Little Micro Logging Today with the RK 55 and Wallenstein FX 85 Skidding Winch, Today I headed to the woods looking for some soft woods to use for framing and siding for some maybe some drying sheds. I found some good red pine that should work well for those needs.

I watched Buckin Billy Ray's birthday wishes to Hunter with my 30 year old son who is not an outdoorsman at least at this point. I remarked that the world is filled with a lot of people who are uncaring but this man is special and very caring. We both enjoyed his tribute to your son very much.. Buckin is a special guy. Best of luck to him and of course The Morgan Family!

It was funny that I was watching Buckin’ and you before I ever saw you two promoting each other’s channel. That day, I subscribed to both channels and been loving it ever since. Buckin’ has taught me so much about dropping trees. Still really cautious, but I am getting more confident. I really impressed my friends at elk camp when I dropped a tree through a narrow hole. We would have not dropped it, but some idiot chopped half way through it with an ax and left it. And I watch you and wish I could afford a tractor, but being retired, funds are limited. Living vicariously through you and Buckin’.

Hello from Norway. Really love your channel (and off course Buckin’s too). My lifestyle is very close to yours - ‘homesteading’, logging, milling, hunting etc. As others mention here - Norway spruce is excellent for framing (2xs). Straight logs, little or no twisting when drying and your Woodmizer will cut them like butter. Another thing - paint or siding stain stick better to spruce than pine. Kept dry it will last. Have 40+ acres of spruce ready to harvest - and lots of projects coming up...

Unfortunately I have no red pine but I will tell you it makes great framing lumber. My Hemlock is mostly shaky so it’s brittle but I have a lot of white pine. It’s great, culls burn nicely in my out door furnace. Mike, I don’t mean to be picky but watch how you set your chokers. The last log in the video, the choker needs to have the opening set facing up. This way your pulling on the strongest part of the hook, also if it were to break while you are winching, with the opening up your hook drops to the ground in a more controlled manner. I’ve been hit with a couple of my chokers breaking and flying through the air. Something you don’t never forget. Very painful. Great video. Thanks

Any kind of pine usually make good siding or like accent wall or shiplap cause it has small knots where every branch was. Also red pine likes a more sandy soil and drier conditions, and maybe fire if it’s regenerates like jack pine. They grow as a more open forest kind of like a dry pine Savanna

You will enjoy using that softwood for both timber framing and boards. I and the farmer cut and milled 15 large white pine 3 yeas ago and have had it drying inside a 1820 barn that we plan on residing with boards from it at the farm I cut on. Good work and I am gald you have softwood to mill. Will work great on your new buildings. Hopefully 2020 will see me putting up a barn to house my toys. Looking forward in watching you build yours.

Buckin is a great guy. On another note I discovered a market on softwood this past summer that after 20 plus years in the firewood business I didn't realize existed. Up here in Northern VT on the Canadian border we have a huge selection of good hardwood to choose from for firewood. So hardwood has always been what we sold. After a drop in the soft wood log market this past summer, I decided to put the wood into cut and split camp firewood. I sold a lot of it. By all means its better to make lumber than firewood but a great way to use up the less desirable parts of the softwood trees. I also built a kindling making machine to use up the softwood on. Works great and bags it at the same time. Keep up the great videos, love your content.

Red pine burns much like white spruce, good in stove but can tar up chimney so not good in fireplaces. I have sawn lots of red pine on my woodmizer and it saws very well, the pitch gums up the lube system so use lots of water and some pine sol mixed in it to help the blade keep clean. Dry it in the open with lots of air flow or it might turn black from the moisture. Makes nice framing 2x's and if sorted and hand picked clear 1x's can be tongue and grooved for interior sheathing, very nice log cabin look once clear coated. Hope this helps.

Norwegian spruce makes good lumber. For 1x4s or even 2xs for building. We love in Genesee county Michigan and my uncle sawmills Norwegian spruce for people a lot. But if you cut that stuff and have to let it sit for a while you have to get it off the ground and also debark it incects love it if it still has bark on it. The heart of the tree on spruce will stand up to the weather good also.

