As a first year volleyball coach, your videos are awesome! I've played for years, never rec'd "formal" coaching though so knowing how to break down what I know and teach it to others was a struggle before finding your vids. Thanks Coach!

also a good fake (and great transition), the hitter saw him short, so hit deep, if the hitter saw him already deep, he'd hit short.

My LF positions just as you show here but he continues to reach for balls that are meant for LB. My fix was to have him only come off about 6-8' and a little more toward the left sideline so the roles are clearer. I was wondering if you have the same problem and how you solve it??

Would the coverage be similar when you only have one blocker? My high school team isn't very advanced and we have a lot of trouble covering holes...

great overall review. in my experience beginners and general recreation players have a huge problem adopting the off blocker role because that is relatively new in teaching and they often don't see that played with old timers (and the OH just wants to get outside and hit, watching tip after tip fall to the floor). I disagree on the right foot on the line for beginners in right back, because it's a bad habit that reduces range and is not played at higher levels (but you see fast spikes even in low level ball too). if you can reach right to play a ball it should be in bounds. your back a bit to deep in your example too, most people won't get tips or run back row setting from that deep. again, great video though!

Yeah. You know what i'm talking about then. Best drill is to "ground" the libero/LB (tell them to not move post contact not matter what). This teaches them to focus on reading the hitters better, and after every tip the team has to snarl at the OH with a quip or two about their D (e.g. "gonna just hit today or you gonna get your balls too").

Hi.. I watched this and "Right Side Hitter Defense - How to play DEFENSE Volleyball Tutorial" and I wondering if this will work well for a 6-2? It means that the setter from back-right will have to really run fast to the net make the set, right?

hmm i was thought that i should move up forward right behind the block to cover a drop ball or a feint and leave the back court to the middle blocker and subset. i never learnt line guarding because the blocker already covers the straight and cross

Great video, ( don't know if you've done this already ), but could you do a tutorial how to defend against a first tempo quick attack, those are for me personally the hardest to defend properly.

First tempo is one of the easiest to block because of the timing. But here are some tips for you. 1. Serve tough and put the opponent out of system (the best play). 2. Back row - go to base and react. 3. Front row - if the opponent is running effective middle, you can commit the middle blocker to go up with them for a while. While up, realize the MH should be hitting angles left or right (cut back or away) most of the time - and rarely can they switch mid swing. As MB, randomly make a late move either way so its a 50-50 or 60-40 hitters dilemma. Another strategy is to take away the hit to the right/angle (hitting to the left goes slower, allows more time for defense to react, and less court on that side typically). Good luck.

I have a question regarding the left front position in defense: What should be the deciding factors when going in for the block or digging the ball when the outside hitter gets the ball?
@hvaball150
@hvaball150 8 жыл бұрын
deciding factors are an out of system pass with a high set to the OH (you must wait for that) and you must make it to the triple block. otherwise, if there is any doubt, you pull off to the 10 foot line. no one usually gets on your case for not triple blocking.

@hvaball150

Interim, the base defense is good and the OH can help with the blocking. Same as a quick hit, but the OH instead of the middle. just be careful though, given how often your opponent actually dumps. Spending practice time or slightly changing your D to focus on an event that happens less than once per set (sometimes 1 per match even) can have all kinds of negative effects versus the event that happens 20 times a set. The dump goes down at high levels because it is not worth playing against. Same with the middle hit sometimes.

The right hitter is blocking and the right back had the short ball, so the area farther back in the court wasn't covered and so he saw the where the opponents hitter was heading and made an assumption, at least that's what I think happened

I kind of disagree with the middle back helping out defense on positions 1 and 5. At least in our level of play a lot of balls hit the block high causing a long ball, so the middle back will usually always stay behind the black (you can see it on the professionals as well, where the middle back sometimes even stands on or behind the baseline)). So what we practice is that in case of a diagonal block middle back helps out #2 and #5 takes on the behind block role whereas on a line block middle back takes on that role. I guess it is all a matter of philosophy though :)
@hvaball150
@hvaball150 8 жыл бұрын
I'll call B.S. Occasionally you see this philosophy of standing on or behind the base line. You need to be honest with how often this ball comes up in an area that is playable. 3 or 4 times per set would be max (being generous). It is usually so rare that it is a sensational play and looks super smart. How often does a ball go down just inside the 1 or 5 position (where the middle could be helping)? 5-10 times a set. I'd have to see the video where pros line up behind the baseline. No pro hitter is going to continue to hit high off hands to a waiting middle back beyond the baseline. Old saying: If you want to play off the court, sit on the bench!
