Denam I agree, the AI was basically retarded through my entire walkthrough. There were times where the alien AI just "knew" I was there and the Alien was walking back and forward a corridor that was the only way to advance further. The vents were broken on many occasions, where you would get camped by the Alien and he would just rush you through the molotov making the gadget absolete. Then there was a moment when a human enemy would stand still 3 m. away from the Alien and they would just look at eachother... It all came down to sorta good and accurate graphics in the end and some occasional intense moments. IMO it had the potential but couldnt deliver.

@@Ponaru well most pc gamers talk constantly either about the graphics or the fps. It's because many invest a huge amount of money into a pc and then they expect the best graphics possible. It's because of that that more and more companies put graphics on the first place.
@iamoctonate5 жыл бұрын
@@mytop3467 I agree with you partially. Many of us do invest in more expensive PCs so that we can play games at higher framerates and with higher settings, although consol gamers are also partially responsible for this "make the game pretty" movement because prettier games sell better there too. However, this advantage applies more to multiplatform titles where the game is identical across the different platforms, so it would make sense that we would want to play them better since we have the power to do so. However I think many PC gamers tend to play a good variety of games that don't necessarily look great simply because the gaming experience is generally better on PC. Smooth framerates, the choice of controller/input device and mod support being among the main reasons.

Honestly, I think it would have been interesting if the majority of the game took place inside the school. Part of the reason I think that the first Outlast was so good was because you were in an insane asylum: a place that unsettling by nature. That's something that that the desert of Arizona cannot capture. Why do I say the school primarily? Well, schools after dark, if you ever been in one, is also a very eerie place to be. I'm so used to schools being full of life that seeing an empty school hallway borders on disturbing. Another reason I think Outlast was so good was simply the fact that Miles Upshur (Outlast 1 protagonist) is at the location to "investigate" meaning he has a reason to press on. Blake (Outlast 2 protagonist) on the other hand just wants to get himself and his wife out. Miles wants to get in, Blake wants to get out. Miles cares about uncovering what the hell is going on, Blake doesn't care. Miles has a reason for only being armed with a camera (that being to get every last bit of evidence he can) while Blake has no reason to only use his camera. On top of this, I found Miles to be relatable in a sense. Keep in mind, Outlast was my first horror experience where I completely finished the game. I started the game very afraid however as the game went on, I became "desensitized" so to speak. Miles was very similar, he started the game panicking at a lot of stuff (proven by a combination of his heavy breathing and his thoughts he writes down when recording certain events) but near the end a lot of stuff didn't phase him anymore (he no longer breathes like he's panicking and his written down thoughts is a completely different tone.) You just don't get better than this, I think.
@disgruntledgun184 жыл бұрын
his journal practically showcases what he feels when the game's occuring. also, he closes doors very agressively and loudly while waylon in the dlc closes it carefully so as to not attract anyone
@mwur61904 жыл бұрын
On your comment on Miles motivation. It reminds me how Blake and Waylon share a similar motive, which is to escape. I think the one thing that can justify Waylon's situation is that the patients in Outlast are much more stringer than him, which we know could be the case since it's shown in the initial game with Chris, the twins, and Trager (maybe some varients to some extent.) Not sure about Outlast 2 100% Maybe Marta, Val and Nick could beat Blake in a fight but the rest doesn't make sense. Especially the Scalled.
@harveyhodgson98773 жыл бұрын
This comment deserves more likes - this is exactly what I was thinking too. The open environment is beautiful but because of the linear structure of the game - that openness amounts to nothing. Hell - within outlasts 1 I found it awful to be stuck in the dark, with barely any batteries left and running out of time... In this - its too dark all the time. The dark, restrictive environment is constantly acting against itself imo.

I believe Joe gave this score because the game's suspension of disbelief is bad: There are tons of "usable and/or weaponizable things" around, the game doesn't let the player use them. Cameras don't need batteries every 10 minutes. An able man cannot be held down by a malnourished one armed guy. And you cannot see a crouching man in the middle of the night 10 kilometres away without having dog vision. Add bad checkpoint system, one hit kills and more, of course it would feel unfair. Also, the bit at 17:15 is plain funny. The same thing can happen in RE7 but in that case, Jack would just destroy the obstacle and continue to pursue you. Little details like this matter, especially in horror games where you need the player engaged the most compared to the other genres...

