I really like the way the vet works with Bella. She shows gentleness and confidence. Which helps with scared horses.
@leonslionessnz69484 жыл бұрын
Bella did well. She is coming along. She is very gentle for a frightened feral horse. She would rather just run away than do something nasty. The wild ones are very protective of their hind legs. I suspect it is because the predators grab them by the ham strings to bring them down. I follow Elisa Wallace on youtube she tames mustangs and all her wild ones were very protective of their hind legs just like Bella is. When you win her over and gain her confidence she will be a loyal filly indeed. All the mares are when they bond with their owners. I like the vet. Very calm and gentle. Calm and gentle people make for calm and gentle horses.

Morning, Tara! Watching you and Bella reminds me of the first few years with my rescued standard poodle, who’d had no human contact and was raised in a barn with goats.We got him when he was 4 1/2 months old; those first few months are so important for a puppy in terms of exposure to other experiences, people etc. He’d had none of those. The usual noises in the house terrified him. To say he was was afraid of his own shadow is an understatement! He knew we loved him, chose to be brave (like Bella) and over time, learned to trust us. It seemed slow going at times but 10 years later, he is the best dog I’ve ever had. The most loyal, gentle and loving boy! We got a puppy companion for him when he was 5 and he’s mentored/nurtured that puppy better than a female! All to say, I’m celebrating every achievement with you and Bella. She’s a lovely girl with what looks to be great temperament. Have fun, Tara! PS Best to Rens & Steve, too! (I do miss Apollo & Farouk...)

What was with taking her hand away and then putting it back? Most people I know just consistently hold the halter and/or pet stroke the neck or face? Maybe that's because the people I know work with several horses on any given day..?

That vet is brave and gentle. Bella was so good about having that mouth thing on her. Such a big change for Bella to have left her mom and be in this strange new world. Her breeder did her no favours in not teaching her basic manners. Tar you are proceeding very well. Good luck.

The vet was wonderful with her x
@larinvermont32714 жыл бұрын
One point for your side! When the vet first approached her, Bella moved towards you as a point of safety! Even the smallest give is a definite improvement. However, Bella's kick was a surprise. I also like your vet - she knows what she's about.
@pipr50704 жыл бұрын
I think given how this filly was probably handled by the “breeder”, I’m not surprised that she kicked out. This is a typical reaction to having a rope tied to their legs.
@yvonnerahmes96184 жыл бұрын
@@pipr5070 really this is unfair, Bella is a yearling and having had little handling is unused to having her legs/body touched in any way. It does NOT indicate that she's had a rope tied to her legs... Making this kind of statement with no basis in fact is wrong, and can be hurtful in any situation...
@pipr50704 жыл бұрын
Yvonne Rahmes you have a point. However, from my own background with skittish unhandled or previously poorly handled horses, this is a typical defence behaviour.
@larinvermont32714 жыл бұрын
@@pipr5070 You're partially right, but I would disagree about the breeder "handling" Bella - kicking is the instintctive primary equine defensive behavior. And in this case, Tara has what is basically a feral filly that she and Rens are working with. What has surprised me is that Bella has not exhibited any kicking behavior before, even though her body language has screamed that she was prepping to do so. Tara has been very courageous in continuing to work closely with Bella, and I think Bella has recognized Tara's caring and been very restrained in her responses. You notice that Bella didn't really try to take a swipe at the vet, either. I'd worked with horses since I was very young, and would have been much more hesitant than Tara has been in handling that filly. Tara, on the carrot question, if Diablo likes carrots, and is visible to Bella, try tempting Bella through the companion grate and then give it to Diablo. If Bella sees Diablo chewing down, she may try the first one through the grate. By the same token, when you reach the point you can put Bella out, I think you may need to put Diablo with her to show her how to eat grass [if she's never been grazed, she won't realize it's edible]. If you had an older mare, I would normally use her, but I don't think the Big Boys would be too tolerant with a feral filly.
@pipr50704 жыл бұрын
Adriel I guess the sarcasm of my use of the word “handled” didn’t come through. Horses that haven’t been handled don’t necessarily take a swipe at people. Horses, like other unhandled animals can for the most part be curious. I suspect that she senses that Tara, Rens and Steve mean no harm and therefore she’s willing to give them a chance. Tara knows what she’s doing, and showed that by respecting that Bella doesn’t like pats, but strokes and found the magic happy scritch spot on the wither.
@pennywebb8674 жыл бұрын
Couldn't help but think that Diablo was saying to her, "Oh, don't be such a drama queen. You should have seen what they took away from me!" 😄🤣😄 But didn't she do well? I agree with Lars, she turned to you for comfort when vet first arrived and that is a wonderful sign. She is such a beauty and your patience and gentleness will pay off in the end. You have years before you need to worry about more than the basic manners and attachment. Looking forward to seeing the big boys. You have your hands full don't you? How lucky are these 4? My heart goes out to Bella. She is remarkably not aggressive despite being afraid. Had I been in Bella’s place, I would have bitten the vet and kicked and reared. You've done so well with her so far, she needs handling so you can have the vet to her, be able to have a halter on her, be able to lead her, be able to pick up her feet, ALL of these things you are doing need to be done. Her feet need doing, you know that. Good lord Tara imagine the mess she would be in if you left her in a field as the experts told you "with her mummy and herd to be a baby for a few years", jeepers, she'd be a worm ridden, scrawny, wild thing with bad feet. Not far from how she was when you first got her. The breeder has done a great injustice to her, I am so glad she is with you Tara.

