In this riveting talk, Alexander Betts gives pragmatic solutions to the Syrian refugee crisis. Persuasively argued, expertly analyzed and wonderfully presented, his ideas--4 in total--shows how the humanitarian issue to be handled in a humanitarian manner. I personally feel, my country and China together can handle easily 1 million refugees. Let's our politicians think differently to stop this menace.

Mason Wong We can't just judge a huge group of people based on a minority that commit crimes. Just because a few idiots molest women in Germany, doesn't mean the women and children, skilled men that could be an asset in the UK don't deserve help. (and let's face it, our NHS is pretty much run by foreigners because we don't produce enough doctors of our own) These are people that could potentially save yours or your family's lives later on down the line. We can't just leave them to drown in the ocean, and there's no use in being patriotic ("this is our country not theirs") because the UK is fucked either way... Our own government is riddled with corruption... Tax dodgers and pedophile rings that think only about themselves and their wealth, we don't mean anything to them so we should look out for one another, especially those from countries that our own governments are turning into inhabitable wastelands.

Non-muslims can forget about equal rights .. I just don't believe that muslims will not impose their sense of "Sharia" justice on my head when it comes time to vote for issues such as .. .. freedom of speech, women's rights, inheritance laws, freedom of beliefs, fairness of treatment on differential beliefs, abortion, gay marriage, non-bias treatment of religions and non-religions .. .. no way, because I'm not a dodo..

Both attacks were perpetrated by Islamists .. And more recently, Islamic vigilante groups have actively pressured the government to shut down other religious groups for being different from their own doctrines ... In Brunei recently, after the King implemented the Sharia law, Christians were forbidden from even putting up banners or decorations to celebrate Christmas .. I think you may be a little bit too optimistic about the world we live in and about the intentions of some social groups ..

Its so easy to preach Moral, if you are not affected. Greetings from Cologne
@loreleifae47308 жыл бұрын
For all the people worrying about terrorism and how he didn't address it, I think the question really is how much do you value Europeans over other people. If you believe all people are equal, then letting people in and potentially saving 1000s of people from dying on dangerous journeys ought to be worth it, even if a minuscule percentage are terrorists and plan a bombing that kills, let's say, 100 people. It seems like most conservatives would say "look, proof these people are terrorists". I would argue, hey maybe we need stronger background checks, but that is still saving a net benefit of 900 lives. I call that a utilitarian win.
@loreleifae47308 жыл бұрын
Why? Is the issue a flaw in my logic that my stance is not the most utilitarian decision, or are you arguing against the pure utilitarianism of it. My essential premise is that americans and Europeans are not inherently more valuable than people from Syria. Therefore, from a purely moralist perspective saving the most lives regardless of whether or not those are the lives of the people from the host country is the most moral action. I know this is youtube comments, but im curious as to where the flaw in my logic is as opposed to just saying im delusional.
@loreleifae47308 жыл бұрын
Okay, two main points. Firstly, your hypothetical is a total false analogy. In the analogy you propose you are suggesting an intentional, guaranteed, DIRECT violation of one's personal rights to life and property. That is a vastly different issue than reducing restrictions of travel because it MAY create an INDIRECT threat to the rights of the European group. No one is suggesting that we kill you and give your house to refugees. I am saying that we do the best we can to help people despite the risk that something bad may happen because people are people. It seems the debate over this focuses on either "all these people are terrorists, keep them out." or "obviously the people running from terrorists are not terrorists, let them in and stop being paranoid." when the reality is some of these people may be terrorists but most of them aren't and what risk are we willing to accept for those that may be terrorists? Frankly I think that unless you think European lives are vastly more valuable than those of Syrians you come to the conclusion of closing borders in this circumstance. Also, and I guess here is where the delusional comes in, Im not actually convinced your hypothetical is as morally destitute as you say it is. Sure, I wouldn't support killing me for other people, because im human and therefore inherently selfish. But if we apply the veil of ignorance I would probably say kill the European family. Im not going to say it would be moral to do so, but I am not convinced it is such a clear moral negative as you try to portray it. Does one significant direct violation of moral rights really outweigh hundreds of indirect violations that would come from not doing that? It's more of a grey area than you try to portray it.
@loreleifae47308 жыл бұрын
I contend the only difference between killing say 1000 Syrians due to non-action vs. 100 Europeans do to action is nothing about "saving one group over another". One group is going to die anyway. If we keep them out, then we are still sacrificing one group over another. We are just making that sacrifice by essentially doing nothing. The only difference between my view and yours is I say killing more people is worse while you say killing through action is worse than through inaction, regardless of the numbers. Is that a misunderstanding of your position? And if not, does that fairly minor difference of opinion really make me a morally destitute delusional creature not even worth discussing with?

