Amazing interview. Couldn't be more happy to have found this channel! You were pointed, and deliberate, and in telling his story allowed Tyler to see genuine support for clean behavior. In America I believe "living in they grey" areas has eroded what should be healthy activities. There is virtually no sport that doesn't have dangerously driven athletes that end up crossing lines. Some of the sports however, curiously have noticeable lack of these failing moments, and you can't help but wonder if it isn't simply the institutions protecting the scheme more sophisticatedly.

It's kind of annoying that people treat Lance Armstrong like he invented doping. I'm not saying the guy's a saint, but guys were doping for years before Lance came along. David Walsh makes it seem like Lance was the only guy who had the perfect drug program. If it's so easy to dope and win, how come other guys didn't win more often? There has to be more to it than just doping.

Blood doping through extraction had been known since at least the 1970's. It was common enough practice by European long distance runners and even talked about quite openly during the '72 and '76 Olympics. I even remember the announcers talking about the feats of Lasse Viren and the rumors of his blood doping. Yes, back in those days it was talked about quite openly. It was not even against the rules back then. Why it took 30 years to outlaw this in cycling is a bit beyond me. There always has been and always will be certain people who will engineer new and improved ways to get better performance. I believe what we saw in cycling in the early 2000's will be infantile to what we will see in the future. Will genetic manipulation be a part of that? I would like to believe the majority of today's riders are clean and they probably are with the rules that are in place today. But technology will always outpace the testing and rules. It will be interesting to see what some of the best cyclists in the world today are doing to get their winning performances. Perhaps we will know in 10 more years?

Considering the times haven’t changed since the “doping era” do you really think everyone is clean? If people were only using performance enhancing substances/ways for a decade or two there should be a jump on the graph for fastest times. Then it should come back down similarly to before the doping decades. Human evolution and bike technology hasn’t evolved that much.

There’s scientists making compounds that are undetectable. Look at the BALCO case. If the guy didn’t get greedy he or his athletes would’ve never been caught. Imagine how many other cases there of this going on. There’s just too much money and glory on the line to not try to cheat. The riders are getting faster and faster and I think we all know why. Very few tested positive even when everyone was doped, and uci and tour officials, team directors, doctors,etc had no reason to turn anyone in because it benefits everyone. Lance may not be the best judge,however, he never ever even implied he was very worried about getting caught. Nothing has changed, and doping wise nothing will change. Enjoy it and watch it, and hopefully it still makes you excited to ride and even race. If it doesnt ,then don’t watch, and dont waste time on it.

Electric motors are everywhere. Cycling is nascar or formula one. They choose the riders to win based on market demographics and areas for expansion. If your kid is korean or african he will be pushed to get many wins. Those are the expanding markets. If he's white american nobody cares, and he won't win because he won't expand the market.

I hold no judgement towards any of them (Lance as well, especially Lance) but I've always liked Tyler as a man wholesale. Great guy! I do truly believe that it'd help everyone involved and people that weren't. Kids wanting to get into sports today can't be niave. I don't think they are and that might be worse because they're already thinking about it. Plus, public education on things like testosterone would help out men who are on it not be stigmatized. I know a large group of vets that their lives have been DRAMATICALLY effected in all positive ways by taking it yet if they dare talk about it automatically they're seen as "doping". Lance just did a podcast with Attia that was pretty good. It's kinda is what made me start watching these again.

2:35, Magnolia Rd., S side of Boulder Canyon, east of Nederland, CO. I met Tyler very briefly about '95 just after he bought a home two doors down from mine in Ned. He told me he raced bicycles for Postal and I thought he meant the post office! I had no idea who he was. Kind of embarrassing to look back on that moment. I'm in the process of reading his book now and am about ¾ of the way through. Excellent book for anyone not understanding the challenges faced by someone who wants to become a champion bike racer. It is a stressful, painful, brutal endeavor, both physically and mentally. I'm guessing all those strings around his left wrist have some meaning.

Lance is still lying. The most important question he has never answered is WHEN DID YOU START DOPING? I am sure that he started doping with steroids in his late teenage years. Gian Paolo Zanconato - Netflix had an interesting review of Marco Pantani, but painted him as a victim of the culture. There's some truth to it, it predated MP & LA, but Lance fully embraced it more than others. Johan Bruyneel, Eddie, Borysewicz, Chris Carmichael, ..... have been pretty silent. Lance had MANY supporters who were complicit. It took a cast of characters for him to succeed. This includes up to UCI, they benefitted for the Lance story/hype too.

I don't think they used motors at that point, I believe any and all pharma products and methods were used without a doubt but I don't think motors were in use at that point and if they were the tech was probably not advanced enough to hide without easily being found out for a number of reasons. Non-cheaters should be at the top of all sports but fans are just as much to blame because they want results and to get results you have to cheat, at least at this level. Something that gets overlooked is so obvious. If it is a positive quality for each blood cell to carry more oxygen why don't they? It makes the blood thicker and harder to pump. This results in larger hearts to handle the increased pressure required, but at night when there there is no no need for the blood delivery required during the day, the heart beats much slower and tends (sometimes) to stop. Abusers of EPO tend to die in their sleep - Marco Pantani comes to mind.

Velonews and Wikipedia have been quoted along with the Italian paparazzi/news organizations not to mention that his autopsy confirmed that he died of "acute cocaine poisoning" in 2004, was he a known habitual abuser of the Bolivian marching powder I don't know. But he was dogged for a long while about PED use.

Sadly, Marco Pantani died from an overdose after suffering depression after getting caught doping causing a high hematocrit level. But a lot of people in the bike sports have been killed in their sleep by thick blood due to epo and whatever else. As a forensic psychologist, after watching this I can see that Tyler Hamilton makes every excuse in the book for his lying, cheating and stealing behavior. He clearly wants to be famous and love for being the "penitent cheater" just as much as he was willing to lie and cheat in order to achieve success in cycling. Tyler, you need a lot of therapy with a clinician who has a lot of experience in dealing with offenders. Your victim stancing is pretty odious to watch. Get some good treatment before you start standing up in front of groups (who are interested in you only because you cheated) and spend time blaming others for your behavior.

Yes, Sean, I am just that fella! I was amazed at how much his presentation resembled that of unrecovered offenders I have dealt with in correctional settings for decades; conning, excuse-making, projecting. Truth is, he would be a lot more happy, probably, if he chose to take responsibility for his egregious actions and move on as an honest person, one day at a time. And BTW, truth-witnessing is not self-righteousness, it is simple authenticity, even if one is a sinner.

Better bike technology and improved training methods have improved performance over time. Not sure if Pogacar is juiced but I think a top tier (clean) team leader today would beat Lance in his heyday, given advancements in equipment and training protocols

@@nengnengnengable no. Just no. Lance stated he could go about 450-470 watts for ~45 min. That is pretty hefty considering he pushes about 6.5-7 w/kg for that time. Give his then performance a new bike and he likely mobs the floor with pogacar :x
