Taman Connaught Night Market is Malaysian Chinese version of night market which is the largest and selling mostly Malaysian Chinese, or Taiwanese/Chinese food. Meanwhile other night markets eg. Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR) in the middle of Kuala Lumpur occurred every Saturday night mostly selling Malay or international (Japanese/Korean/Chinese/Indian/Thai) Halal food.

Pandan is a leaf that's used as an aromatic addition in Malaysian cooking. It's also used in pastries, desserts, etc purely for its pleasant aroma. Think of it as an oriental vanilla.

Pandan leaves are cooked for the flavour then discarded. Pandanus is a genus that spans the equatorial forest up to the timber line , on it's way there they join the orchids as epiphytes. It's a palm by a long stretch , veluminous (orchid roots), silicaceous(cuts like grass). The one we use is the Pandanus amarili-something. 😉

Generally, any food colored green are usually made with pandan extract/flavoring. It does have a distinct taste but mainly used for the aroma & color it adds in the use in cooking. Think of it like our equivalent to vanilla.

Enjoyed your video very much. Apam Balik is a staple that you would see in almost every market. There's actually two versions the thick version that you guys had and a thin crispy type. The filling is the same but tastes quite different. Both are nice in their own way. I recommend getting one with sweet corn and peanut instead of just peanut. Its arguably the most popular filling combination for apam balik. Regarding the mochi, the one you guys had is one that got recently popularised not really of a traditional style. Still nice tho. Petaling Street has an old lady that sells traditional mochi/muachi for many decades. The traditional style is not stuffed but covered in sugary peanut topping/crumble/coating. That market in Taman Connaught is a particularly large one, quite a good place to start as far as night markets go. Hope you guys have had a great time here. Cheers

In general, we normally buy food at the night market to go and have them at home with the whole family. Unless the stall provide seating or the food you bought is supposed to be finger/on the go food then eating at a night market can be a bit difficult 😅

I would have suggest you guys to go for a smaller night market for starters, the big and hectic ones are usually too much even for some locals that doesn't go that very often because some markets has too many varieties as well as these markets are known to changes over time quite quickly. Smaller markets are better start so you don't get overwhelm by too many unknown options/choices on top of very busy and fast pace crowd. Anyway, these night markets only some stalls has tables and chairs (usually those serving cooked noodles). Some items you can eat on the go and most you eat it at home. Its kinda impossible to try everything so don't be too stressed about it, just go for what you feel you feel like eating at that moment/what looks best to you/what pique your curiousity. The 2nd item you had is probably Pan Fried Dumpling and usually its filled with Pork/Chicken and some veges. Usually pandan is used to add a light aromatic flavouring to dishes, its not meant to be super strong flavour. I'm not sure also if they can be that strong in flavor (even if more concentrated) or will it taste good if it was done that way. The last item is called Apam Balik here locally, it was originated from China Fujian (Hokkien) and now it was localised/westernized/etc with different kinds of stuffings and flavourings and it is indeed one of the more popular local snacks.
