Colleen saying “if I ever go on tour again” and Erik correcting to “when you do” made me tear up 🥹 Love how supportive he is always🥰
@amandat6082 ай бұрын
I get Erik's point. In the alternative, rebellious culture of our youth, we feared looking like a "poser." It was thought that someone wearing the band shirt to the concert is a "poser" trying to show that they're a fan, while true fans don't have to wear the shirt to prove anything.
@sarahjayneroe88592 ай бұрын
I wear stuff to concerts, movies, theme parks, etc. But I agree with Erik on his arguments against it. It's cringey and dorky and I'm just happily aware I am those things. Colleen, you're always saying how things are "vibes" (like days of the week feeling like certain colors), so why does Erik have to give you a factual reason why for some occasions it's acceptable and some it's cringey, when he's clearly just going off his vibes too? I totally get what he's saying, and I don't care if people think I'm cringey if my goal is just to have fun, and you can also think it's not cringey, that's fine too. Things are cool and not cool, that's just the way the world works.🤷♀️

I listen to metal and it is considered a faux pas to buy merch at a concert and then wear it. Some people think it represents being a fake fan. Wearing a band T from an older tour etc. is fine though…but honestly just wear what you want, people who care too much about silly things don’t matter.

As someone in a band that has traveled all over, it is definitely an unspoken rule to not wear a band’s shirt to the show. I think it’s because if you’re there at the show that means you’re a supporter, whereas if you’re at a sporting event you wear the team’s merch that you’re rooting for because there are 2 different teams so you’re showing the team and others there which one you’re supporting. I think the point of merch, especially with smaller bands, is to show other people who may not know about the band or find that other person out and about that likes the same band you like. So it’s less so that you can’t wear the band shirt to the show, it’s moreso PLEASE wear it out and about! If you’re smiling out at us out in the audience, we know you’re a supporter!

As someone from Canada, I’ve noticed that Erik’s way of pronouncing words is pretty much how we speak here. Where as what Colleen says is definitely how we think “Americans” speak. Maybe due to proximity to Connecticut. but I’ve even noticed this when Erik talks about his highschool experience, it’s quite similar to what we experience here in Ontario. Geography is cool!
@sp00kyMerBabe2 ай бұрын
I know what Erik is referring to with the band tees, and regardless of if it’s right or wrong I DO remember that being sort of an unspoken “rule.” If I had to try and explain why it might be considered seen as “cringy” or a faux pas, it’s because in that particular music scene/culture it was not cool to come across as a “super-fan” or a “try-hard” as Erik was saying. Basically to wear a shirt from the preforming band would come across as attention getting and trying to get everyone to know that you were really into that band, so instead people would usually wear like shirts of other bands from the same genre. 🤘🤓

It might be cringey to wear a band shirt to a punk band vs Taylor Swift because there's an element of camaraderie in a TS concert & a sports game, while a punk band is more about individuals. Also maybe more emphasis on being cool.

I think the word Erik needed to explain here was “poser.” When you wear a band shirt to their concert (especially indie/alternative music) you look like you are trying to prove you are a fan. “Posing” as a fan if you will. The theory is a true fan doesn’t need to prove they are a fan (hence the “try-hard” commend Erik made.) One of the meanest things you could be called when I was in that scene in middle school was a “poser.”

I fully understand what Erik is trying to say with wearing merchandise. It is not cringy or embarrassing nowadays. Everyone should wear whatever they want like colleen said BUT there has been a cultural shift in that. In sports all my life people have worn merchandise - it is what it is no change there. When you looked or look in a stadium most people wear it, rarely anyone wore or wears everyday clothes. For art things it was considered not appropriate and in some areas still is and concerts and pop cultures have changed that but in Vienna, Austria you would never ever see anyone go with merchandise to an opera or musical - you go there with really fancy clothes. You would not even be let in in jeans or merch. That's because it was something reserved to wealthy society in the past while sports was not. Some sports were for workers class only so the background and history of those things is totally different. And while I agree with colleen that nowadays it can be compared as areas of passion - it is not fair to discredit or say that the history of those is the same because it is not..In the 90s, earls 2000s only hard-core, cringy fans wore merch t-shirts to concerts, everyone else would dress normal or fancy (like for tswift :)) and get the merch for home and to show around. Nowadays way more people wear merch but I feel like they wear it less in everyday life. Again not saying nowadays it's not appropriate or smth wrong with it. It's just the history and how we grew up and how our society and changes within are represented

We use cling wrap to wrap up a Christmas ball. It is a game where each person can unwrap this ball full of layers of saran wrap and little candy or trinkets and money. The person next to them rolls two die and when they get a pair the ball is passed to them to the left. The dice is also passed to the left and so on until the ball is all unwrapped. The saran wrap is not one long piece. It is piece after piece. You are not allowed to rip the saran wrap. You must unwrap piece after piece. You get to keep what falls out of the "ball" during your turn. It's frantic and fun!

