charges my iPhone 15 pro and small desk LED light. And the best, it’s nowhere near hot like some of the other chargers: Anker 6 in 1 or Anker 150 W. This one outside temp stays around 97F during my 8 hrs of work. Love it! At a guess, for product reviews in this category I would imagine that viewership peaks roughly aligned with major electronics sales holidays - ie the times of year that people are thinking to themselves "hey, maybe I should get a better charger, to go along with the other stuff I bought". So, maybe 3 key natural peaks in viewership per year, each peak smeared across the 3 to 7 weeks. How this mingles with the youtube algorithms adding a whole extra layer of "who the heck knows" to it, because life isn't nearly confusing enough already.

@@AllThingsOnePlace Not surprised about Anker, they do seem to be all the rage these days. Baseus are also very popular here in Poland, and I assume in other Eastern European countries as well. Then there's Apple - reviewing their ecosystem should attract some views I'm sure. Still, I think you have a great mix of brands and types. I've never tried dabbling in the KZbinr lifestyle, but I assume that in the review business, you either have integrity, standards and a dedicated (if small) following, or you become a hype reviewer that might get a million views, but has the integrity and trust of a highway billboard.

It's very odd that this is missing the safety listing. If you throw the Vina part number (PD-085PT) into the Intertek search for listed products you'll actually find a certification for it; it's UL-62368-1. Maybe they had to revise the internals (substituted components due to lack of part availability, etc.) and the change requires recertification?
@AllThingsOnePlace

I am not sure, it could be something as simple as Vina offers two versions, one with a certified part (transformer for example) for $2 more and one with a non-certified part for a little less.

Sorry about the viewership drop, hopefully that goes up! Also, as far as 100W adapters go - what would you recommend? My requirements are Samsung super-fast charging & USB C ports (which, I haven't done enough research of my own, but I think that's implied?) I also really love the extension cord used to plug this product in, so if you have a recommendation with that feature, that's definitely a nice-to-have; available space on a power strip always seems to be limited because of plug / adapter design 😅

Mate the content across your channel is a lifesaver. I've been trying to downscale the number of bricks I've got powering my consoles and a number of other devices hooked up to my tv. I've managed to scale quite a few things down in my setup, with power delivery/efficiency being the last hurdle. Silly question, but is it possible with this type of usb power supply to attach a multi usb hub to one of the ports, assuming you only turn on one device at once? Or would that cause some problems? I've been doing this off my tv for the longest time with low powered devices, but for the high power consumption ones I am a bit curious. In my situation I'm not trying to charge anything, more just provide a constant power supply.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 10 ай бұрын
It all comes down to voltages. If you need 5V then you can use a hub. If you need higher voltages then it gets trickier to find products that will work. PD passthrough or something. I've seen laptop hubs with one passthrough port then a bunch of 5V ports. Other than that I am not sure anything exists yet.

KZbinrs often say today to smash that like button. But in this case, the Otao 200w adapter wants you to slap that PQS sticker on there, yep, its a kinky rectifier. At the end of the day, this is a pretty awesome power adapter, that actually surprised me. With the previous stuff you've tested, I just wasn't prepared for something to be this good, all bit it not perfect of course. They should have spent more to get it safety listed. And they should have done something about that strange idle consumption. Plus, I am not a fan that it is playing musical PFC, while running the screen. Just turn on the PFC and keep it on, there's no reason not to. Like you said, this power adapter is almost perfect, I am mostly impressed here. But for now, maybe just buy two Baseaus 100W adapters I guess.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
I don't mind the skipping PFC, that keeps power consumption low in idle states. Actually, it's good to turn it off if it's doing nothing, but then when it needs to be on just turn it on. I have an extreme example of that gone wrong though in an upcoming video, a very sick PFC circuit that uses maximum AC line power, then none. This adapter will probably require further investigation eventually. Tear it down maybe, but I know it's going to be difficult to get inside this thing so I will avoid that for as long as possible or never, ha.

They got so close, so unfortunate. What I mostly dislike is the load temperature. Not critical but I still don't like companies banking on the fact that a device is not charging 24/7. Noise it's alright but maybe the expectation of working with bench power supplies and good computer power supplies sets my expecations too high. Great video as usual!
@stellarproductions8888
@stellarproductions8888 Жыл бұрын
Hello Tommy! With these power adapters getting larger, and outputting more power then they ever did before, and the increased heat generation, you'd think that they would install a fan in there. Or at the very least, a copper heat sink, for heat dissipation. There is a reason why computer CPU's, have an heat sink and fan on them to cool them, cause they get freaking hot, much like how these modern power adapters do. I think these companies need to stop protecting the status quoe, and start actually innovating. And one last thing, get their power adapters safety listed and properly certified too.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Well said, and ditto. I could take or leave a fan but it really depends on design. Although this one being physically large and only dissipating 13-16 watts full load, it can do the job without getting too hot.

When companies offer these for free they come with caveats like I basically can't make any part of the video the way I want. No one will pay a channel of 10k subs to make a video. Free thing exchange for video made exactly how the manufacturer wants. I don't know how other youtubers take product then say whatever they want and don't mark paid promotion, any offers I've seen come with a script and a no data allowed clause. Any free item is a paid promotion, that is also a sponsor.

