Dad had a white one, that was an R reg. Remember going on holidays to Saundersfoot and really hot black seats on sunny days burning my legs when we got in. Fond memories.

Nice to see the car again. I will suggest to get period correct reg plates though, they look much better.
@00kirbyd2 жыл бұрын
We do get quite hung up about reg plates in the UK. In many other European countries, such as France, it sometimes isn't even possible to display the original number, let alone the original font.

Great video of a car from my childhood days, hot plastic seats on summer holidays, they always come to mind when you see a car like this.

Looks like you guys over in UK love our fords here in South Africa. Great thing is that you can get all the spares in the UK. But I think I will keep my Xr3.

What a stunning looking car! I remember trying to talk my dad round to buying a grey Mk3 Ghia (I think a 2.3?) It was his friends wife's car but he said that "you should never buy a car from a friend" (an understandable point for me today but back in the 80s a preteen me just couldn't understand) It was a shame as my mum barely used her car and I would definitely have been driving it in the early 90s when I'd passed my test. Instead I drove her mid 70s Datsun 180B, a car that I loved and had great fun in (also a car that had to be scrapped in 1992/3 due to heavy rust even though the poor thing had only done around 40,000 genuine miles. My mum was the second owner, the first being an old man that lived up the road from us) We were all really sad to see the 180B go, it was a surprisingly pokey car that looked like a mini American car (a bit like the Mk3!)

Great stuff! Especially the build up of the 'epic journey'... to Brugges, about an hour and a half from Calais! I thought you were going to drive it back to South Africa! Now that would be epic!

At today's fuel prices?!
@00kirbyd2 жыл бұрын
@@ClassicsWorldUK Haha, only joking. I drove to Bruges myself earlier this year - took a return ferry day trip! A nice adventure that isn't too far from home. If you were ever to decide to take it to Africa, the fuel prices would surely be a lot more reasonable!

Lovely car and a Pembrokeshire reg plate too. I had a Mk3 back in the day they were a durable and nicely styled car for the time.

At least the heater matrix is in an easy place to work at. I had a problem with mine many years ago it was just clogged up as previous owner ran with no anti freeze, MK3 Cortina is my favored Ford this brought back some good memory's 😁👍

Back in '75/'76 I had a 1973 1.6L 4-door in Daytona Yellow (I think all the colours had racing connections - Sebring Red....). As was usual at the time it was known as the Coke bottle. It was high mileage but had been well-maintained as a fleet car. The tin worm was awful, not that it rotted through but "worm" tracks under the paint. I chopped it in for a Hillman Hunter based Sunbeam Alpine, another ex-fleet car but much better alround.

Love it, great to save these Fords. Many getting banger raced! I have a 1974 South African import coming soon, but it’s not a Ford :) It has the same non-inertia seat belts too!

Lovely to see a Mk3 Cortina being loved and cherished. I learn't to drive in a Mk3, but it was however a slightly higher spec than this red example. My father surprised his car loving boys and bought something completely out of character. A banana yellow Cortina GT with a black vinyl roof. My favourite family car as a child, I even remember the number plate 'OSO10L' is she still out there?

Were you able to choose the plate or was it allocated at random ? Would you be able to request a reg from a certain area of the country ?

We were assigned the plate at random, but we can now assign a personalised plate to the car

Sorry for being a stickler for detail but the final year Mk3 Cortina L had rectangular headlamps, though that was for UK built examples.