In the ending, Blake's shadow isn't holding the baby, hence why Lynn says that there's nothing there, the constant white blasts throughout the gameplay are from emp/microwave tests run by the unethical Murkoff Corp. these tests are what caused everyone to go batshit crazy and Blake is also being affected. This can also be proven at the fact that Simon Knoth saw the baby as well before killing himself. Still a worthless ending if you don't know the plot well and they're definitely trying to get you to buy dlc.

Oh there is no doubt Outlast 2 is far inferior to the first one and Whistle Blower. As Joe said gameplay is more polished but more poorly implemented, check point system sucks, and the narrative is so much lesser than the previous game. Though if I really had to pick one thing that pissed me off about the game... its the fucking lack luster villains! FFS how could they fuck it up so bad?! Outlast had a huge range of strange and interesting major villains that you had to deal with in both the initial game and its DLC. I mean I can still tell you Chris Walkers name. I can't name a single "major" villain in this game, aside from Knoth and thats only because they wouldn't stop saying is fucking name every five seconds, and have it written in every fucking collectable page, not because you know... he was actually interesting or anything. Seriously the major villains in this game are: religious fanatic #1. religious fanatic #2, religious fanatic #3 and Knoth who is never actually a threat to you. They all do the same thing, wander around absently spouting verses from their bible, ITS FUCKING BORING! Theres no diversity! And in the followup to the original that had a A war-scared PTSD tank of man who is misguidedly trying to actually help the situation, a deranged pretend doctor that cuts your fingers off after pretending to save you, murderous twins that deliberately set up ambushes, a priest that worships a machine as a god, a swam of sentient nano bots and its just no comparison. Even some of minor characters are more interesting, like the arsonist that was trying to kill himself as well as destroy the asylum because of their fucked up experiments on the inmates. And thats not even counting the additional ones in Whistle Blower... seriously poor show Outlast 2... poor fucking show. 4/10

I think the appeal of the first outlast was magnified by it's setting. The first game had claustrophobic environments and there was a lot of hiding to let enemies pass, then you could move past. It was tense. You would occasionally get caught and be chased which was scary. You’d end up either finding a place to hide and survive or occasionally but not very often get caught and die. Outlast 2 is mostly outdoors and appears open ended but its actually just as linear. You end up getting lost during chase sequences because a lot of the ways you try to go end up being dead ends. This caused you to die over and over and the game just became trial and error. It didn’t allow you to think through any situation or problem. That was the main thing that took the majority of the scariness out of the game for me.

I have to agree with Angry Joe here completely. Everything he said was spot-on. This is what I said from the moment I started Outlast 2 gameplay. The first one was better, and I could not see the high praise that this game was getting. Please do not misunderstand me. Outlast 2 is not a bad game, but it is just not as original/creative or immersive as the first one. They really should have had it take place entirely in the school. That was the closest to the first Outlast game that this second game got. Even the DLC for Outlast was more Outlast 2 than Outlast 2 was. Then there are the cheat codes some of the threats of this game have where they are basically all-knowing, as if a main character that can't fight back, or even block, and gets killed after like two hits already didn't give the threats enough of an advantage as is.

the thing is outlast was just as repetative you also too just went from location to location running from trager, or chris walker, or billy, or the naked twins, doing the same objectives like switching pumps on. The difference was entirely the story and the setting of the insane asylum and the wtty remarks you would make in your notes and the documents actually provided information not just passages of a rambling holy zealot. the story was everything that made outlast good but when you take that away it was exactly the same repetative shit outlast 2 has done which is why i don't get how that is a valid argument from joe or anyone else.

