For anyone hearing PT for the first time, if you're a lover of Floyd/Rush/Genesis/Yes and any of the other prog-rock greats, do yourself a favor and jump in head first with this band. I've been a superfan since discovering them in '02 and they've become my favorite band, replacing Rush. I realize that's a bold statement. But if you don't give them a 20 song listen before deciding, you'll be depriving yourself of one of the modern greats. Steven Wilson, the singer and band leader, is a world-respected engineer, and Gavin Harrison, the band's second drummer, is considered the best drummer in the world right now. These guys have worked with Yes, King Crimson, The Pineapple Thief, and many others. Find everything PT and Wilson do, and you'll have a huge new catalogue to fall in love with. I'd love to have you come back here and tell me personally what you think. I've turned 30 or so friends on to this band and they ALL have thanked me. You will too.

Yes. PT, Stephen Wilson. And Gavin Harrison! I’m also a fan of The Pineapple Thief and King Crimson ... and Gavin is a common factor to all. I requested The Pineapple Thief track, “In Exile” that cracks to a start with Gavin’s drumming. Funny to realize that Steven is singing, “Don’t hate me.” “In Exile” contains a lyric, “Don’t be afraid to hate me.” Thanks for your comment. ✨🤪

A good alternative version of this song on Steven Wilsons 4 1/2 album, where he shares vocals with Ninet Tayeb who has provided vocals on quite a few SW tracks.

Totally agree about the 4 1/2 version of this song featuring Ninet Tayeb. Everything I hear with Ninet I seem to love. Her solo work is also worth checking out. Even her albums in Hebrew which I don't understand a word of I enjoy. Heck I don't even know the names of any of those songs so it is hard to recommend any of those songs but her album & song called Paper Parachute is worth a listen. Also a video of her & the Red Band performing a song called Crazy is a must watch.

I became a fan of PT around 2003, after hearing songs like "Stars Die" and "Waiting". Each phase of the band's development has its own style and every album is unique and great ... Especially worth mentioning are the albums Up the Downstair (1993) and The Sky Moves Sideways (1995) on which the band oriented itself towards the psychedelic rock of the seventies. Then Sygnify from 1998, where the style gradually changed to rock music, via Supid Dream and Lightbulb Sun, elements of Britpop were processed among other style elements here, up to In Absentia and Deadwing, where the band also oriented towards heavy metal ... a incredible back catalog with great songs on every album. When Gavin Harrison joined the Band in 2002, they won i.m.h.o. the world's best drummer (beside Neal Peart R.I.P.). Hear the incredible drumming of Gavin on the song "Anesthetize" on the album Fear Of A Blank Planet (2007). Anesthetize is my wish for a new reaction video. I like your great work! Greetings from Switzerland.

Nick & Lex, this is PT in their Pink Floyd era. Saying it's their Pink Floyd era is not a negative because they still make the music their own. PT doesn't have a bad era for their music nor is there a bad album. PT is one of those rare bands where you can put on any album and not want to skip songs. For me PT has the best blend of 70's progressive and contemporary prog. What I appreciate most about PT is they let you breathe. Even in their most heavy prog metal era (most notably In Absentia) they have great harmonies (Trains, Darkest Eyes for examples) and rich melodies woven in with the heavy parts. I have a difficult time often listening to metal prog because there's no real let up or if there is a breathable passage it's accompanied by growling or in your face vocals, I need air in my music along with grit and PT is the epitome of both IMHO. As always another great job and keep loving each other. HAPPY 4th!
@TFOLLT3 жыл бұрын
Lol you worded perfectly why I rate Riverside and Porcupine Tree higher than any other band. I love grid, I love heavyness. I love progmetal. But progmetal can be a lot, like a whole lot. I love the grid, but I need the air; the pauses, the atmospheric medative instrumentals. I love progmetal over progrock, but PT and Riverside are just the perfect blend of heavy yet relaxing. Truly heavenly.

I got Stupid Dream from a friend in 2000 and I can't thank him enough, for this album has been really life changing for me. I basically collected their whole catalogue and have seen SW live (including No Man, Blackfield - other SW projects/collaborations) some 42 times, in 3 countries. It would be nice to check out another gem, from No Man (=SW together with his friend Tim Bowness). The album is called ''Returning Jesus'', the song is called ''Lighthouse.'' The whole album blew me away as well. Very different from Porcupine tree, yet sublime. ( BTW: on Don't Hate Me, Chris Maitland is on drums, Theo Travis on flutes and saxes.)

A great track from a great album by a great band ! (saw them for the first time on the Stupid Dream tour in 1999 and it was as good live as on record !). The Ambient aspect of part of this piece is not surprising from Steven Wilson since at the same time as the album Stupid Dream, he had among his many other and various musical projects an Ambient solo project under the name of Bass Communion (with recurring participant Theo Travis whom you heard on flute and saxophone in this piece).

Interestingly STEVEN WILSON hates the label prog rock because he felt it became a ‘style’ and ironically stopped progressing. He is however in the genre of prog while continuing to evolve all the time - the new album has little guitar because he had begun to sense what chords came next and was boring himself. That’s not to say he’s given up on the guitar just gone in a different direction for now - he will still do the back catalogue live. Steven has phases you get the Floyd influenced stuff, the metal period, the jazzier stuff and electronica. He keeps on moving