In Egypt, after the past years events in Syria, the number of syrian people has been really increasing. I'm not sure if they're refugees or normal travellers who decided to settle here but syrian restaurants are everywhere now. They have more types of cheese than we Egyptians have, they introduced new dishes, and new scrumptious desserts as well. Syrian restaurants and grocery stores really excel here! They opened shops in other fields as well such as carpentry and others but they're most famous for food, at least for me. I have heard some heartbreaking stories about people who lost everything after having had a blooming business and had to restart from zero in Egypt. Trying to imagine all of the Syrian people, I met, not being able to work is petrifying.

I just want to ask, where are all these money going to come form? I understand that refugees should be helped, but with what he is proposing, they probably won't want to go back to Syria. I understand that this talk may have crossed into the zone of political issues but that doesn't mean that we disregard the reality of the situation. Let's not blame the victims for not fighting back or resisting. But let's try to see them for the people that they are. Because they are just people who ended up in a terrible situation with hard choices. I don't think that it is a political issue to try and present them with better options. I think that its a humanitarian issue or just a humanity issue.

A solution or a human compromise could be reached without been inhuman, that is what we have been of lately.

The problem here is that the citiziens of Europe have already been in contact with immigrants that has been badly integrated and are acting out so the feeling towards them are at an all time low. If the goverment would just have thought out a way to intergrate them naturally instead of just taking in as many as they can (talking about Sweden here) just to keep up an act that they are helping is just a fools game. If the goverment cant think of a way then this will just spin out of control until something really bad happens.

I'll be honest, there are huge problems with his suggestions, such as financing problems and cultural clashes. Yet, the use of refugees in employment if done right should be great, but again, it has to be done right, so that the job places of citizens aren't compromised. Therefore, the Ugandan example is practically likely to work only in low income countries, where people seek drastic increases in business activity, thus seek employment. Might not work for HICS, which will employ refugees for being "cheaper labour", harming citizens taking up a smaller proportion of workforce compared to refugees. .

realnarutoboy That's true. TED organizers have a liberal mindset. My point was simply that TED is about open discussion about varying topics. People are free to argue against the opinions presented in this video, but I was disappointed to see that most of these comments did so in an emotional and rash manner. Instead of calmly bringing their own opinions to light, most have resorted to bashing and insulting. That's what I viewed as narrow-minded.

realnarutoboy I agree. I understand that emotions run high on both sides, but that doesn't make rash behaviour sensible. The sooner people learn to cast aside emotion, the sooner a solution can be developed.

I see so many hateful comments here, it really disgusts me. Most of us, and I say this including myself, never been under war circumstances. We don't know what's like to have to flee from home, to seek basic human's needs, such as food, potable water and a house to live. Most of us aren't forced to separate from our families, our friends. They didn't ask for war, they didn't want to flee. They didn't have a choice. It's easy for us to look from the outside and say such unhumane and mean comments like many did in this commentary section when we have never been under such situation. Okay, maybe what this guy suggests may seem a bit "lefty" for many of you, far-left supporters. But at least he's suggesting plausible solutions, while many politicians, world leaders just sit there in comfort, watching thousands of unnacessary deaths. Instead of criticizing his plans with arguments like "it's not my problem, i don't care" or "he's a socialist!!!", why don't you waste your time watching something else? If you don't have anything nice to say, then please say nothing at all.
@33ro08 жыл бұрын
''If you don't have anything nice to say, then please say nothing at all.'' According to that logic, freedom of speech and constructive criticism shouldn't be allowed. If I don't like something, why on earth would I stay quiet about it? That is not how changes are made. Do not be a sheep and say what you want but think first. Negative comments can sometimes be helpful.
@beebsmiho8 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying that negative comments should be banned. I'm saying people should try to be more respectful when they want to disagree with something. There's absolutely no need to be rude to express your criticism - which is how the marjority of the negative comments on this video is constructed. And yes, I do agree with you. Negative comments are helpful, but only when they are well-built and not downright hateful.