Good morning, Mike! You have been an amazing guidance to me and I have learned a ton from what you do so thank you! I'd like to try sharing one thing that I learned from Buckin Billy Ray that I saw in this video and could save you some lumber one day - when bucking logs to length, cut compression first! It saves your logs from splitting as the tension and compression forces fight in the last part of your cut (the bottom couple of inches for this red pine). Then you can jump back and forth from the compression face to the tension face until you work your way through the log. I don't want to come off as telling you what to do because that wouldn't be fair - but this advice from Buckin has helped me and may help you too! Stay safe and continue to do what you can to avoid that dreaded cabin fever! Thanks!

In central Virginia we have red pine everywhere it is the most common wood by far. So we use it for everything. It does work for burning in fire pits if well dried but I wouldn’t suggest burning it in a fireplace in large quantity as it might gum up your chimney. It also works well for furniture and makes pretty good siding if you like the look. Oh and of course you can use it for framing material and for stall bedding if you chip up the limbs and the tops.

Mike, from what I read White Oak is great for outdoor. Not sure if it needs protection. As for the soft wood. They use to use green lumber or lumber not season enough to build sheds. Just remember that it will shrink, wood joints will shrink. But using metal fasteners , you should be able to use green lumber for your shed. My father and I used Green wood for a roof that is still standing after 50 years. Some of the smaller wood you could cut in to 6x6 and 8x8 for the shed. Save you a lot of money.

Hey Mike, take the first 8-10 inches of the branches off the pine trees, split and dry them for Hunter, they make great “hot sticks” for fore starters, the dry sap is extremely flammable. These pine branches are also known as “Cherokee torch wood” almost any pine works if I’m correct, give it a try!

If you find the red pine is fairly clear and has very few knots I would suggest using some of the logs to do 2x6 and 2x8 timbers and I would also suggest cutting some logs to do those as 12.5' and 16.5' lengths. Those are really useful lengths for rafters, and base frames for sheds and outbuildings. It looks like your WoodMizer LX 150 could easily handle those lengths.

Mike, I’m not an expert by any means, but my Dad was a carpenter and I’ve had some familiarity with red pine over my years. It was very commonly planted here in Ontario for reforestation after clear cutting, and in fact I have about 5 acres of mature red pine forest on my 100 acre lot. It grows quite fast and straight, particularly if controlled in the early years to keep other species out. It makes decent lumber but doesn’t have the natural preservative properties of a species like cedar, so it shouldn’t be used where it’s continuously damp (eg. at ground level on a structure) unless you use a commercial preservative or keep it painted. It’s ok for natural siding with rain exposure as long as gets enough air to dry down, but of course will turn grey with age. Red pine can also be used for round or square log buildings, although white pine is typically preferred, partly because of the knots that tend to seep sap for years. Because of that sap seepage, if you want to paint it, you must dry it thoroughly or the knots will bleed through the paint. It helps if you seal the knots - Dad always used “shellac”, but modern sealants will work once the wood is reasonably dry. Alternately, while I haven’t done it myself, I have friends who have fired the knots with a torch to stop them from seeping sap. It seems to work well as long as you don’t mind the blackened appearance if left natural, or can be painted over with maybe a touch of sanding and a primer sealer base coat. I’m sure others can add much more information, but I hope that helps start the conversation.

I hit on your comment about the 30” limb that broke of the oak and how it “was a mess”. Yeah, a bit cumbersome to work around that stuff sometimes but, truly, that forest debris is the base of the food chain for future generations of your forest trees. “The Hidden Life of Trees” by Peter Wohlleben helped me understand the complexities of my 35 acre woodlot. A short and fascinating book that I highly recommend to forest managers. BTW, permission is granted to inform Wallenstein that I ordered an FX85 to hang on my JD 3033R. We have some thinning to do and it arrives next week. Love the vids! KJ, Hillsboro, OR

*Norwegian Spruce is the only spruce we have here in Sweden. It usually holds all its limbs green all the way to the ground which means about a half dozen knots circling the trunk every foot or so all the way up the tree. Serious pain in the butt to split with an ax but as boards, I imagine it would be quite pretty but sappy.*

SPF lumber is Spruce, Pine or Fir. Most 2x4s and 2x6s at the big box stores around here are fir, which is the weakest of the 3, so your pine and spruce should both be good for structural lumber that is not exposed to continual dampness.