The school sections were the best in the game and I think without them this game would've been trash. (SPOILERS) The ending is still trash even with all the notes revealing that everyone was just crazy from a large scale Murkcoff experiment. It's super poorly presented and you can only obtain this part of the story in the notes through multiple playthroughs or keeping your eyes glued to a walk through which ruins a gaming experience if you ask me. I remember The Evil Within did the same thing, the main character, Sebastians past was told through the notes, which was very lazy considering how important it was to know Seb's wife later on dlc. Outlast could've told a better story through notes and collectables but it's atmosphere makes it nearly impossible to do on a first playthrough, which for how unsatisfying the ending is is essential. Outlast 2 for me is a good game but it moved away from what made the first one good.
@saddlerjfk7 жыл бұрын
(SPOILERS) What I think could've fixed all this was giving us an option to kill the baby in the ending. Blake's effort to resist the mind control done by Murkcoff. Upon killing the baby however he wakes up for a moment and sees there's no baby in the first places, and Lynns belly looks normal. With an option to do that the game would've been a bit more satisfying if you ask me.
@Marshall_Thompson7 жыл бұрын
Lynn's belly would've looked the same.

Joe has a point with the tools / weapons. But what gets me even more is there are several places that have flashlights laying on tables next to batteries. Why would the character NOT pick up a flash light? He's willing to pick up batteries and bandages. And a way to fit it into the story and make it *scary* would be maybe when the batteries die the character drops it on the ground, so you have to wait until you find another flash light on a table somewhere. Or make the light beam not very bright, or a narrow beam. Anyway, /rant

Tekie Wolf because the camera allows him to see In the dark. while not giving away his position... also why would you wanna play outlast with a flash light? then itd be like every other horror game, night vision is basically what makes the game unique.
@batalorian79977 жыл бұрын
Tekie Wolf well if I'm hiding from a bunch of murderous psychopaths and I had to either a flashlight that gives me away, or a camera that allows me to see in the dark without revealing myself, I think I might go with the camera
@hashem63567 жыл бұрын
maybe you are right. like maybe the flashlights could work like 1 battery's worth and it never works until you find another one or you can just use your camara
@akmal94ibrahim7 жыл бұрын
Tekie Wolf Simple. Flashlights consume less battery and has better brightness at wherever you are pointing it at but enemies will easily detect where you are. So you, as a player, have to choose between saving battery but risking being found with the flashlight or using up battery but better sneaking with the night vision. That will change up the game. Heck, they can then make one or two levels that force you to use one over the other.

They changed the running mechanic so Blake gets tired after sprinting a short distance. Running in the original Outlast was actually really reliable because you were faster than all enemies and could run forever.

The reason the school portions of the game are so much better is because it mimics the environments and the gameplay from Outlast 1. More linear in nature and only 1 threat at a time. This combination results in less trial and error and more enjoyment/progression. Plus, the school sections dealt with supernatural stuff which mean more creepy and unpredictability. (because entities are unpredictable). These sections of the game achieve all of this all while being more interesting (in my opinion) and with many lights on! The music is creepier too which really helps set the tone and the atmosphere. It's almost like there were 2 development teams 1 for the school and 1 for the religious fanatics/crazies and they just decided to sandwich the 2 together but it doesn't work and it's clear that the school stuff was way better. They should have made 1 great game but instead they made half a great game and half a shit game and no glue/cohesion to bring them together which resulted in a crappier overall package.

I love the first outlast. The school section is nothing like that. You keep wandering in the same location. You can’t explore anything because the doors are locked. The school is big and empty. There’s nothing interesting and complex about that childhood story. They couldve told it in 5 minutes. Instead red barrels waste players’ time by making them think there’s some unique twist.

This game failed to evolve the original's formula, something that Alien Isolation and Resident Evil 7 did, thus it deserves to be received as a lesser game.

Christopher O Agreed, Resident evil 7 and alien isolation are the best first person horror games.

RE7 didn't look very good to me. The beginning looks pretty fun, but overly scripted; then it falls apart near the middle with boring fetch-quest gameplay. I haven't played it, but I've watched a playthrough, so from that I'd say it's a 6/10 game in my opinion.

Evolve the formula? RE7 is exactly like the original titles just with a first person perspective lol.

I'd stop referring to Metacritic as a legit source. The reviews are all over the place and most of it is nonsense.