(Feel free to read and comment on my view): I, as a rich, white, well-educated man, can live, work and travel almost anywhere in the world and will face no racial or gender persecution almost anywhere. I bring economic value with me due to the skills I have diligently 'worked for'. There is no risk in hiring me, because the system of the world is made for economics, business and politics students like me, especially when they are also well connected. I have had the easiest life one can imagine, because this system is simply based around money. I am, to a very high extent, free, because I bring economic value, whereas a refugee is not free to come to Europe, because he does not provide a high initial return and the risks are similarly hard to quantify. The argument that is often brought is: “If we let them die, so be it. It hurts no one except for the people that care for that person. I realize that this is bad, but is almost impossible for me to feel empathy for someone so far away.” This is an argument I can understand, but one that I cannot accept. With refugees as well as economic refugees coming to Europe, there are three things are the main areas of concern. Fact #1: Short-term costs for the local government will rise due to housing, food, healthcare etc. Fact # 2: Refugees are often younger men and only 362.8/1255.6 thousand European refugees in 2015 came from Syria, so 892.9 thousand people came from other regions of the world. Are they only economic refugees? In Germany, 32.4% of asylum applications were rejected in 2015. An application takes at least 6 months to be processed. These 32.4% were house and fed by the government. This is expensive and of concern for sovereign states who must publicly continue to recognize the need to abide by human rights conventions, while they see people financially exploiting the system that is only meant to help individuals whose lives are in danger and not economic refugees as well. (Kosovo is a ‘country’ from which many European economic refugees stem). Fact # 3: Terrorism. If the refugees cannot enter, then the probability of ‘radical Islamic’ terrorists arriving sinks and Europeans stay safe. When you look at the first two facts, the common denominator is initially of monetary nature. Humans do not like giving their own, hard-earned money away to people in an ‘outgroup’, one which does not belong to our society. We cluster in communities of like-minded individuals and call these cultures and subcultures. Europeans are willing to pay extremely high taxes, because they see a return for their own people and they feel emotionally drawn to people they consider their own, especially since they all worked hard for this money, which has led to the well-being of the entire group. Thus, a people’s own money, in this case that of the citizens (of Europe) is more important, because it is connected to the wonderful things it has done for many of the people they care about. Their emotional response to anything threatening the peace and harmony within the in-group, by something like terrorism or outsiders living off their hard-earned money, is oftentimes negative. While terrorism is a challenge in our world, fewer people die by terrorist attacks than car accidents (by a mile). Hence, we should rationally, based on numbers and the realization that all humans have feelings and their lives matter above all material things, not value the Syrian refugee’s life as less important than that of the European counterpart that is killed, possibly by the same terrorist organization. Having such an emotional response, would be considered vanity. When money is placed above human life, then that is greed. I refuse to take a ‘realist’ cynical approach, because I have, or am really just trying to build, faith in the existence of a universal good, or God if you will, and hope that we can progress as humanity together, one small step at a time. We should begin with the acceptance of refugees based on UN conventions, ending the war and continuing to make the world into a place where I do not need one of my passports to travel, because ‘No Human Is Truly Illegal’. ***** I'd be extremely surprised if 20-60% of refugees are economic refugees...can you provide a source for that figure?
@KIrbyTheFlrst8 жыл бұрын
+Sasataf Most refugees coming through are not of Syrian ancestry, most syrians actually settled in Turkey, even with deteriorating conditions. Most syrians have become anxious and angry due to other 'economic migrants' pushing thru and getting to their locations in Europe using the Syrian civil war and the world's empathy to get into these countries abusing social programs. Also if you look into how muslim's have integrated in these countries such as Britain and Belgium, they have separated themselves, which in turn causes new generation muslims turn to hatred/radicalization as they don't understand why people dislike, why police won't come to their areas, why are we separated from their new fellow countrymen? I don't know the answer to help them all, I was/am still in favor of establishing safe zones in syria, work with assad and monitor elections to determine whom to be a leader. But this is almost impossible now due to extremists, such as ISIS and Al-Nusra that would rather die then give up their power.
@Sasataf8 жыл бұрын
+KIrbyTheFlrst Whether they are Syrian or not isn't the point. There are other regions that suffer from conflict. "Most syrians have become anxious and angry due to other 'economic migrants' pushing thru..." Can you provide proof of that statement? "Also if you look into how muslim's have integrated in these countries... they have separated themselves..." If you look at how ANY ethnicity have integrated into ANY country, where there are large enough numbers, they will often form their own community. That is why you see Chinatowns in many cities. As well as Little Tokyos, or Little Havanas, or Little Indias. They have every right to settle in areas with their own people. "...which in turn causes new generation muslims turn to hatred/radicalization as they don't understand why people dislike..." Proof of that statement? "...this is almost impossible now due to extremists..." So fight the extremists. Don't punish the refugees who don't share the extreme views of extremists.

