I'm not a dog trainer, but I'm *pretty sure* giving the dog treats OR handing him a new toy (she calls it 'misdirection') is IN FACT reinforcing behavior. Probably why the behavior hasn't stopped.

I'm a dog trainer and you're absolutely correct! She has conditioned him to do this. It's harmless, but this dog is very intelligent and has drive. She could do many activities with him to satisfy his drive.

Thing is... why stop it. Use it. The dog is showing a natural talent for retrieval/carrying. Utilize it. Give him a role in the family where he can carry things from one person to the other, objects around the house to help clean up, etc. Dogs love having a purpose, especially if it pleases their people and gets them rewards.

I think it depends on whether the owner considers it playful or disruptive. I can imagine a dog constantly rearranging my stuff becoming annoying fairly quickly. If the woman were complaining about the behavior (or if we got more of an indication that the husband was especially irritated by it, which I don't think we did), then I'd say it's the owners' jobs to correct that behavior. But they aren't complaining, and if they're happy with Tyson's playfulness, then absolutely I agree with you --- it's not as if it's _inherently_ bad behavior, like destroying stuff would be.

Yeah I feel like dogs kinda are what they are. Although I guess there’s something beautiful about dogs that get trained because they protect you. I’ve noticed trained dogs seem to know it and seem kind of pleased with themselves. My neighbor has a cow dog.

When he gets excited, because friends come over or something like that my bed pillow is the first "Victim" But once, in one of the first times he didi it, I found all my bed linen in the corridor. He is definitely part Golden Retriever. Golden Retrievers love to carry stuff through the house and they also have a soft mouth (they are very gentle when carrying it - it's as if they are carrying the duck back to the hunter). My Golden Retriever does this all day and it's the cutest thing ever.