This video is actually the best performer in a long time of course. Goes to show still no idea what I am doing, which is good. Yeah, the power stations have been on the list for a while now. I need to figure out how to get stuff at no cost because power stations are substantially more expensive items and I am out of pocket to get anything on this channel. I do a short bit on the display. It’s about 2% off on channel 1, not bad at all really. I should’ve spent more time on it. I have more footage of it. Maybe I will upload that as a short though. I do have a P.O. Box but I have yet to use it, ha. If you send the model I’ll try to get one.

@@AllThingsOnePlace Sounds good, I'm looking forward to the short. Also, the model is AUKEY Omnia 100W 2-Port PD Charger PA-B6. It is an older model from 2021~ and since Aukey was kicked off Amazon, they seem to have liquidated their existing inventory through other websites like Groupon (you'll find it for $10 on this site). I bought one and have been using it but am curious about its power capabilities and overall quality.

The power bank I think I reviewed. The screen flickered so bad, I had to turn the shutter speed down to like 2 fps to get stable footage of it. So I tried not to show it as much as possible. I did a usb cable with a display in it as part of one of the usb cables videos. No idea which one. I will have more adapters with displays though. Ouch, that's a lot of devices. That's a big wish list and unfortunately I think a lot of the devices that make claims of being able to do all of that at once, don't. OR not for long at least before they break or overheat... So, it sounds like you need 1 USB C PD in, 1 USB C PD out (45 watts), plus go pro charging (5V-1A), and then another battery charger (assuming 5V-1A also). I'd almost go Anker 737 power bank then a USB A splitter. So, 100W PD in (charging and pass through), 45W PD out, then USB A with a splitter to the two camera battery chargers? Assuming each stays under 1 amp each at 5 volts. I think the Baseus Blade drops to PD 30W during passthrough mode, but does have two USB A ports. Note, if the camera is always powered via USB (no internal battery) it will shut off when you plug and unplug the power into the camera. So, not a hot swap solution.

When I plug any USB-C to Lightning cable into a multi-port USB PD charger, it behaves as if a load was connected to the Lightning side - even when it’s dangling in the air. For example when connecting a Lightning cable to USB-C3/4 on the Ugreen Nexode 200W charger, the 100 W ports USB-C1/2 will negotiate 65 W max. Leaving open USB-C to USB-C cables plugged into any ports won’t impact the available PDOs. Any idea what’s going on? My google foo has failed me so far.

@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Yeah, in this case they did that, the first port is essentially isolated from the other four. But to do 3 USB C ports at 100W each totaling 300W is wasteful and probably will overheat in a small package. Most people, and most devices can get by with less than 30 watts. I have seen (and I have one) an adapter with all separate power ports. Mostly lower wattage, not useful though, also that thing is unquestionably cutting corners in the safety department, video coming soon.

Could you elaborate on why you would *not* want your adapter to be referenced to ground?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 19 күн бұрын
Here's a long and ramble, maybe at times coherent, reply! There are numerous camps on this front, some say earthing is bad in products and there's a better way to do everything some say more should be earthed, but in reality it comes down to whatever is written in the various safety standards which are intended to mitigate risk as much as financially viable. It depends on the product construction and how earth is connected. Metal bodied products are often required to be directly connected to earth, also products sensitive to buzzing, guitar amps for example, the input is directly connected to earth, meaning the guitar is directly connected to earth, meaning your body is earth referenced which helps quiet the noise from the instrument. There are other ways to do this of course. Faults before the product, for example, the earth line failing between the device and the earth electrode or bonding point, is a reason for less earthing, a fault in the earth system itself could cause the product to become live at line voltage in the case of a fault condition occurring. This is where a RCD or GFCI would be useful as it would detect the current returning through an alternate path, most likely your body, without a ground wire being present. Also, there are techniques to create low leakage power adapters, often at the cost of efficiency, but for sensitive applications these further separate the device from any mains connection, medical devices. So, that's the reason why not to have earth involved.
@NicksStuff
@NicksStuff 19 күн бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace I don't think I get it. In the case of a failure between the device and the earth electrode or bonding point...you end up with a non-earthed device. So earthing it didn't make it more dangerous.

What safety am I giving up with this?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 5 ай бұрын
It is all risk management. Lacking the listing presents a higher risk of damage to you the user, nothing is perfect but some do better than others. The safety standards may overreach a bit, a lot, but they do provide some pretty crucial tests that help keep the user safer, they don't test for operation or make the device good necessarily, just safer, again risk mitigation, not elimination. Some things that generally are included in safety work: electrical isolation from the mains to your body, weeding out potentially dodgy components that can cause shorts between you and the mains, temperature regulations, requirement of non-flammable plastics, consistent component choice, and many more things. Some that don't have a listing are good, some that don't are bad, real bad, the problem is with no listing you don't know.

@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 4 ай бұрын
I do open them up occasionally. In general the ones I've opened that don't have some kind of safety mark are terrifying, the ones that do are acceptable. This is a middle ground in that this manufacturer (vina) generally does have safety listings for the products but Otao chose not to use it? Interesting is the EU ones, which rarely have safety listings as they allow self declaration, the Hama and Cellular line had safety in mind in design, but the Essager wouldn't meet the requirements. Sometimes I don't show the teardown on camera but do it still. I don't tear all of them down. But anyway, it doesn't matter a whole lot as even the good ones of these are generally not good as they're all built down to a price, now that is a future video or several.