Damn that was a lot of negative feedback. This anti SJW trend are starting to tip over a little to far I think. Whether or not you want to stay ignorant to it, the mass immigration from Syria is a big problem in the world that needs to be solved. Now TED talks is largely about bringing new ideas to solve modern problems to light. This dude is actually the first one I heard mentioning a constructive idea to solve this problem since it began. And on top of it the idea is based on making use of the market to solve the problem, which is something I don't see every day. I would have totally agreed with the SJW accusation if the talk was more about blaming and suggesting unreasonable actions. This anti SJW thing people have going on seems to make you unable to actually listen and think before judging. If the rest of the world had been keeping their fertility to fewer than two children per woman, as Europeans have been doing for the last 40 years, there would be no world refugee crisis. You can't displace people who have never been conceived. How can any government, corrupt or otherwise, provide all its citizens with clean water, sanitation, health care, education and jobs when they persist in multiplying at the rate that they do. And what happens when they fail? You get civil war. The amount of money lavished on a single refugee flown into Australia would pay for basic education and contraception services for many women in refugee camps and undeveloped countries. That is where the world's humanitarian effort should be directed. No one should resettle refugees.

Interesting ideas. Hard to see what the knock on effects will be if they are applied but only the fourth really is about one of the real issues. The first three are about combating symptoms of the general exclusion of refugees, holding them at arms length. Refugees are excluded because they are outsiders and human tribes are always leery of outsiders. If you want refugees to be accepted you have to turn them into immigrants and then get the locals to stop being so belligerent and accept them as they naturalise. Hard to fight something that deeply ingrained though, especially on the society level.

"We have labor shortage"? No we don't. Unemployment is high as it never was. These ideas are not new. The idea of a "city" for refuges is however impratical. A permanent settlement becomes autonomous (not exactly a bad thing) but if it creates business why should they go back once the conflict is resolved? And what authority would rule these setlements? Even now there are locations in europe where the ruling country does not enter and does not exercise law in it. Also, most refuges don't want to give their fingerprints or photo just to be registered for circulation in europe, so I don't believe a "visa" would solve anything. In 1942 there wasn't the threat of terrorrist that there is now, and that changes everything. I believe that there should be given oportunities, education, jobs/ocupation, but ending the cause for refuges is much more important: overpopulation, climate change, lack of food, lack of water, civil war, even lack/censor of internet... That is what needs solution.