In regards to the ideology of the band shirt. If you wear band merch at all. In more niche genres of music, wearing another artists shirt (especially tour merch) to a show, is kind of like a badge of validity (like you are well versed in that style of music. And are a part og that scene, as opposed to having heard one song on the radio and then hit the merch booth before entering the concert.) I feel that this is the primary belief behind concert attire. And in regards to why wearing sports jerseys to games is done without question. It is because it is a direct competition where you are expected to show your support. The crowd also is a huge part of the spectacle and seeing a team's colors in the crowds shows where the support is. Likewise I feel like if you went to a battle of the bands you would obviously wear the merch of the band you were supporting. No opinions on it either way, just bringing up some points that may have been overlooked.

I have so many opinions. I say expeeeriment and honestly it should probably be experiment but whatever. Secondly, I don’t feel that strongly about whether it’s right or wrong to wear a band tee to a concert but it’s DEFINITELY not the same as wearing a jersey to a sports game. There are two sides at a sporting event and you’re showing who’s side your on when wearing their colors/jersey etc. but if you want to wear a Jim Gaffigan shirt to his show and look like a stalker, you go for it 😂😅 jk jk everyone should wear what makes them happy. Wearing a fan shirt/merch shows you're keen or extra excited. Some people don't want to SHOW that to others, because they don't want to be judged. This seems like an insecurity. They're thinking about how others feel before their own feelings. Cringe is what we feel when embarrassed, uncomfortable, or disgusted. It's an internal response to an external situation. If you don't feel free to do something based on what others might be feeling, that reflects your own inner program of insecurity ("others may not like me" or "I might not be accepted," etc.). I think most of us have some cringe-based inner programs that keep us from experiencing joy sometimes.

I'm often aligned with Eric , but on wearing "merch clothing" of the sport team , movie or theater characters you are going to watch, I'm with Colleen: the are the same!! In my opinion is a fan thing, and the most enthusiast fans wear clothing of the even or team they are going to watch, not not all people watching the sport match or move or theater wear the "March clothing". It's true that is more frequent in sport events (at the venue), but that only showns that sport match attendees are often more "fanatic" than those watching a movie , a play or a concert. lol probably the competivenes in sports accentuated the need for fans to difference themselves and show their colors, to differentiate from the other team.... but the same goal have the movie, play and concert attendees: they want to make sure everyone knows they are not regular watchers, but that they are super Fans! And to be proud of your identity, when not hurting nor denying the identity of others, is healthy , nice and creates social bonding amongst keen people. they motives are the same: a fan/l or a "group identity" thing. :) By the way, i love who painfulness, silliness and respect you truly show in your genuine discussions. It's a balanced playful beakering! I'm so happy for you both. What a nice pieces of Eric, who used to be so camera shy. thanks for sharing your thoughts and conversation style.

I'm sorry I agree with Erik here that there are certain music genres where it's just a faux pas to wear that particular band, usually with indie/rock ish stuff, it's just not done, there's just some unspoken rule that people abide by. It's kinda crazy that these same people could be at another genre of music concert and it's totally fine or equally go to a sports game etc, but the rule is almost the opposite there. Thinking about it, I guess it might also tie in with the fact it's usually the same kind of bands that people wear the band t-shirts and don't know their music, like there's just a lot of weight in wearing this band t-shirts and there a particular rule around it. It's nice that some places that the rule doesn't apply though!

I have absolutely no issues if people wear a concert shirt to a concert a movie shirt to a movie dress according to the concert like if it’s a country concert dress country or if they wear a jersey to a sports game I just personally don’t do that just because I don’t like materials of concert shirts, and jerseys and stuff. And depending who I’m going to the concert with, I might listen to the music before the concert or I might not cause, maybe I might just wanna talk on the way to the concert and not listen to music who knows Eric is wrong. Anybody can wear whatever they want and it’s not cringe at all.

I think you are both right. Erik is referring to smaller bands not massive artists like Taylor. If you’re going to see a small/local band and you’re wearing their shirt it’s almost creepy in a way almost stalker-ish, to me. But if there are massive amounts of fans and they are all wearing it, it’s different. Anyway, im with Eric on this one larger bands it’s fine but with smaller ones I’m not saying you can’t wear it but just know you will stand out. And when you are asking him why it’s cringe is like asking why skinny jeans are out of style now. The answer is because it is. It’s as simple as that. Nobody knows why it’s cringe and why skinny jeans are now out of style. There isn’t one particular person that decides this and now we all have to follow. It is cringy because it is. It’s a simple as that.
