@@bartdeking I've done a road trip one time that was 10 hours long and we only did one bathroom stop for half hour in a gas car. Most of them will do 550-700km on a tank. Would be awesome to be be able to do this in a Tesla. My main desire though is having around 300 miles of range out of 60% of the pack, so that I can do more driving at a time. This would save time and money without having to supercharge or bring my battery pack outside of 20-80%, speeding up degradation in the process. That's what 500 miles real world range would grant.

And even then - it's the difference between you catering to your vehicle and vehicle catering to your needs. If you have ~500 miles of range, you can stop whenever YOU need/want. If you have 200 miles on a good day, you have to stop when the car needs to. Even if you have sleeping kids in the back and would prefer not to wake them up.

It reminds me of the first tests of charging speed, where the Rivian appeared to be beating the pants off the F-150 Lightning, but then after about 75% state of charge, the Lightning caught up and then pulled ahead.
@stevehuthman741Ай бұрын
Last summer under ideal conditions (warm weather, no headwind, etc.) I made a 650 mile trip in my Rivian R1T (gen 1, dual-motor, max pack, 21” wheels). I charged up to 100% at home and drove 310 miles in hilly terrain and had 14% remaining. Then I took advantage of free level 2 charging at my hotel to charge overnight back up to 100% and drove on another 340 miles to my destination (with 8% remaining). I figure that I spent about $17 in residential electricity for that 650 mile trip in a pickup truck. Even in winter I've never had a range of less than 320 miles (calculated based on miles vs. percent of battery used). The EPA “overall” rating on my truck is 410 miles, but if you look into the EPA documents the “highway” rating is actually around 375 miles. I came pretty close to that on this trip.

I wouldn’t have ordered them if I knew I wouldn’t get them for the start of my winter season this year. I was going to switch to Martian wheels for my Model S as well, but not sure I’d ever order from Martian again since they totally lie about how long orders will take. Paying 100% up front and waiting 3+ months when they were supposed to be just over a month is unacceptable. It could have something to do with absorption charge. The best way to charge a battery to 100% is to charge on level 1 over night. That gives the battery management system time to top balance the cells in the battery. it also gives time to get a more thorough heat soak in the battery pack, for more uniform temperature throughout the whole battery pack. That could yield at least another 5 kWh or so in each of the battery packs in the trucks, perhaps more!

@@bob15479 Thats fine if you feel that way but I want to see proof before I just put it off on different day different wind thinking. No one has been able to prove that a Gen 2 Max pack is more efficient than a Gen 1 Max pack.

I think your test shows why people want those higher ranges you mentioned in the beginning of the video (400-500 miles). It isn't that they want to go that far, they probably want to comfortably know they can make 250 miles which is very normal for weekend adventures if you are trying to get somewhere. I know my thought is the vehicle needs to offer ranges more than 300, but your test indicates maybe I should want 400 minimum on a road trip vehicle. I wouldn't say this test showed a comfortable range of 250 miles.

Winter range is brutal. CT efficiency in these conditions is pretty good. Those EPA figures are total fiction. The CT core wheels appear to make more difference then you would think. Winter range tests a very important.

You guys need to do a test with rivian R1t LFP battery.

Sorry but 400ish-500miles is very necessary. Some of us want to use for towing, or maybe remote drives, camping few days without stress over battery or just 6hour road trip without charging 2-3times. Plugging in appliances or tools when camping or contractors out at work site for hours wanting charge batteries. Many reason for bigger batteries.
@bartdekingАй бұрын
Just drive a diesel truck for now as 99% of people are perfectly fine with 250mi range and a 150 mile towing range for the few times a year they tow. I 100% get that Tesla goes for the 99% and let the 1% wait till the production is significantly ramped up and battery production can keep up with the demand.

I agree. If you look at a map of Utah you will see that almost all DC fast chargers are located along I-15. In the rest of the state there are thousands of miles of state highways and scenic byways with no DC fast charging at all. I wish people in California would stop telling us that we don't need more range.
@bartdekingАй бұрын
@stevehuthman741 i wonder if you are deliberately deceptive, lying or not so smart or need glasses but there is a Supercharger available within 150 mile (delta to Ely) of any place in utah most of them within 50mi. Maybe stop being with all the drama and use think a bit more rational rather than emotional.
@stevehuthman741Ай бұрын
@@bartdeking I did say “almost” all DC fast chargers. Level 2 chargers don't help much unless you are charging overnight. Also I don't see any DC fast chargers (50kw or greater) in Delta. There is one listed in Ely but it shows as broken. I checked both Plugshare and ABRP. Am I missing something? Also take a look at the route from Montecello Utah, through Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion - 3 national parks and 400 miles with no DC fast chargers. Also, many Tesla superchargers in small towns are still version 2 (not usable be non-Teslas).

Rivian definitely does not like wind. We got caught in heavy rain plus wind strong enough to cause an 18 wheeler in front of us to have trailer tires leave the ground, we averaged 1.4 miles per kwh when we normally do 2.1 at higher speeds. Gen 1 quad.
@joeyscleaninglady2877Ай бұрын
EPA tests wall to wheel efficiency as well which is missing from this test
@CanonicGamesАй бұрын
I wonder if it's possible that the Rivian's rear motor was unknowingly engaged the whole time or partially. Perhaps due to choosing the wrong drive move, wind resistance causing it to stay engaged in order to maintain 70mph+, or even a software bug keeping it engaged -- maybe ADAS is forcing the rear motor to stay connected.

It's lucky you had that Rivian emergency lighting; it prevented other drivers from swerving off the road and trying to pass you on the right, through that field. Who knows what kind of chaos would ensue if all you had were hazard lights? #smart

For charging experts question, I have a Nema 14/30p in my garage for RVs is 125v. I can buy an adapter from Home Depot so I can connect the 14/50r from my level 2 portable charger. What happen if I do this? I thought it might be better than my 110v slow level 1 charging, but not sure if it would work at all or just burn down my house kind of thing ? Anyone tried this? I think some people must charge their EV at an RV site this way right?
@stevehuthman741Ай бұрын
@@timthompson6441 because of the adapter your car will think that it is on a 50 amp circuit and will pop the circuit breaker unless you manually set the car to a lower current.
