7 Unlockable Characters That Weren’t Worth the Effort

We’re not averse to putting in loads of effort for a worthwhile result, but we are dead against working our socks off for an insultingly shabby reward - as in the case of these unlockable game characters who were so much more hassle than they were worth.
Take Bayonetta's unlockable playable character Little King Zero, for instance.
Bayonetta is already a pretty challenging game, so imagine how much more 'fun' you could be having if you were playing as a character who was reduced to one hit point by every single attack in the game, regardless of how weak it was.
That’s the situation you find yourself if you play Bayonetta as Zero, King of Little Devils, a demon who looks like Santa’s skeleton trying to fight its way out of a garbage bag and costs you five million halos or the completion of the game's diamond-hard lost chapter Angel Slayer.
Or take Tofu from Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil 2 was full of great characters, from Leon Kennedy to Claire Redfield, to the unimaginably creepy police chief Brian Irons, to Sherry, the little girl who wouldn’t stop running off.
Get six A ranks in a row in the main game, however, and you unlock a new character, called Tofu. Tofu is, as his name suggests, a six foot block of tofu with hands, whose campaign involved running around the sewers brandishing a knife.
Still a better character than Steve Burnside from Resident Evil: Code Veronica though. Eff that guy.

Aeon is a man, who became a lizard who is slowly losing his humanity. And that's all you need to know because the series never bothers to do anything else with him. He's just kinda there to fill a slot sometimes. And all his story mode endings suck too. He's pretty fun to play though.

In Zero's defense, when you are going for Pure Platinum where you can't take hits anyway, he actually becomes a slightly buffed version of Bayonetta (besides dying in 2-3 hits, he has a few other altered mechanics which make him slightly stronger)

I can understand the Bayonetta one because it is basically ultra hard mode. Little Zero is pretty useful if you're going for Pure Platinum though, since you can't take damage if you want PP. That only leaves his significant speed boost in movement and attack, giving you a major advantage when you're trying to go for PP.

i think Bosconovitch required you to beat that beat-em up mode with 4 characters or something, had played the game a lot before figuring it out and it might be somewhat challenging, maybe it's an interesting mode. didn't have access to any memory card at first either. but maybe it's not that bad, haven't played tekken 3 in so many years now, but i think he was annoying to unlock. think toshinden 3 had some or 2-3 characters that i have no clue how to unlock, most characters where pretty straight forward cause you unlock specific characters with specific characters but there where 3 or so available with cheats but not sure how to unlock them. looked it up, you need to beat the game with one of the unlockeable characters on atleast difficulty 3 which is pretty normal requirement other than being a special character, and then change to at least difficult 7 and go on with the new ones. don't know how hard that would be. would probably have been easier to unlock some stuff if i knew it was possible, but some of them wasn't as straight forward as other. or streetfighter ex plus alpha required you to do some combo practice, but you have to start over if practice target falls and some combos where really complicated, descriptions where also really complicated, i've tried doing it later in life as well but it's too hard. think soul calibur 2 and tekken tag was the latest fighting games i played, i've bought some on steam though

@@specifikitty Honey Tree munchlax is a special munchlax that you can obtain in Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver that's obtained throught the honey tree method. What happens is use slather honey on a tree and wait 6 hours. When you come back, a pokemon should be there. But, you can not fast forward time on the device because they have to be in-game hours. And you can't soft reset because the pokemon spawned is determined as you slather the tree. Of those trees are "Munchlax Trees" which have the ability of spawning a Munchlax. The thing is though that there are only 4 trees generated per save file. And, those are determined by your secret ID which is impossible to know without hacking or cheating devices. Also, Munchlax is in the rare pool of the munchlax trees so he has less than 1% chance of spawning. On top of all that, it has the chance for metronome to summon instant-Death moves like final fambit, explode, Or memento.

Gotta mention Nuclear Throne. To unlock a character named Skeleton, you must play as Melting, notoriously the most difficult character to play in an already very difficult roguelite game, make it to a specific area late in the game and be killed by a specific attack from a specific enemy in order to revive as Skeleton, only to find hes probably even more difficult to play and succeed as than Melting himself, and you have to go through that whole process if you ever want to play as Skeleton again. And then theres Frog, which requires you to acquire a golden weapon found in a secret area, beat the game and loop (start over on extra hard mode), make it to certain a boss and defeat it with the golden weapon (should be mentioned that golden weapons are generally not good enough to be viable at that stage in the game, so even carrying one around by that point makes things harder), causing the boss to drop a Frog Pistol. THEN you have to make it to another secret area, stash the Frog Pistol in a chest, end that run by whatever means, start another run, make it back into that area to find a Golden Frog Pistol, which you will then unlock to replace your starting weapon. Whenever you choose to start a game with the Golden Frog Pistol equipped, you will then play as Frog. And hes not really that good either

No matter how crappy any of these characters are or what they’re worth is in the game at least you got them in the game when you bought it. I can’t even begin to describe the level of frustration it causes me and that you have to purposely purchase a character in a game when back in the day if you had skills you could unlock those characters but you can’t even do that nowadays it’s all about monetization greed really.

Doesn't have to be just unlocking characters. Even cosmetic are largely monetized. Used to be when e.g you join a multiplayer and saw someone with a skin that he/she work their asses of, now its more to luck.

I can definitely see why people would be annoyed at the work it took to unlock him, but if you want a guy who makes ringouts looks like a career choice, use Lizardman. his sword uppercut > kick combo has nice range and is almost guaranteed to work, also he has a running tackle to get the opponent to the edge in the first place.

Not only was it a item to turn your other units to look like jogurt, you had to kill a enemy to get a 'jogurt ring', which was hard as hell, since jogurt could only deal 1 damage

Wes the Silent from Don't Starve. To unlock him you have to first find the place he's being held in on the ENORMOUS map from on the THIRD CHAPTER and kill all the clockworks guarding him. his hunger drains faster and his health is lower, his only saving grace is being able to create balloons that can explode for 5 damage (and damage HIMSELF!)

After unlocking Pichu in melee as a kid i tried everything to unlock Raichu. Because that made sense to me that the entire pikachu evolution line was in the game. I also searched all over the internet to find any clues how to do it

Oxbox, you got your 'Urbans' all mixed up. Urban Reign came out in 2005, not 1999. The game you might've been thinking of was "Urban Chaos", which indeed came out on the PS1 in 1999. Although to confuse things further, there was a second, completely unrelated Urban Chaos game that was released on the PS2 in 2006. Why do I know these things? Well... LOOK OVER THERE! What about The Lost in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth? Before the DLC you had to die four times in a row as specific characters in specific locations by specific enemies, and all you get is a character who dies in one hit!

That's not how you unlock Mokap in Deadly Alliance. You have to completely beat the games very hard Konquest Mode, which will unlock both Mokap and Blaze. C'mon guys!

Dr.B was one of the best and most unpredictable characters in the game if used effectively. He could imitate Heihachi via True Stance and had a variety of other characters movesets mixed into his own combo's. He's also the only character with a 20 hit combo in the game. People who said he wasn't worth the effort clearly don't know how to use him.

In Arc the Lad for PS2 there was a mountain you could fight monks on in battle rounds. If you got through all the rounds you unlocked a new follower to join your party. The thing is, you had to grind your characters super high in level just to beat the challenge. The follower you got was weaker than your whole party. Sort of a mood killer.