HighLanderPony true. especially the movie rating system. sometimes it's right but other times it doesn't add up

Tyler Payne I'm guessing it adds up when the reviews agree with your opinion, right?
@cheeppacees888887 жыл бұрын
No because it shows multiple reviews from many different sources, so by that logic you should blame a website for posting other peoples thoughts dumbass. But yeah there are other review sites like meta critic but I wouldn't say they are more reliable
@somestrayan46827 жыл бұрын
Metacritic is just a collation of reviews from multiple reviewers, which is then standardised. I agree that it's all over the place, but only because individual reviewers are all over the place. It's still the most efficient way of looking at what people are saying about a game.

SPOILER ABOUT END: Ok so if you did not get the ending, well, thats prob cuz u dont know enough about outlast one. Weird ass experiments by murkoff, a bunch of bad scientists, were happening The WHOLE village is an experiment, the creepy notes about mircowaves and tech are not villager rantings, those are notes from the scientists. Anyway, back in outlast one, there is a note about a device called the morphogenic engine that said that women exposed to the device were hallucinating, thinking they were pregnant. All these false pregnancies resulted in death. This is the case of Lynn. She did not give birth to a child. She was telling the truth when she said "there is no one there". Blake had lynns guts in his hands. Thats why the pregnancy hurt too much and was fatal. Blake and Knoth saw a baby because there were both so brainwashed. At the end, when the sun exploded, that was a real bomb that killed blake. Which is why the game ends w a child blake, playing w a dead jessica, and blake doesnt wake up from the dream anymore. This bomb is how murkoff destroys the evidence. They had prob gathered enough data and wanted to move elsewhere. Its just a tragedy about how blake and lynn accidentally wander into a mad scientist evil experiment and get completely fucked and killed.

i copy pasted this from some other video but i think it makes sense and actually i feel like if joe reads this he will increase the games rating to like an 8 or at least 7
@SpiderriaN7 жыл бұрын
Outlast seems to like killing off the main character at the end if the game. I hope they don't make that the norm for them because that just sucks. What's the point if you just always die in the end? I think that's one of the reasons why Whistle-blower went so well. You didn't die.
@MrCardShark0077 жыл бұрын
What if the explosion in the end was the radio/microwave tower exploding and in the DLC we play some Murkoff scientist that brings down the operation and actually saves Blake from going mad? Just a thought
@marcosdheleno7 жыл бұрын
in other words, its the story about a pointless temporary survival, that, has the same ending as if you had been killed by the first challenge in the game. its no diferent from the "run from the creature to die from a fall", kind of crap people hate in so many games. just answer this, does he actually achieve anything?
@Verasoul7 жыл бұрын
Well, does Joe ever change his rating? And is there a point to? And factor in the gameplay flaws he noted. I agree, this entry had more running than stealth. A lot of the ways to hide seem arbitrarily placed at times, like the locker in the mines. You only need to hide under one bed in the entire game. When you know where to go, you don't need to hide barely at all. The challenge felt cheap and besides a few jump scares, I only got the heebie jeebies in the school sections which were a lot like the first game. The glam was brilliant, especially the blood shower in the final section before the mine. But the meat just didn't have that flavor. I enjoyed the game more than Joe did, but I get a lot of his points. In the end, it's an opinion of a gamer, not a scholar. We all know why we watch Joe or any game critic that adds some comedy skits on the side. Much like why this game isn't "pointless temporary survival". It's the journey that matters. You can't just say, "Oh, it was all for nothing because you died." Like all things in life, it's the experience that carries weight. It's the content that Joe produces that carry weight, not a number at the end of it.

@jeffvella97657 жыл бұрын
resident evil was shit, but at least it copied everything well to the point where you would predict the jump scares. This game is worse since they copied them badly with nothing new. They seemed to have forgotten that the fear of death is what is scary, death is an immersion breaker. Immersion was what made the first one so good. A realistic fear of death without actually killing you most of the time. Resident evil was unoriginal scripted shit but at least, it managed to get the basics right, outlast 2 didn't even get the basics right. In the second one they killed you so many times that the fear/immersion is long gone.