I agree. I don’t know why there isn’t a registration system for horse breeding, like you have for dogs with the Kennel Club. That way people will encouraged to breed responsibly and buyers would have more knowledge and information about what they’re buying!
@C.Woodford3 жыл бұрын
@@KD-wm5po mind you, I wouldn't say the kennel club is very responsible. Up until a few years ago they allowed, even promoted inbreeding with father-daughter and mother-son pairs. All the dogs they licence are so severely inbred and have so many illnesses and deformities. They breed king Charles spaniels to have a small skull "to fit the breed standard" and it leaves them with a skull that is too small for its brain and they develop syringomyelia, which leaves them in excruciating pain for the rest of their life. But yes I understand what you mean, I think we do need some sort of classification system or licencing so they have to be vetted and can check at any time their welfare.

Hi Tara, The visit from the vet went well, the seems very calm and competent. Bella is nervous and fearful but she has come a long way in a short time with you working with her. My dog was nervous when we got her. She was purchased from a breeder with a lot of dogs. Not a puppy mill as the conditions were very clean but I don't think there was time for each dog to get a lot of individual attention from humans. She has become the most loyal, loving and calm dog. A real sweetie and I think Bella will turn out this way, especially once the has her spa days and brushing. She will adore you. Re: the breeder I don't think the husband did much with the horses to help out. Didn't he say when he unloaded Bella it was the first time he handled her? Look forward to each new video.

Every successful vet visit will increase Bella's confidence and trust. Some day when there's a real emergency, she will have learned to seek relief from people. I could always tell when my mare was improving, because she would stand still for the vet and get frisky when she was feeling better. She knew that people would care for her. Heard of a man with a "kicky" horse who braided a heavy rope into her tail and left it alone. EVERY time the horse kicked, the rope gently thumped the horse. It happened where or not people were around so the horse didn't associate the reaction to something people did. Eventually it quit kicking with no muss or fuss.

So glad that Bella is now with you. Your loving care and patience will make all the difference in the world. Baby steps every day and she is making great progress. Thought she did very well with the vet, who was calm and kind while examining and treating her. Take care.

Wow Tara, wonderful progress with Bella! I just loved seeing her turn to you for comfort. Wonderful vet, she certainly knows her stuff. Very good idea desensitizing her hind legs while still sedated, it will stick in her memory, I'm sure. I am impressed to see Bella in a normal halter, and that you could be in the stall with her sans halter and lead rope. So enjoying this journey with you, thank you for sharing. PS Why didn't anybody tell you your zipper was down? No harm done, just teasing! LOL ;)

She did really well with the vet, once she was tranquilized she was much better with getting her teeth floated. Since she is so zoomed out while your touching her legs, not kicking at you. She is a beautiful young girl. You have a great vet who is quiet, understanding & compassionate. Great qualities.

It’s so funny to me that little Diablo is next door chomping and chewing away the whole time and watching the goings on with Bella through the window like he is watching a tv show and thinking “wow this is good entertainment”. I cannot believe how far you have ALREADY come in getting Bella to let you touch her head and put on the head gear. You have the patience of a saint, which is just what this little filly needs. Good on you Tara
